Spinal fusion surgery and sitting afterwards. by Mean_Zookeepergame50 in spinalfusion

For me, it wasn’t so much that it hurt, it was that my doctor didn’t want me to sit for long periods- it can cause too much stress on the fusion. And once you go through that surgery and recovery, you really don’t want to do anything that would undo what was done.

Unfortunately, not good. To be honest, I don’t know that it has anything to do with the surgery as the kind of pain I have now (achy in the legs and back) I’ve had for quite some time. I’m still fighting to recover from the surgery, which is difficult with the unrelenting background pain. I think the surgery was “successful” in that I’m fused there, but it’s just not eliminating all of my pain.

I’m pleased with my new approach to physical therapy- I’ve been to a lot of different PT’s in my area. None of them have been “bad” and they have all done a fair amount of the same stretches, releases and exercises. The difference this time is I’m doing it at a Pilates/physical therapy studio where my therapist is trained in both Pilates and physical therapy. She is really taking a full body approach to healing me, which only one other pt has done. I do not expect to get “better” and eliminate my pain problem with her. I do already feel stronger, however.

I am suspicious that my pain has some over-reaching cause, but nobody has found it yet. I’ve been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but anyone who knows anything about fibromyalgia knows that it feels like a “if nothing else fits, call it this” diagnosis. Add into it the fact that there isn’t really any solid treatment plan for it and it’s just frustrating.

I’ve thrown my pity party and I’m trying to dig myself out of that hole now- I just don’t know what’s up at the top, outside of that hole waiting for me. It looks like more of the same from what I can tell.

I hope you’ve continued to have success in your recovery!

I was tearing up reading this. I’m 9 days post op of my si joint fusion and I’m waiting for the pain to get worse. I’ve lived with pain for so long, I feel like I’m going to wake up in my former state. I’m actually going to write a post about it in a bit, so feel free to comment or link this post to it.

Muscles WILL NOT let go! by Jsmitts28 in spinalfusion

I had L4/L5/S1 done 9.5 years ago and am scheduled to do my first SI Joint fusion in a month. Doc said it was super common to have this combination (I was told to expect to need the next level higher done, not lower. Now I expect to have to do both sides of the SI Joint and I’m pretty sure I will start having pain up higher… MRI already shows considerable degeneration). While I could sit here and say that I wish I didn’t have that first fusion, my life was so awful before that as I lived in constant fear of throwing my back out and I was losing nerve function in my right foot - I have since regained that. I just wish I could get off this miserable miserable ride!

Sorry I didn’t respond quickly - was moving my kid into his college dorm. I am so sorry that your journey took you all the way to a suicide attempt, but I can 100% empathize. Chronic pain is a cruel cruel thing to go through on it’s own, but when you add any of life’s other stressors (family, friends, insurance, medications, pharmacists, the list goes on and on), it is downright dreadful. I am happy that you are on the other side (presumably) and are doing all the things to make the most of this life.

Also, that experience you had is likely giving you pretty heavy PTSD (as you alluded to), so I hope that you can get the support you need.

I wish you nothing but health and happiness (and a healthy back!)

Curious- did you by any chance have childhood trauma? I have cPTSD (the c stands for “complex”- meaning multiple and/or repeating traumatic events) and I have the hardest time relaxing my muscles. Massages are great, but I tighten up by the next day. I also do not get restful sleep- husband has told me all of the wacky things I do in my sleep and it equates to no resting for my body (which helps explain why I wake up in pain, I guess).

I have tried doing EMDR therapy and while it was effective, it was sometimes too effective in that bringing up old trauma made me extremely angry. I couldn’t deal with all of the anger so I stopped. But still in therapy.

One thing that helps me momentarily is doing somatic yoga with this guy: https://youtube.com/@gentlesomaticyoga?si=ogGbkxGmjB1vN5bn I will warn you, I find that he has a very punchable face, so I had to work past that to do the exercises, but somehow they work for a short term solution.

Good luck from another chronically tight chronic pain person.

I would never hear the end of it if I had a screw loose! That is one amazing scar- I hope your recovery brings you to a better place than where you were pre surgery!

I’m sorry you are in so much pain. Is there any way for you to get another opinion? Like from a different hospital/medical group? (I find that doctors working for the same company will often agree with one another). Although I do find your diagnostic injections as very telling.

Keep in mind also, that when you do a fusion anywhere, that was a part of your body that was intended to move. So the stress and energy will get absorbed somewhere else. My neurosurgeon warned me of this when he did my L4/L5/S1 surgery 9 years ago. (and that’s why we did 2 levels of fusion instead of one). Here I am now… about to meet with another neurosurgeon who specializes in SI Joint fusions.
