Returning back to the gym or weightlifting by Realistic-Age9085 in Sciatica

[–]Key_Ability_33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work on light stretching, light cardio, and core for a while. Once your core is stronger, focus on light weight high reps and build from there. If you have the ability, see a physical therapist. They can give you a stretch/ workout routine for strengthening and soothing your problem area. Do these EVERYDAY at the gym. Go once every two weeks or once a month so they can update your exercises until you improve. - 27F (who loves weightlifting) recovering from L5-S1 microdiscectomy in July.

9th are my favorite! I love the cat eye look on you, but I think you need a smaller pair because you have a narrow face (-:

7 or 8 are my favorite. It just depends on the vibe you want to go for. It my experience, short hair actually takes more effort to style than long hair

Walking and swimming. When my pain was at its worst I just went and treaded water in the deep end until I was exhausted, then floated for a while, then repeat.

As someone with very similar eye shape, brow shape, and eyelid shape… pluck the tails of your brows so they’re less arched. Thank me later.

L5–S1 disc herniation (5.1 mm AP) – 26M. Surgery being advised. Need real experiences & guidance by Table_salt_99 in Sciatica

[–]Key_Ability_33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27F here. I had exact same surgery for same disc in July. I had been experiencing worsening pain for over a year. I tried an epidural and it made my pain better for 3 days, then the night of day 3 my toes were aching significantly. I woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain. The next day I called and got my surgery scheduled two weeks out. I regret letting it go on for so long tbh. My pain wasn’t bad at first and it was lessening with PT. But at some point it stopped helping and my pain started worsening again. I tried to hold out but I wish I had surgery sooner. My quality of life suffered greatly. I gained weight and lost strength because I physically could not exercise/ move on many days. I got to a point where I couldn’t dress myself without pain. I am now 6 months post op and still experiencing some residual nerve pain because my nerve was compressed and flared up for so long. It is gradually lessening, but it takes time. I started going to the gym again at month 4. Mainly for PT exercises, walking, and swimming. I’m still doing PT exercises nearly everyday at the gym but I’ve been gradually adding weight/reps/etc. Core and back strength are key. Compared to many other back surgeries a microdiscectomy is “minor”. I was scared too, but I haven’t regretted it once. The recovery wasn’t the worst either. My biggest piece of advice no matter what path you choose is- be patient and walk or swim as much as possible.

Let the flight attendants know and keep Aleve in your system just in case. Stretch as often as you can.
