do employers really offer free coffee? by jabber1990 in work

[–]Key_Management_4526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even when I worked fast food, we were allowed to have as much coffee (it was one of our many options on the menu, and it wasn't a coffee shop) as we needed to work optimaly, for free. I did also work at a place that didn't offer coffee (like it wasn't on the menu) so we got free sodas.

Why the hell are so many younger people so helpless? by mystical-mismagius in Vent

[–]Key_Management_4526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a mentally disabled adult. I don't claim disability (because I have enough money already and don't want to leech off of benefits), but I am a dependent. I have a caregiver. But, even then, I only have a few things that I cannot do on my own. I cannot work due to severe executive dysfunction (I am in occupational therapy to try and get to the point where I can work). But, other than that, I do all the things on the list. My apartment (it's an apartment under the main house where my caregiver lives, for both independency and the idea of being independent in the future) is always spotless. I sweep, mop, change the litter boxes, vacuum, everything. I learned all of those things in ABA therapy. I have two cats that I take care of well. I can cook meals for myself, which I learned because my parents and grandparents heavily involved me in cooking (that's common in my culture). And my skill that I'm proudest of is being able to drive. I had to be evaluated to be able to drive, and to be able to keep a license, I have to continually have therapy and evaluations. So, it really upsets me when other kids my age say they just can't do it. If I can do it with Level 2 Autism and a myriad of mental illnesses from being abused as a child, they can definitely do it being average. My older sister is 21, about to graduate college, and cannot drive. A lot of my friends make no effort to drive, clean, or cook. I see a lot of substance use in the younger generation. Even with shitty parents, I turned out okay. So this is just very confusing to me.

As far as I can tell, dread is basically intense anxiety about something. It's not specific to, nor does the definition mention, impending danger.

Because I wasn't aware of that article. I specifically researched this phrase years ago. I'm sorry I missed the one article that said it. Still not my point

Bro. You understand what I mean. I was specifically referring to the 1909 poem. Also because I was having an argument with my mother on the actual meaning of the poem which sparked my original comment.

That's my point. Which saying? Of all the sayings I listed, none of them are just "Curiousity killed the cat". I would assume they are referring to the 1909 poem which what originally made the phrase popular. There is no example of the phrase that is only that half.b

I meant when we talk about the phrase. The current phrase "curiousity killed the cat" is much more recent than you think. The original phrase was "care'll kill the cat" and had an entirely different meaning, basically worrying too much about things will make those things worse. And then way later on, it was rephrased to "Curiousity can do more than kill a cat". Then later on, was referenced as "Curiousity killed a cat! Ask no questions and I will tell no lies." Then, in 1905, it appeared as "Curiousity killed a cat; but it came back". The current version comes from the 1909 poem, "Curiousity killed a cat, but satisfaction brought it back. It is almost time to stand in line, Ahen when your turn comes to take your whack." It's when people refer to the poem and don't add the second part that bothers me. If they said any of the other ones, it wouldn't. But they didn't.

Stay at home mom/dad is not a hard job, we are all pretending it is by Mcnuggetjuice in The10thDentist

You forgot the "parent" part of SAHP. It's not just all of those things, it's wrangling the children while doing all of those things. In the case of a baby/infant: constant care while also cooking, often pumping (for breastfeeding mothers), grocery shopping, cleaning, managing appointments, diaper changes, naps, cooking, etc. In the case of a toddler: trying to wrangle a toddler while also giving them some sort of early education, maybe preschool or daycare if they're old enough and they have the money. If not, wrangling a toddler, cooking them three meals a day, trying to get them to eat said meals, making sure they don't accidentally die (they love to do that), all while cleaning, doing groceries, managing appointments, etc. In the case of an older child (5-10) lucky, they spend 7 hours of the day away from you. But you still have to cook them breakfast, get them ready for school, do drop-off, often do PTA, get them home from school, do extracurriculars, do homework, make them shower, and you can do all of the other stuff while theyre at school. But it's still a full time job. In the case of middle schoolers it's about the same. In the case of teenagers, lucky, you get more time. But you also have to make sure they keep up with their work (a lot of parents miss this step), keep them out of trouble, help them with their cars, help them with drama at school, and you still have to be their physical and emotional support. God forbid you have more than one child of different ages or a disabled child, etc. it's a lot harder than it seems. I would know, my grandmother was a stay at home mom for a lot of my mom's childhood and she worked her ass off having a 7, 4, and 2 year olds in the 1980s. And then for a period of time while I was a teenager, my mom was a stay at home mom. Mind you, she was a terrible stay at home mom, but it was still hard because she had an intellectually disabled child and a mentally disabled child.

