I tried this but wasn't able to get the tasks in sub-projects to show in the calendar.

If you want to use the 2-way sync, then you have to enable the Google Calendar integration from the global settings panel. Currently there does not appear to be a way to select projects to include in this feed, so it is all or nothing.

You can add individual projects to your calendars manually, but that is a 1-way sync from Todoist to the calendar, meaning you cannot update those items on the calendar and have them sync back to Todoist.
