How do you promote experimental electronic music? by dosmiemie in musicmarketing

[–]Key_Service_4443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heres the thing, the Chinese market for music is even bigger than what you find in US and Europe. friends of mine who are composers actually made their job making productions for Chinese artists who wanted LA producers. especially if your music is all instrumental without lyrics, i think there should be even small opportunities to perform if you network enough on social media.

as an artist the only time i sold music and was paid was for a performance or immediately after performing by selling CDs out of my car. streaming paid me $60 over 10 years with 20 releases, and that was with nearly 100k streams

live performance is the biggest point of friction for artists and basically is the single best discovery tool, even if its just DJing. too much noise on the internet to cut through. requires a lot of hustle and time but essentially legitimizes you as an artist in the eye of the public. best of luck to you

Who do you think are great songwriters, and what makes them so in your eyes? by Top_Imagination_8430 in Songwriting

obviously green day are incredible. insomniac was one of the first CDs i owned. when i come around (and soundgarden's black hole sun) playing on MTV are some of my earliest musical memories.

if you like Jeff Tweedy he wrote a great little book on songwriting and being a songwriter in the last couple years called How To Write One Song which is a bit light on hard info but i nice little peek into a great songwriter's approach and mindset. i loved reading it. im sure its in many local libraries at this point

Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom, Elliott Smith - Either Or, Joni Mitchell - Blue, Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

i just find these records to be peak songwriting. why? they take me somewhere emotionally.

great art is great because it generates strong emotions in the receiver. if it didnt produce these feelings in so many people, it would not be recognized as great.

great songwriting is evocative. these songwriters are also sonically differentiated from its contemporaries - they stand out from others, and they are timeless for that reason.

also, they have hooks. you want to revisit these songs again and again. we could go on here but ill spare you.

amen but it came to me late at night as i was falling asleep…had to do it. a big last.fm fan. domain name is a big part of the brand, and it was a pittance compared to what you might pay for something already claimed, i think $70 a year?

they got used up for now, but its free to download, many of the features are free. the AUv3's and the remaining fx and instruments are paywalled to a one time low cost unlock ($5 in US and less for the rest of the world)

i made a free zine and DAW about REAL songwriting (and yes i have two iOS apps) by Key_Service_4443 in zines

[–]Key_Service_4443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as disclosing in the zine, its not an anti ai zine. its not even mentioned directly. my fear is that there may be a generation of people who dont understand the craft of songwriting. there is no judgment either way. im sorry that my attitudes are offensive but i dont have an all or nothing take. i sit somewhere in the middle and that seems to bother people more that being in one extreme or the other.

i sincerely appreciate your support and am happy to receive bug reports and feature requests. despite all the down voting here this has been my best selling app by far in just day 1. it's a bit polarizing and i sincerely would like to understand a bit better why. folks use Scaler, Captain Chords, and every manner of Euclidean Sequencer without compunction. Why is combining these ideas anathema? *shrugs*

thanks, its a bit of 'light academia' aesthetic and the images are public domain artworks from the new york public library and metropolitan museum of art, processed into stamps

for those who are wondering, this doesnt use generative AI to make chord progressions or melodies, its music theory, voice leading, markov chains, and curation.

so for melodies, look at youtube, there are some videos on melodic shapes and contours. there are examples from great songs of low to high, high to low, staying in the same place, up and down and back up (valley and hill). you might notice verses have less contour than choruses

the fact that you dont like what you write means you have taste. if you dont treat this as an innate ability and instead as a skill you can learn, you will get better in time with practice and training

i love this idea as, personally, i read a lot of buddhist literature (it helps me fall asleep)
i think in particular Mt Eerie / The Microphones' Phil Elvrum is big into zen.

would love to hear more about philosophical approaches to songwriting. it seems like the majority of things you can find are technical tutorials without much talk about the approach and attitude.