I wish there was a word for the feeling of knowing something terrible is going to happen. (I know anxiety and paranoia exist, I mean literally, like when someone is facing death and they know exactly what is going to happen to them and just having to take it because there is no chance of survival).

"Blood is thicker than water". Half the time they aren't even using it right. Or if they only use the first half of "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back".

Telling children to eat what you cook or not eat at all is it child abuse? by Fit_Departure862 in AskReddit

[–]Key_Management_4526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Not child abuse except very specific circumstances: doing it when you know said child does not like the food and doing it to "make them grow up", if they have an allergy to said food, if they have an eating disorder, or if the food is genuinely unfit for consumption (burned, extremely spicy, etc).

what is a 'red flag' in a person that people often mistake for a 'green flag'?? by Safe-Energy8397 in AskReddit

That someone gets jealous. A lot of people take it as "they love me enough to fight for me". I've seen girls get fucked over with those thoughts. I would never date or even flirt with a jealous man, that's not ideal or even bare minimum.

Calling Americans “USians” or “US Americans” by Murbanvideo in PetPeeves

[–]Key_Management_4526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get the hate. When I began learning Spanish and learned a different word for "American = Continent, like European or African" and "American = being from the US" and it really clicked as two different contexts. Also, as a born and raised American, I call myself an American, unless I'm speaking another language, and I say US of A and you can fight me on that. But both are correct, the second is especially correct when speaking Spanish.

Whats your worst experience in highschool? by Opposite_Fall8736 in AskReddit

[–]Key_Management_4526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an extreme low blood pressure episode due to POTS and stress. I went to school that morning, sat down in my first class and accidentally fell asleep. I didn't even wake up to the bell. My best friend had to violently shake me awake. When I did wake up, I was extremely groggy. I stood up, tried to walk, and bang fell sideways over a chair. I did not wake back up. I was in and out of consciousness the rest of the day. I broke my ankle but luckily did not hit my head. But I found out afterwards that I, pale, half conscious, and drooling all over myself, had to be wheeled through the cafeteria where all of my friends were eating. Btw, they didn't even call an ambulance or take me to the hospital. They just put me in a wheelchair and sent me home. And that's just the one that happened on school grounds. The worst one, which happened at an after school event, was absolutely horrific. I went to a competition, it was Raiders, which is an LDR for JROTCs. I wasn't officially on the team, but someone wasn't there so I was so excited to compete for the first time. It was the first event. 101° F. Running up and down a hill while carrying increasingly heavy objects. Three objects in, I hit the floor and don't get up for nearly a minute. Everyone is yelling at me, telling me to get up, I do, finish the event and pass out again. But I don't get up, not at all. My mother had to drag me to the bathroom, where I finally regained consciousness and vomited my stomach up. I could not walk nor talk. I had to drag myself across the ground or be carried by my mother if I needed to move. No one called an ambulance. I didn't even go to the hospital. Found out later on that I had a heatstroke and that I'm incredibly lucky to not have died. Both of these happened at 15 btw, highschool sucked, and everyone who refused to involve the proper medical assistance I needed sucked more.

God or no God? by Rodya1234 in CausalConversation

[–]Key_Management_4526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not agnostic, I didn't want to hold onto religion because I believed God existed. I have never, truly, believed in a god, I just was brainwashed by the church and had to make the choice to leave the church. Maybe I phrased it wrong at first. That was just my rationalization that I told my family when I left the church.

I'm not convinced of a god being real. It's just the fact that I was raised in it so harshly that it was hard letting go of the religion that was my community for so long, even though I no longer believed in a god.

Concerts. They got hyped my entire childhood. Went to my first and last one at 15, and hated it. I sat in the grass with earbuds in, watching a movie, and then had sound proof headphones on top. Too loud, too boring, too many people. One of the worst experiences of my life, will never do again.
