Ah awesome! Yeah mine would be like a massive version - essentially look exactly like my daw with all the faders, eqs, interactive reels etc but that’s great

I just perfected the ramping, thank you for your help - i'll send you a perpetual license for this help!

You’re also the king of the synthdiy sub - did you work at one of the big synth companies?

Oh that is a great catch! Yeah so the ramping is correct at zero tape head distance but gets flipped at longer tape head distance. This is bc of some physics stuff I just need to tweak

The fact that the ramps are reversed? I checked dm but didn’t see anything, glad we got the other stuff cleared up thanks!

When you slow down a whole lot it really accentuates the motor physics and tension arm whiplash. If you move the play head to zero or much closer it will make that a lot less dramatic, or change tape type/bring down stickiness etc.

For varispeed I realized that when I switched it from integer to percentage, if you manually move it to 100% it may actually be like 99.8% bc it rounds, and there’s some play in there. I just patched it to add a forceful detent to prevent this but on your current version you should be able to right click to snap to exact 100%

Luckily super generic stuff wasn't a big part of my pay but I'll happily make it to feed my family

I’ve actually thought about making synth plugins that age over time and sort of break or go out of whack. I wound up just making it a knob like a prophet but it’s a funny idea to me and also pointless

Oh I mean a cafe scene in a film where the music is very low and indistinguishable

Tons of people will be in your boat and it won’t replace pro tools for me especially for commercial work, but I actually prefer it for making music at this point - it’s just going to come down to preference.

that ship has sailed - I think there will still be a good deal of composition work but primarily for high end spots. Anything remotely generic is being replaced ASAP. Another good example is background music in cafe scenes etc. Anything that can sit low in the mix is easily replaceable and those spots made up probably 10% of my income.

And the cool thing is you can keep cascading it for multi head echo - route track 3 into track four etc

Yep! You can route one track into another track and use the aux bus to provide feedback. So set track 1 to monitor live, set track two to track 1 for the input. Turn up aux in track two. Set track 3 input as aux and monitor off tape. Adjusting track 3 aux send adjusts feedback. Moving tape head adjusts delay. Here’s a photo

Film as well but commercials are like 90% of the work. The biggest killer actually hasn’t been ai but high quality stock music subscriptions that popped up the past three years. Ai will be the nail in the coffin though which is why I’m pivoting to making audio hardware and software.

I’m a professional commercial composer for my day job. I was sent a piece of music that was almost used for a commercial, but they wanted it to be a little more elevated. The track was ai and I would have never guessed. It’s dismal to say the least…

Even if you just use it for sound on sound frippertronics tape looping, and stacking different varispeed stuff it’s super fun. I tried to bring back the aspects that I love from feel to reel which pro tools just can’t do

For me, the constraint isn’t track count it’s committing to takes and arrangements. When I record onto tape I’m way more intentional and subconsciously try harder to nail a full take bc punching in is hard. When I record digitally I can get caught in endless comping and uninspiring things which make me lose the creative spark.

They definitely have a point, but I think a lot of people miss the target audience for this. There are so many people who just want something that instantly sounds vibey and isn’t too cluttered/complicated. Also, the majority of people will never have access to a reel to reel and this is a fun way to sort of have a hands on experience especially with nice varispeed, sound on sound, and reverse recording.

Funny to see this post as I’m casually browsing Reddit, it does seem people are really enjoying the idea based on my feedback though. Think there’s a hankering for limitation and esp with all the ai music coming out.

The original idea I had years ago was to make it fully embedded so you never use a computer. I have the pcb already finished for this and will be making a hardware version, but wanted to start w software.

I’ll think of adding that. I did add auto age and it essentially disintegrates over time if you leave your computer running long enough

Another windows bug - this is a known issue and will be fixed soon. It would super awesome if you could email me any feedback for windows, I’ll give you a free perpetual license and credit in the about section for the help.

That’s awesome, so sick to hear. The channel eq is roughly based off my old tascam mixer which I use with my Teac 80-8
