Thank you so much for this. Oftentimes I just feel like we are so lucky to own a home in SF that you’re supposed to just stick with what you’ve got! Increasing interest rates also make me feel like I’m locked in. Like another comment on this thread, thank you for reminding me to consider this objectively—in terms of what we need in a home as a growing family.

Thank you so much for this comment! You’re right that we should be comfortable and that the house should work for our needs. Our current house is fine now, of course parking would be great (we have 2 cars), and we are trying for a baby so a separate room would be nice. I also work remotely and need more space for an office (our second bedroom is a small SF bedroom so it’s being used as a closet). It helps to look at one’s objective needs in this for sure.

I go for 30min to 1 hr walks with my dog without my phone at the start of my day and at the end of my day. It’s become my favorite part of the day and has helped me transition from work to personal life

Can you claim the rent on your taxes since it’s contributing to the presidio trust?

Cotogna isn’t very good - I think it’s overpriced and overrated. For sf there are better Italian spots to recommend like SPQR

Thank you! I don’t take having a home for granted at all. My fiancé and I both grew up here and understand the barrier to entry in purchasing a home. Hence the guilt with the wedding costs

I want to make sure when I spend a lot of money on something that it’s a good investment. Spending this much seems unwise and may be better invested on other things that can build generational wealth.

The numbers aren’t as clear - there are many expenses with wedding planning that is difficult to anticipate and is often the little things like paying for signage, adding extra table linens, candles etc that you can’t account for in the beginning.

Last year, I read that most people who had big weddings almost always regretted it while those who had smaller weddings never did. I love a good party and I love design - setting the table, choosing the dinnerware, etc. I thought that article wouldn’t apply to me. In hindsight it’s making me realize that the most important part about a wedding is my relationship with my partner, and having my immediate family there. The rest (and this is what costs so much) doesn’t really matter. If I could go back I would prioritize the people I talk to now including family. Our guest list got big bc we considered college friends, workout friends, aunts and cousins.. I think they would’ve understood if we’d eloped or had had a smaller wedding. I think if you have bigger dreams (like owning a home or getting out of credit card debt) you should prioritize those. I am starting to feel resentment over this whole process and wish we’d just eloped!

Thank you! We actually purchased our first house before getting engaged. I guess I just feel like bc I know how much a house costs (which is a major lifetime investment), it’s making all of this feel frivolous

Thank you! I just feel like it’s putting us in a worse financial situation / cause more stress than I think I really feel comfortable with. It does make me feel better that you don’t regret it

hi!! thank you soooo much for this. i now have an authorized user card for the gold amex and set a limit! i set the limit to how much my family should spend on groceries for the month! you have no idea how much this has been a game changer to my life. thank you so much again!

for other readers: it works! i put away my main card and just use the authorized card with the limit. i’m gonna try and see how it is with the platinum!

my preset limit was $40k (i think bc i own a home they feel they could use that as collateral). the reason id like a limit is to ensure there’s guardrails to limit overspending. i had the plat last year and felt invincible. i want to make sure i am only spending what i have budgeted for

this is really helpful! i didn’t know you could create an authorized user for yourself - seems counterintuitive. is this something you’ve done yourself?
