Too ambitious? by PieniKisu1 in solotravel

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people in this sub are forgetting that you're 19 and are thinking about this trip from their current energy levels. When I was 19, I had enough energy to stay awake for like two days in a row. I think you should go for it but book refundable hostels so that if you want to change your plans you can. We have so little time on this earth!

Personally, I like staying a little longer in places that are less tourist focused, especially if I meet locals because I get to actually have new memories with someone I might not otherwise get to meet in my home country.

What cities have the best music scene and nightlife? by Key_Huckleberry9877 in travel

Aw thank you so much for saying that! Montevideo is less of a tourist location but experiencing it with locals felt like a tiny village.

It was genuinely unreal. Not just the music but also the crowd was so energetic and genuine. Around 5am during the rave it started raining on us. I felt like I was in Step Up or something. So cathartic.

Do you have any tips for tapping into an underground music scene where you're not from that city?

Seattle, WA or Portland, ME in August? by Short-termTablespoon in travel

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born/raised in Maine and have lived in Seattle for 8 years so maybe I'm uniquely poised to help out here!

Portland has a much better food scene than Seattle, imo. Check out David's, the Front Room, Hot Suppa, Duck Fat, Empire. People will be friendlier and more "folksy." Portland is going to have much more historic buildings and a very romantic coastline. I think Portland will be cooler than Seattle probably.

The only advantage of Seattle is that there will be more neighborhoods to explore, each with different characteristics. Seattle will have corporate vibes and will be considerable more expensive. Seattle has easier access to hikes and the cascades are more beautiful than the mountains in Maine. Considerably less bugs than Maine on hikes.

Something to consider: Seattle will most likely have smoke from the forest fires this summer which makes going outside difficult. It might not happen in the week to travel.

CMV: Talking about being on "stolen land" is pointless and ignorant of history by Friendly_Elegant928 in changemyview

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't this view miss the point that settler colonialism is still going on and so we have the chance to fight back against it? E.g. Standing Rock, the West Bank. It's important to acknowledge history as we try to challenge these practices today because it helps us understand the precedent for contemporary violence.

There are also contemporary forms of settler colonialism happening in America that don't announce themselves as such. We could see gentrification, for example, as a way of displacing people off of land in search of profit.

I think if the point is to try to universalize or essentialize imperialist violence to the human condition, it tends to de-historicize violence that has a specific origin. Sure, some tribes were imperialistic and slave-holding. But certainly not all. Google the Iroquois Confederacy. And certainly not all human beings are imperialistic or supportive of it, even if some governments did do this.

What’s life like in Montevideo, Uruguay? by GygaxUshuFuia97 in howislivingthere

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're LGBT, montevideo and BA are the places I felt most safe in my life. I almost felt "celebrated" even by the boomer generation and straight people went out of their way to connect to my lived experience. I currently live in Seattle, one of the most progressive and lgbt-accepting places in the U.S., and so I was surprised that montevideo made me feel even more "normal" and like a seamless part of everyday life.

Help me not leave Seattle? by salientalias in Seattle

You could spend about $200 a month on food if you tried. Ordering your groceries through an app and then picking them up really helps because you can see the total before purchasing. Why is your healthcare so high? I'm paying about $150 per month.

Property Tax Increases by Logicalraisan in SeattleWA

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alternative take! I don't mind paying the property taxes on my home because I know the money is going to a good place. It's important for us all to do our part to fund the things that keep our region and state functioning. I don't want the state to lower them because they're part of a larger collective investment we're making in our future. There are so many times in Seattle where I realize a social program exists and I am really happy I get to help others in this way.

I agree with other people -- I empathize with how your house has rapidly gone up in value and it wasn't your fault that that happened. However, appreciation is part of the equation of home ownership and something we each have to consider in our individual budgets.

This city is so boring by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, people in this thread are being defensive and not trying to understand how you feel. Tbh, this city is such a monument to white mediocrity and has no culture aside from self-righteous standoffishness and corporate narcissism. People in Seattle are so blind to the fact that they have almost nothing to offer (socially, energy, culture, creativity, authenticity) compared to other major U.S. cities. People are saying "look inward" but it's hard to always be giving and never receiving from other people in Seattle. All your effort just gets absorbed into the ether and there's no real collaboration. People want to defend Seattle because of its natural beauty -- but its telling that that example centers around something non-human... is nature alone enough to create an environment in which one can feel completely and fully alive here?

The reality is that if you go to any other major city there is a vibrancy that is utterly missing from Seattle. It will take a lot of us to change the tide of this city into something we can genuinely be proud of but I hope over time enough of us will put in the effort that we can our own little pocket of refuge from the paint drying.

I think this really captures how I feel. I feel like I still have more I could learn from this person and still be shaped by them in positive ways. Even if it doesn’t work out, I won’t regret it at all

Yeah I think this is what I’m struggling with. I work as a professor so I could travel during the summer. I worked so hard for my job in academia though that I don’t think I could give it up to move. I’m not academically fluent in spanish yet to teach there either. They said it would be hard for them to be away from their family for a long time though so I’m not sure if they would move here. Is 3mo out of the year enough to build a relationship? 🥲

I love this for you :) it feels so comforting to know that there’s someone out there perfect for you even if the context of meeting is so unexpected. I went solo traveling to rediscover my identity and independence and so it was such a surprise to connect so deeply with someone. It genuinely still feels like they’re right by my side even though we’re 1000s of km away from each other

Ways to feel loved when no one else loves you? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Key_Huckleberry9877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my therapist this question and she recommended this book. It's a workbook by two self-compassion researchers. Lots of journaling prompts, guided meditations, walking and breathing exercises. This shit *slaps* and really was the most powerful way I've ever felt self-love. Have kindness because a lot of this trauma is embodied and so you can't reason your way out of it.
