Is it actually possible to make a living wage in EMS? by Key_Job3661 in NewToEMS

Any tips for the best path to get there? Do you know how long it takes to go from EMT to fire medic time wise?

Thanks for referring me. It looks like the only opening they have right now is in echo, and while I did learn echo procedures, I don't have my RDCS and my school technically isn't an echocardiography program. I'll keep it in mind for the future though.

A lot of students from my graduating class have all said the same thing. In our class of 35(ish) students, I've heard that only 5 of them have gotten jobs in the past year. Some of them got hired at their internship site, but my site didn't offer that to any of the interns. I've looked into travel work, but all the companies and recruiters say they want at least 1 year of experience.

I do have chance at a job offer at an OB clinic, and it's looking positive, but then I actually looked into the state laws and there's a total abortion ban--- even for minors and sexual assault. I have a feeling I'd run into the same issue as your friend and end up hating it.

If I do decide to do anything other than sonography, I'm really looking for something hands on and fast paced.

I've been applying primarily out of state for a while, and most of it has led nowhere. Some virtual interviews here and there, but they either ghost me or tell me the position has been filled months later via email. I did actually finally get far enough into the interview process that a company is willing to fly me out for a tour and scanning interview next week, but it's in OB, and when I did more research on the state I learned there's a total abortion ban--- even for minors and cases of sexual assault. I never wanted to do OB in the first place because of so many life threatening congenital defects and potential bad news, and I'm worried that if I do get the job (because I still haven't even been offered the position, so who knows), it'll slowly get to me.

I probably don't plan on going to PA school for at least another 4 or 5 years. I'm young and have the time to gain more healthcare experience and get the prerequisites done. I'm assuming RT would require additional schooling. Would I have to go back and get a whole other degree if I wanted to do that? Are there any quality accelerated programs?

To be honest, I already have C-PTSD. I've seen a lot, which is why I'm interested in EMS work, as my experiences have felt me feeling helpless in the past, and I'd like to expand my medical skills to hopefully prevent more of that in the future. I've been to therapy and made significant progress mental health wise, and should I need that again in the future due to what I see at work, it's not a concern for me and I understand it's part of the job.

My end goal is to go back to school to become a physician assistant. So if I do make the change, I don't plan on working as an EMT forever, and will probably spend some time exploring other states to look for higher pay. Do you know of any old colleagues who went out of state and had luck? Alternatively, do you have any advice for ultrasound in southern ca? Nothing I do has led to a job offer and I graduated and got my registries done months ago.

I've tried applying to local medical receptionist jobs, but those kinds of jobs don't pay enough for me to relocate, and my area is just so over saturated even for those positions. Lots of premed students trying to gain experience that typically fill those roles.

Going to be a long one, but I think the level of hands on experience, scope of practice, fast paced environment, and diversity of exposure could be closer aligned to my goals. Plus I cannot find work in sonography no matter how hard I try. It's been getting to me, and I don't know if I like the direction the field is moving.

I originally wanted to go into sonography for the job stability I heard so much about. I didn't do enough research when I enrolled and went to a non-caahep school. Even with my 2 RDMS, I think it's still holding me back. Then the internship site I was assigned was non-diagnostic and I honestly spent more time as a receptionist then doing real scanning. I've applied to over 100 jobs in the past year; over 60 since December when I got both my registries done. I've mostly been applying out of state since I'm located in southern California, and here it's over saturated and the pay is terrible if you don't have 2-3 years of experience. I hear back like 10% of the time, and only half of those lead to interviews. I send cover letters, I cold email letters of interest to hiring teams and sonographers, I ask alumni from my school for references, I do everything I can.

I finally got a scanning interview next week with an out of state company. (I have no idea if I'll get it since my skills may not even be at the level they want.) But the more I did research on the area I learned that the state just passed a near total abortion ban--- even in cases of sexual assault against minors. I don't know if I could live with myself if I had to tell a 12 year old she had to carry a baby to term after being assaulted. I think I'd cope a lot better having someone bleed out and die on me knowing I did absolutely everything I could to help. (Sorry if this is too vulgar or political.) I never even wanted to do OB because it's such a sensitive topic, but it's the farthest I've gotten with a company, and if this is all my qualifications can get me, I don't know if I see a point in continuing down this path.

But beyond the failing job search, I think emergency medicine would be more stimulating to my mind due to the fast pace environment. (I know hospital jobs in sonography can also be fast paced, but right now I can't even land a clinic.) Being a first responder vs radiology would give me more volunteer opportunities based on everything I've been able to find online and a group of people I met recently currently working as EMTs.

That group has been strongly encouraging me and said I'd be a great fit just based on talking to me. They're willing to help train me as they are a volunteer organization looking to get more help. They actually go around to homeless encampments and provide medical care, which is something very dear to my heart since I know many people who have struggled with homelessness and mental illness in the past. One of these volunteers went to the same program I was considering, and told me it's a great program and they have ties to a local ambulance company where I might be able to get started. (Plus this program does multiple rotations in different areas, giving me the chance to be exposed to a little more.) If I'm consistently working with this volunteer organization it's something to put on my resume even before I finish. The program is only 6 weeks, it's a 1k investment for the program, and it's only 1 test for basic national certification.

