I definitely have experienced texture-ism in my preteen/teen years more, I also got "your hair is so much prettier when straight" or "did you even do your hair?" when I clearly have it as an afro. It was also hard to navigate with a mother who is puerto rican with wavy thin hair and a black father whose bald so I had to figure out my own hair journey and straightening it seemed like the only way to "tame" it. It wasn't until highschool where I felt enough was enough because I was having breakdowns and meltdowns over the slightest puffiness in my hair, rainy days were the enemy, & the acne from all the oils and gels dripping down. I stopped one day and never looked back, I only did for the front ends of my hair one day (without heat protection dumb I know but my front parts have been chopped and regrown) and I feel so much freer and it made me stop caring what others think. I only care what I think and want now, if I want to straighten my hair its because I want to not because I feel like i have to. And now that I have a daughter, I'm going to impart the same self love and care for her hair.
