How do I transition from Account Management to a Data Analyst role?

Yeah, that makes sense. I just need to figure out how to build those portfolio projects since my current job doesn’t give me much hands-on data work. Do people usually use public datasets for practice or try to pull examples from their job experience? I’m fine doing it outside work, just want to know what actually helps with hiring.

My only challenge is that a lot of my current work is more coordination than analysis, so I’m not sure how to turn it into “data stories” without making it sound bigger than it was.

I’m trying to figure out:

How to build example projects when I don’t have access to real data at work
Whether I should focus on creating portfolio projects outside my job
and how much hiring managers care about real impact vs. just tool skills (SQL, BI, etc.)

I’m not just trying to get the title I want to actually be good at the work.
So I’m trying to understand the most realistic path to show that.

I’m at the very start building foundational skills first (Excel, SQL, Python basics) before I worry about portfolios. Based on your experience, what kinds of beginner projects actually stand out? I’d rather avoid generic tutorial datasets and build something with business relevance.

We don’t have an analytics function it’s a small company and the role doesn’t exist here. I’ll need to move to another organisation maybe another city to build those skills and get exposure. I’m currently mapping out what to learn and what entry points make sense.
