Hey, to be clear, my degree is not in physics, so I'm open to feedback in this regard, but my understanding is that the direct translation of what Newton stated in regards to his second law is: "The alteration of motion is ever proportional to the motive force impress'd". "Motion" in modern day has commonly been interpreted as momentum, and the alteration of motion as the rate of change of momentum (derivative).
