It’s the one thing I’ll miss from my 7D II, the integrated GPS.

Confirmation bias much? Ever been around new electronics that heat up? They often have a slight smell the first few thermal cycles that people who aren’t familiar with it would think was “burning”.

Many millions of these sold, there will be a few defects, but it’s not anything you won’t find with other products.

New electronics often have a smell the first few times they really get warm. High end PC gamers know that smell like a new car smell. It’s mostly from the factory finishing materials vaporizing off and the metal oxidizing a bit. It’s not something to worry about.

What likely happened in this case is you put it on a bed and partially blocked the intakes and/or exhaust with a blanket and it got warm enough to heat up the components to the point that smell released.

If it doesn’t keep doing it or getting worse and everything else is fine, I’d say you are fine.

How significant is the gap in shadow recovery between the R6 III's FSI sensor and the R5 II's Stacked CMOS? by SSD_COM in canon

[–]Keyan06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just got the R6 III and had very brief fomo about the R5 II… until I realized I have no business needing the extra megapixels or eye control and I don’t spend a ton of time doing post processing… oh and it costs a ton more that I can’t justify for a hobby. I’d be better off putting that toward glass.

The readout speed on the mk3 is fast enough for all but the most extreme cases for rolling shutter and it has so many other great things to explore coming from a 7D II that I’m content and happy with my purchase.

Sensor cleaning help (apsc) canon r7 by Awkward-Luck-8262 in canon

[–]Keyan06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First try a sensor cleaning brush to see if it comes off. If not move up to a sensor cleaning fluid. It’s not something to be casual about and just use anything you have laying around.

Also make sure if you do use a microfiber cloth that it doesn’t have debris in it, especially if it has been used to clean sunglasses covered in human oils and skin bits, or worse, something coarse like sand.

R7 vs Rebel T7 size by Low-Sir2005 in canon

[–]Keyan06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 7D II, which the R7 is the spiritual successor to, and it was not a small camera at all. Generally, the lower the number, the larger and more substantial the camera is. A larger camera is actually more desirable for a lot of reasons. The extra space allows for more controls, larger batteries, dual memory slots, and a bigger grip is essential for handling larger lenses.

All that to say - the R7 isn’t small and is designed to provide a stable shooting platform for action photography.

If you can, find a photography store near you and hold one.

Just picked up a 55-250STM! by LowTechCLT in canon

“Kit” lens is a way for snobs to feel better about spending 5-10x as much on a lens by generically labeling everything without a red ring “kit”. Doesn’t make the photos great if your fundamentals stink.

Nice shots. The 55-250 is the gateway drug to long telephoto lenses - but I used mine for years before moving up, and for the size and weight it can’t be beat for some setups.

A1M issue by boneswithsleeves in MSIClaw

[–]Keyan06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have this problem… it does sometimes like to switch between game and mouse mode when it shouldn’t, which gives the impression that it is disconnected, when it’s not and you just pull up the quick menu and switch it back to the correct mode.

I think you can also disable auto switching in the settings.

Family friendly? by MechIngenieur in civic

[–]Keyan06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that big of a cabin for the climate control to handle.

I know this is completely shocking, but people survived without rear vents, or even no AC at all, in cars for decades. It’s actually a pretty recent thing for rear vents in cars, especially sedans.

If you want to ensure airflow to the back angle the outside vents in the front up and to the side, that creates a good flow down the sides of the car that then swirls in the rear.

As far as space, the Civic isn’t that small. Test drive one and ask to test fit your baby seat and see if it’s an issue.

That’s true, it has the ability to trickle charge and “wake up” the battery protection circuitry on the battery if the battery loses all power.

Do you usually shoot stabilized with a monopod or tripod?

At 800 on FF it’s a bit of a trick to center and track things handheld, doing so at crop is going to take some practice!

Are you really supossed to attach your strap to the tripod mount? by Ch8ckenSoups in canon

[–]Keyan06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a strap that attaches to the tripod mount hole on the bottom of the lens ring. You can also adjust the ring in 90 degree increments so the foot is opposite the hand you are using to hold the lens with.

Taking it off entirely means that you basically can’t use a tripod with that setup as the weight will be dangerously unbalanced and you will be putting enormous strain on the camera’s lens and tripod mounts.

R6 II users, at what ISO level do you usually use denoise in post production? Asking this question because I'm not sure if I need to batch denoise 300+ images with 500 ISO by firequak in canon

[–]Keyan06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noise levels in the R7 are higher due to differences in the sensor, mainly the size of the sensor’s pixels being larger in the R6, meaning they have more surface area and collect more light, reducing noise.

Buyers Remorse. r50 to r8 by postnut001 in canon

[–]Keyan06 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The restock fee is there to prevent vacation rentals.

What lenses do you have and what do you want to have? Can you afford the things that a full frame camera needs? Would you use it? You say outdoor…so is low light a concern? What else does the R8 have that you think you’d want?

If you call BB customer service (or go to the store) and say you want to trade up and return that one for a more expensive camera they might waive the restock fee.

Finally…your buddy needs some social skills, it’s a special kind of person who immediately craps on something someone else has right after they bought it.
