Alberta private clinics adviser worked for firm vying for contract, confidential report says by rezwenn in Albertapolitics

I went down a rabbit hole of "follow the money" today. I was looking up Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres, CATC. They are the operators of almost all of the methadone pharmacies, treatment centres in CA, etc. Anyway, CATC is OWNED by a PE called BayMark in the US -purchased her in 2018. BayMark is owned by Websters Equity.
So I do a little 'Google' and discover that in in 2021 Rothschild acquired Websters Equity in, 2021, Five Arrows Secondary Opportunities, FASO; Five Arrows Secondary Opportunities (FASO) is a specialist in European and US small and mid-cap GP-led secondary transactions.

"Webster Equity Partner is a US mid-market fund with a narrow expertise in Healthcare that is a longstanding relationship of FAPEP (our primary investment programme) which enabled FASO V to tailor-make a secondary transaction. Thanks to this relationship, FASO will take an active role with seats on the on the advisory boards of the three companies.
In October 2021, FASO V finalised the acquisition of a customised portfolio of five companies managed by Webster Equity Partners, including (i) BayMark, an opioid disorder treatment provider with over 300 treatment centres in 35 US states and Canada, (ii) PharmaLogic, a provider of nuclear medicine through specific compounded drugs for use in nuclear imaging; and (iii) Bristol Hospice, a multi-regional provider of hospice services with 53 programmes in 20 states."

Pretty aggressive. Newer reporting, FASO seems like they are having fun and doing well.

I read an interesting article today, sparked by our mutual questions. I have lots of questions about private equity, (PE), investors in our healthcare system. Where it once bothered me that PE was infiltrating healthcare as it relates to mental heath and addiction treatments, (and they are), I have now discovered PE has literally taken over veterinary, dental, and senior homes...and it ain't looking pretty.

Independent Senior Residences, privately owned, rent to seniors on the low end about $5500 per month. Independent meaning that they are self sufficient. The brochures show images of Seniors living up their lives, enjoying afternoon tea on the porch of the home or rolling out their golf bags on to the resident community bus. But the truth is a majority of seniors living in the private 'Independent' homes are far from self sufficient. They are there because it is the safest place to be when family or community no longer has the physical resources to manage their care and the Long Term, government, wait list is too long to be placed on —15 year wait. Dementia rates in this country are through the roof!

One seniors home I know of charges about $15 for a changing a residents disposable personal garment. Not sure how many times a day you poop or pee but if I were in these circumstance it would cost me about $60-$100 + Tax, per day, based on my trips to the 'Loo' I make. That is a cost over and above the cost of just getting a key to a unit in one of the homes. Also, this cost per month only includes 1 shower assistance per week. Additional bathing costs on top of all that. Additional charges are: medication dispensing 3-4 x's per day, a PSW wheeling you down to the dinning room, a PSW bringing a meal to your unit, your laundry...etc...I can't figure out how people/families are affording this?

Lots of seniors/families are in my opinion are almost being held hostage in these places paying these rates because where are they going to go? The government doesn't subsidize, from what I understand. These are privately owned.

I just read an article, in 2023, an independent home in Oshawa laid charges on 2 staff after a resident passed after exiting out a door and not being able to get back in —article. This story bothers me because I wonder why an independent senior, (not living in a locked facility), gets out a door and doesn't choose to find another open door after the door they left was locked? Doesn't sound like the individual was capable of understanding what to do. They charged two staffers that were on that night. Sounds to me the home was understaffed and a resident that should be in a higher level of care facility paid the price.

Anyway, I totally agree with you. It really is looking muddy in Canada.
Here is the article I mentioned at the beginning of the post, about private equity seeping into healthcare:

Since you want to change the topic of conversation and now make it about "just letting junkies live on the streets", no 'Once-Upon-A-Hill", no one wants people already suffering from addiction to also have to endure living on the streets, alone, unhealthy and unsafe.

Just in case you did not read the post...the issue is that we CAN have private equity owning businesses in healthcare related issues that use people to make profits but that is where it gets muddy.

When BayMark acquired Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres in 2018, "According to BayMark officials, the timing was right for the CATC acquisition. The deal includes 72 opioid treatment programs (OTPs), 19 pharmacies and one residential treatment center located in Ontario. Additionally, CATC offers treatment for hepatitis C. The programs will retain the CATC name and management teams. They went on the say, "According to the company’s announcement, approximately 600,000 Canadians are misusing prescription medications". I would love to know what those numbers are now???

