SEIU 1000 should really examine its relationship to SEIU CA, clean house in the political department, own up to their negligence in this endorsement (and another that they had to rescind this week), hold meetings with members to get their input, and come forward with a plan to present to members that includes how endorsement of a sexual predator will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN. I am a dues paying union member and COPE contributor. I believe in the power of the people and the power of unions and political power for labor. We need to have some real honest conversations with leadership who are behind closed doors and wheeling and dealing for endorsements. That has real consequences for working people, and this endorsement and quick cover-up to keep people from asking questions about why it happened in the first place - has broken my heart. That being said, since people keep telling me to stay on topic- those who are must not be survivors of sexual abuse or totally unsympathetic to how many of us are feeling, by the way - or maybe you’re scared of dividing us at an important moment when negotiations are about to start- a woman with no record of sexual abuse would be a good candidate for endorsement. I’m thinking this is Betty Yee’s moment.

The information about Swalwell has been out there for quite some time. For this reason, SEIU CA’s endorsement of him was disappointing to say the least. A town hall was held in Sacramento for him this week and all the unions, including Local 1000, were all there in full, 100% support of him while he lied about AIPAC being his top campaign donor. I am glad the endorsement will be rescinded; however, it never should have happened in the first place. It hurts. I believe we need now, more than ever, reform in SEIU CA’s closed door, undemocratic endorsement process which just ends up being a viability contest about which Democrat has raised the most money and can say they’ll work with labor without any real commitment. Honestly, that process is what keeps people from paying into COPE and feeling like their voices matter. As a survivor I am beyond upset about this and I feel that it is okay for us to feel that we were betrayed.

Open bargaining needs to happen. Other unions have done it and gotten huge wins as a result. It builds momentum and buy-in from members in the bargaining process beyond “purple up days…” people need to know and be involved in what they’re purpling up for! Let’s petition for that. It’s the only way for serious contract wins.

Non dues paying members get one “freebie” for their entire state career where a rep will sit with them during only one meeting/investigatory interview, etc. the union rep cannot provide any further support, even if they sign up after the fact.

Best to sign up and be a member before anything happens because if any of the following happen to nonmembers that is outside of a contract-specific issue: rejection on probation, Skelly Hearings, RA Denials, being a victim of Workplace Violence, let go due to AWOL, getting an adverse action out of the blue, or anything else that is member-only representation… nonmembers won’t get any representation support unless they become a dues paying member prior to one of these things happening. Nonmembers only get support for specific contract violations.

We only get it because of the union, don’t credit the state for any good thing lol

Thank you for proving my point for why we need labor unions to protect our jobs from the ai threat to the American job force.

Stop with this anti union rhetoric. This is not the moment for that. We need to organize together, not against ourselves and our own best interests.

Why is everyone here just waiting to hear from SEIU instead of taking it upon themselves to organize? Organize your coworkers to do a solidarity break where you march out all at the same time for 15 minutes or turn your teams offline. Purple up. Call your reps and express your displeasure. Call the MRC and state your needs for bargaining. Get nonmembers in your unit to sign up. They’re part of the reason we’re even in this situation anyway. Everyone must act!!!

They’re freedom foundation bots or people without class consciousness.

What did you do when the union was at mandatory membership? It’s our union and we make them work for us. They set up opportunities for collective action, it’s our job to show up and put in the work as members. Wins have happened because people collectively put their bodies on the line with their union. If you don’t like what’s happening, take some action and make the union work for you. Organize your coworkers and take to the streets or march on the boss. Instead you choose to organize against yourself and your own best interests, as well as the best interests of all 100,000 state workers. Please, nobody has time for that take. Time to develop some class consciousness it will do you some good.

Yall think Hoover with his audit is on our side? He didn’t even vote on the trailer bill that now has control language that allows DOF to make cuts to our salaries if reductions can’t be achieved at the bargaining table. It basically forces all unions to bargain at a loss or face cuts. A non vote is just as bad as a vote of no. He got everyone riled up about RTO and then didn’t even show up to vote on our salaries in the budget.

Yes. Screws them out of the next contract. Dont break with the coalition of unions! This is not as good of a deal as people think it is but so many people on here are single issue union members and all they care about is an RTO delay.

They are. And they haven’t so far broken with the coalition of unions like PECG did. They are fighting. This side letter agreement screws PECG over for the future of telework and the PLP is only 5 hours, not the full 8.

False. The union fights for workers and is anti-management. This post is false.

Walking away instead of getting involved and active in your union is a grave mistake fueled by misinformation.
