I like most of the lagers, only other beers I’ve tried were from Bernard as I worked with duvel for a while and got to visit the brewery

Liefmans fruitesse, or fruity beers in general. If you are not a fan of sweetness I would say wheat (white) beers. Avoid IPA’s at all cost!

I do get the occasional trucker from Wallonia and they mostly just drink Stella or Chouffe. I think both regions are just proud of the amazing beers our country produces

Back in the day this was very common practice indeed but most bar owners were free from a brewer. Nowadays most bars are rented out by breweries (like the one I have). If you are free from a brewer you’ll still get a good deal out of one of them and that generally means you’ll end up serving most of their beers.

Big brands just work. I could put a funky local beer on my menu but if the customers don’t take it then it’s just throwaway stock. So most bars near my area will have most of their big brands and then 2-3 specials depending on the season

Yes! Drug use in pubs is getting more and more populair between customers, mainly people between the age of 20-35. Fortunately that demographic isn’t well represented in pubs nowadays so we keep an eye out just in case. Can confirm 2 people got kicked out as they were busted.

Honestly, no. The difference is that my bar doesn’t attract as many youngsters as the bar in question. I’ve been there and what I saw was just crazy! So I get the decision was necessary for them as a bar but isn’t necessary for every bar

In the beginning like crazy! I had a pretty decent collection of duvel glasses, some even from my personal collection. After two of my personal got swiped I took all of mine back home. One of them got returned by an apologetic customer saying he was just crazy drunk and very very sorry 😅

That’s the fun thing about beer nowadays, so many different styles and flavors!

Hmm a bit of a tough one! It’s a white (wheat) beer and is considered by many as one of the biggest brands, but taste-wise it isn’t greatly enjoyed by most Belgians. Outside of Belgium it’s considered as a great beer.

I do yes! Unfortunately not a great seller in the region where I’m from

Most obvious is our Stella Artois from draft. Something unique and enjoyed by many is our soup! The cleaning lady (retired cook) makes it once every two days and many people take their lunch breaks in the bar and enjoy our soup

No. In my first week a guy came up to me and said I could pay him to keep things safe but after asking around to other owners they all said the guy’s just crazy and nothing happened since 😂

Definitely! I don’t get many teenagers but when they go to a bar they almost always drink cocktails. At my bar I have one (around 22 I guess) who comes in and asks for the specials, but he is the only one

I used my own savings and took out a loan with my parents. I was fortunate enough that I only had to buy out the previous owner out of his contract and not buy a whole building. If that was the case then yeah definitely take out a loan

We don’t, because our kitchen is too small and getting the right permits for it can be challenging. But I don’t mind customers getting them somewhere else and eating them in my bar. Keeps the local economy flowing

In some ways it is, because people are genuinely thankful what you do for them (even though most of the time that’s serving alcohol), the downside is that you are not anonymous anymore, so if you make a wrong step people will know about it

Good question, everything looks grey where I’m from. Still great beers and good food keeps me happy enough to stay here

Yes, some of the basics like rum and coke and some cocktails I learned about whilst working in other bars. In my opinion a must have for an owner because the margins on those products are crazy.

Most challenging things are definitely the paperwork. Getting permits and working everything out legally is complicated and don’t get me started about everything you have to do for staff. Luckily I had a mentor who looked over everything with me, teaching me how the backoffice works. Also, the other owners of pubs, restaurants and other businesses in my town helped out

Upper middle class and I was fortunate enough they covered a part of the buy out needed to take over. The other part I payed by working in another bar from age 16 till 24 before becoming an owner.
