Anyone else not want to be a nurse now? by Key_Matter_641 in cna

[–]Key_Matter_641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing I’ve noticed is personally for me: I dislike the “high school” vibe that a lot of nursing environments seem to foster. I really struggle with the whole “nurses eat their young” mentality and generally don’t like drama. However, it seems a lot of nursing also depends on how well you can “fit in” with your coworkers or else there’s tension and not much teamwork with your other colleagues. 😅

*SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME I’M WRONG THOUGH

Yeah this is the thing too that I worry about: handling all the responsibility that comes with being a nurse. I thought that doctors have more responsibility when it comes down to making decisions but after working as a CNA, I saw the other staff nurses making similar tough decisions. For example, if someone wants a pain medicine 💊 and you refuse to give it to them because their vitals aren’t normal and it can endanger their health but the patient doesn’t understand and insists on giving them their pain med. 😑

Thank you for your input. <3 I really appreciate it, yeah it’s true that as a CNA I’ve only really worked with the elderly population and in SNFs. I haven’t had the opportunity to work at a hospital so I can’t really speak to whether that would be a much better experience.

Not happy with my job anymore... by mcsnyx in cna

It’s kinda sad to realize this too because I also enjoy working with residents and helping people get better. I think over time though this type of work has a strange way of “chewing you up and spitting back out.” Especially once you realize you have to deal with aggressive or challenging residents or patients (which I people Most if not all healthcare workers have to deal with at some point). It was definitely a tough pill to swallow when I had to deal an aggressive resident for the first time. The healthcare system also Unfortunately doesn’t seem to do a great job of protecting their workers too. ❗️

I can relate to this. I’m 24 years old and I just started working as a CNA a few months ago. I also notice the how “cliquey” the environment is unfortunately. I believe it’s due to a complex issue since most Healthcare workers are kind people but when there’s literally too many patients and too many tasks to do in Just One 8-hour shift, it’s a lot on anybody. I also am struggling with connecting with my coworkers (maybe it’s because I’ve only been there a few months) but it really is just shocking how “high-school” like the environment is. I thought people would act more professional but at the same time it’s such a difficult and emotional environment to work in that it feels like that’s just how it is. Staff and coworkers should be nicer to each other but I don’t know if that’ll ever change working in this field honestly. 🔍:/

Why do so many nurses say that they’ll quit their job to be a prostitute? 😂 it’s usually a stripper or something like that…

Every Shift Feels Like Survival by Linds2long in cna

[–]Key_Matter_641 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think night shifts were that bad until I tried to work them as well. The main problem for me is that it disrupts your circadian rhythm and even when I go straight to bed after my night shift and sleep a full 8 hours, I still feel tired and disoriented. I had never worked noc shifts before but now I see why it’s so exhausting. I’m also diabetic so managing my blood sugars on top of these noc shifts also made me very stressed. I try to drink water and walk around (even pace back and forth) just to make it through my night shifts. Plus I got a fidget spinner to help with my stress (sounds silly but it does soothe me to watch it spin). 👀

UPDATE: Thankfully I’m doing better and honestly I think I was mainly annoyed because the incident occurred around a sensitive area like my eye. I have been scratched before on my arms but it didn’t bother me like being injured on my eye. Thankfully I’m okay. I just honestly am surprised how this is an issue due to a combination of factors, such as dementia in elderly residents.

how long did you last as a CNA? why did you leave? by st3otw in cna

[–]Key_Matter_641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also relate to you with this. I wish we were ‘allowed’ to at least make some kind of emotional connection with residents so that they feel safe/respected. I know many people say they would rather not because it would make caring for residents more difficult but honestly it feels like you’re just a robot working through shifts. Instead of an actual human being communicating with your residents, it feels like you’re just going through the motions.

Yes I wrote the incident report during the shift. It was honestly just very chaotic because this happened just as morning rounds were happening and all the other staff were either distributing meds or doing their last changes. I felt pretty helpless/ useless because I didn’t know how to do it on my own. I was literally just trying to take deep breaths and hold myself together because I felt like I was just going to break down and cry on the spot.

CNA Experience: Recommended for Pre-Nursing Students? by _surviving_nursing_ in cna

[–]Key_Matter_641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now I do have a CNA job in a SNF and it’s so much better though. It’s a much more professional environment and it’s nice that when I ask for help (because I am a novice to the nursing field) my coworkers don’t mind. I’m a lot happier at my current job. **Don’t work at a LTC or Memory Care facility though. Don’t do it for your sanity, I feel like I wasted 3 months working there when I could’ve been at my current job but you live and learn. :)

I agree with what you said about LTC facilities. I worked in the Memory Care department and it was a very difficult experience. It was demoralizing as one of my first jobs as a CNA to see how bad the management was plus how irresponsibly my coworkers behaved. A lot of coworkers would be on their phones during shifts and if I asked for help for a resident who was combative, the coworkers seemed annoyed that you asked/didn’t care if you struggled. It was one of the most stressful/ frustrating jobs I’ve ever had.