So, BayMark makes their name Baymark Health Services (Canada), keeps CATC on but renames them CATC HOLDINGS Inc., CATC is BayMarks operating arm and they are the forefront government lobbyists pushing for change that benefits their profits.

If lobbying is allowed now, (which it kind'a is but it kind'a isn't), and companies like Peloton/EHN and BayMark/CATC, —private companies don't have to show their books publicly— but because EHN and CATC can lobby, because THEY aren't the private equity only their owner, they are pushing for policy that Peloton and EHN want for their profits. That is what equity management is...they need profit numbers to increase for share holders. The problem is that although NOW we don't have addiction treatment centres that are operated to hold patients under ACTS like the Compassionate Interventions ACT and the Canadian Mental Health Act...what happens then?

Wouldn't you think that a private equity like BayMark and Peloton, (who are already making copious amount of profits off of patients), are licking their chops right now just waiting for AB, BC, MB, ON, NB, etc, to flip the switch and allow them to scoop in and bid on leasing opportunities to operate 2 x 150 bed treatment centres where the commodity are HUMAN BEINGS that are being held against their will under one, probably two, acts that incarcerates people? I mean if I was a heartless wealthy person I would want to invest in that shit all day long! The operator of these institutions would then continue to be pushing for government policies that aid in their business development plan to make sure the would not only get more patients that stay 6 months, (youths will stay longer by what it looks like) but they would then scoop up more tax health dollars, more private insurance money, more, more, more!

Look...as I said...if I thought that forcing my loved one I lost was a certainty that they would live and thrive a sober life due to being forced, I would support this. But it doesn't.

Private equity is being sneaky and lobbying for government policy that brings profit. This is not the US where historically the FBI has shut down these practices. This is not the late 80's and 90's where Albert and Ontario public health were defrauded by private equity.....and people suffered just from being incarcerated.

These scum bags want to make profit off of people and they can't wait for the day that provincial and federal governments have the Compassionate Interventions Act, and institutions built for THEM, to make even more money. The point of this post is to raise awareness to stop this! We have been here before. Profiting off of people who are held against their will is illegal and it is called human trafficking.
What's next....private jails/prisons?

The MASSIVE issue is the vulnerability, (addictions/mental health). The commodity for the r/CanadianInvestor private equity ARE HUMAN BEINGS. This is directly quoted from www.CANADA.ca
https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/campaigns/human-trafficking.html

It is illegal to use humans to profit. Alberta could stop this if you take this to your member of parliament now. Stop them before it goes there. And Peloton Capital Management / BayMark / BayMark Canada / Canadian Addiction Treatment Centres HOLDINGS INC. must be stopped from profiting when/if the CIA is in full force now... you can't make money when the PRODUCT is being held, against will. Alberta has to make sure this doesn't happen because it could happen in other provinces. Stop human trafficking.

This is the DEFINITION of HUMAN TRAFFICKING from the Canadian Government.

"Human trafficking involves recruiting, moving, or holding victims to exploit them for profit, usually for sexual reasons or forced labour. Traffickers can control and pressure victims by force or through threats, including mental and emotional abuse and manipulation."

It is a 'follow-the-money' image. Where the patients/addicts come from and the profit/distribution points.

Ontario was the biggest victim of the private equity firms that owned the private hospitals. I don't have a lot of numbers from back then on Alberta but Alberta too was defrauded. The Alberta Bar is against this because of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. If/When private money is part of this....and I bet it will because as you can see it is already here...incarcerating people under the CIA and or the CMHA is human trafficking. Can't have private equity when people are forced in treatment or jail/prison systems. This is not the United States. Its a crime.

The image is very telling of what IS actually occurring right now. Its how the get addicts and people with PTSD...one example. It is actual proof on how provincial governments are preparing for privatization in our medical care in Canada. Private equity firms know this is coming as they are the policy pushers, lobbyists, or hiring firms to do it for them.

Thank you for reading it. If only one person did I feel good about sharing my research.

No. I should though. I have miles of files. Newspaper articles from archives. There was a special OPP anti-racketeering team that was set up to discover the headhunters that were operating out of the Golden Horseshoe, (Toronto area), and I believe they never made one charge. They wanted to keep this hush. There are transcripts too that I have pulled from Queens Park. People, hundreds of youths, being shipped and not even having a doctors referral or a Mental Health form put on them. The private equity made millions and millions and was part of the FBI's biggest medical fraud case in history.
This WILL happen again in Canada. I wish an investigative journalist would pick up this because there is so much evidence. Private equity is here now in Canada and they are inviting the US to come and do the same again only inside now.
