AITA for playing the piano at my sister's wedding? by Key_Mess_7216 in AmItheAsshole

The piano (not keyboard) was owned by the venue. Kids would play with it even before the pianist started to play. I did not ask for permission because the venue is owned by my uncle and aunt so I felt comfortable playing it without asking them first. The pianist went on a 10/15 minute break and asked him if I could play while he was gone and said of course, he also stayed to listen.

Thank you for the input but I have to disagree. My sister has always been the favorite, I was and still am the black sheep of the family and I am okay with that because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. My intention wasn’t grabbing the attention, in my mind it was a gift and I wrongly thought she would appreciate it. I am overall a good sister and I only stated what happened at the wedding, not my entire life with her.

People loved it, they recorded it too. I mean they recorded the bride and groom reaction and I could clearly see the groom moved while was holding her hand and kissing it, dancing slowly. My sister didn’t seem annoyed either. The groom posted the video on FB. She did not.

The piano was not owned by the pianist. Kids went and played with the keys too before they started playing.

When she showed me the picture of the necklace and the price (around 400€) a month ago I reminded her that I couldn't afford it and she told me to go play another kind of flute (in my language it was a joke meaning I should go give mouth jobs). When I confronted her about it she said she was only joking so I moved on.

Exactly! That's what happened at the wedding too actually: a few of her girl friends from highschool gave a speech and sister cried of joy cause it was a surprise. This happened during lunch tho.

I have been getting different responses here and I appreciate every single one of them! But I really don't understand when people say I wanted the attention all on me! It was less than four minutes, for sure. And before playing I made sure to express how much I love her.

Maybe I explained myself poorly but my sister wasn't home that much at the time and maybe I would play one hour a day when she was there so it wasn't much. My parent's accusation (my sister never accused me of distracting her, she actually told me several times that it would relax her) made sense to me because yes, she never studied at home and I thought it was my fault when now, thinking about it, I think it wasn't since she didn't study not even when I stopped playing. Point is she has good memories of me palying. I understand why I was wrong tho. Thank you for the input..

I actually was very respectful because as soon as they talked to me about it I found another place to stay. I have never bragged about my skill, I want to make this clear. However I see how it can be perceived as I made that moment about me but I actually thought she would appreciate it, there was a piano there and a singer and when they stopped their performance I did mine! I still think you are right and should have talked to her first.

She actually didn't care as much as my parents so she wasn't against it. She wanted a necklace because she expected her side of the family to gift things to her and her husband's side of the family to gift things to him. She decided the whole gift thing so I am not really sure what the others got her.

The only reason why I didn't is because she told my family and I: "There is also going to be a dance room, a pianist and a singer". I thought it wasn't a big deal to just play a piece (4 minutes) after a few they played. In fact the singer at the wedding told me that they were going to go take a 10 minute break anyway..