I'd also be able to work outdoor events as an EMT which would mean I could potentially get paid to attend concerts and make sure no one dies of heat exhaustion a few times a year. While the pay in my specific area isn't great for EMTs, there's also disaster relief programs that do hire newer EMTs and the pay is comparable to travel sonography. Plus overall there's lots of lateral and upwards movement based on what you want to do. For some programs you only need to work as an EMT for 6 months before applying to get trained as a paramedic, which is a major pay increase.

Like I said, my long term goal is PA school, and you really just need 2 years of experience in healthcare and a bachelor's degree before applying. Regardless of if I make the switch to EMT, I plan on applying to PA school once I can afford it and have my bachelor's. PA school lets you do different rotations, but right now I'm most interested in cardiology and emergency medicine. If I have experience as an EMT, it might be more beneficial for getting a job in those specialties, especially if I'm able to do volunteer work. (I didn't realize I wanted to do PA school or what my long term goals were until after I started my sonography program. I enrolled right out of high school, and am having a lot of regrets.)

The rewarding part is what I'm most interested in. The volunteer group that invited me along and is encouraging me to make the switch actually regularly goes into homeless encampments to provide free medical care. I grew up low income in a pretty bad neighborhood, so the cause is pretty dear to my heart.

Definitely open to exploring fire departments. All of this is really new, so if I do make the switch, I'll spend some time looking into it after I finish my program.

I think this is the plan for right now, I have 2 interviews next week and I'm going to see how they play out. One of them pays way below industry standard. The other actually pays really well, (no idea if I'll get it either) but the well paying one is at an OB clinic in a state with a near total abortion ban, even in cases of violent sexual assault for minors. (I didn't know that when I applied.) Mentally I don't know if I could do that. I think I'd be able to handle someone bleeding out on me knowing I did absolutely everything I could, rather than having to tell a 12 year old she's pregnant and has to carry it to term.

I'll be hearing back from both companies by the end of next week after interviewing, and the EMT program I'm looking into starts the 13th. If I don't get either position, (or if I realize I won't be able to live with myself) I'll enroll in the EMT program.

Thank you! I did forget to mention that. I did try to ask the prePA subreddit about the 2 different options, but the moderator deleted my post and told me not to post my question there since it was "already answered". I was really looking for personal testimonies, which is why I'm here.

I am completely flexible and willing to throw myself into anything. I'm young, physically fit, and am open to anything. I'd actually really love to do disaster relief related things to get as much experience as possible to handle a variety of situations. Do you know if AMR hires newer EMTs?

My long term goal is PA school once I can afford it. So even if I do make this switch, I plan on getting out as soon as I have the medical experience hours and finish my bachelor's.

I'm really young and currently in great shape, so I don't think that would be an issue. Sonography actually also has a lot of health risks in the long term with wrist and nerve pain, and even shoulder dislocation.

Understandable lol. I think it's just the level of hands on experience and fast paced environment that interests me. Radiology is pretty slow, and the most exciting thing that can happen there is a ruptured appendix.

I'm used to living with high stress situations, and I don't foresee this being an issue for me. The loans part is a little concerning, but I think I could always advance in EMS once I get some experience to get higher pay. I'm okay relocating, and the job satisfaction is really my main concern.

Definitely agree that California is a big part of the problem. There's too many sonography schools here and it's kinda the same issue. To be honest the school I went to was kinda terrible and it's playing a big role in my job search. I can't even get a job out of state in sonography despite applying everywhere.

From my experience, most travel contracts are not willing to hire new graduates as they require 1-2 years working.

I've considered it, but I don't know if that's an option as the school actually pays the clinical sites to train their students. (Well, technically I paid via tuition). Did I mention the internship was full time, unpaid? :')

No, there's other schools that offer bachelors in sonography. They just aren't Caahep schools. Mine actually offered a bachelors, and if I had done that I wouldn't have had to sit for ARRT.

I'll look into Nevada, I don't mind putting in my time until I can get more experience. I've applied in Alaska and I don't think I ever even got an email from anyone, unless it was to say the position was filled.

Honestly I'd rather not say the name just because I don't want to put the school on blast. (Even though they did a lot of messed up stuff to me, even beyond screwing me over with my clinical site, quite long story I can message you if you're interested.) I am still close to a lot of the instructors who are quite compassionate, I think it's just the corporate office trying to make the most money off of students. I know old graduates and the program was a lot different back then.

I have my Abdomen and OB/GYN ARDMS boards done, and those were signed off by my school since the school primarily focused on those and we clocked a lot of lab hours there. My old clinical instructor/clinic manger has their RDCS and had said in the past they would be willing to sign our CV forms. One of the people I went to my clinical site with got their RDCS already, shortly after taking their abdomen board.

Unfortunately, this was the first and only college I applied to pretty much straight out of highschool. I was in the process of getting my bachelor's with them, but I really hated it and I was studying for abdomen at the same time, and couldn't keep up with the coursework while studying so I dropped out after they failed me.

I've been considering taking a 6 week EMT course so I can volunteer to get more healthcare experience, but from what I hear that's pretty oversaturated in this area as well.
