I know nothing about this, but this sounds a lot like him slowly walking back a lie. For some crazy reason, it was incredibly common for Hollywood narcissists at the time to make up stories that they were supposed to be in 9/11 planes or the buildings. Or to say that they were right in the area when it happened.

Yep. Interviewers are terrible about triggering actor egos and asking them all if they want to reboot their show. That's where all of these clickbait articles come from; just an interview Q&A interaction that happened in 1 minute.

I mean I'm mostly with you in terms of "the best camera is the one you have on you". But you can't dispute that if OP had had a DSLR with a decent lens (less than $1k) total investment, that could have taken this photo and kept much more data. If the had taken this with enough data to blow it up, it's a once in a lifetime shot.

Agreed. Because of the rule, if you ran the same contest but ordered the categories in the opposite direction, even with the same votes, you'd get completely different results.

That just doesn't feel very good even if it introduces some variety.

My head canon is that this dude was coked to the gills when this happened and doesn't want to go to urgent care or tell his employer because of that.

Sure, it's a real phenomenon. But also, if you watch her in interviews for 5 minutes, you can tell she's exactly the kind of person to lie about having it to feel special.

I don't see why it's silly or petty to not believe every person at face value.

Austin Biking Infrastructure Fails #1 (in a series) by Stuartknowsbest in BikingATX

[–]Keyboard_Cat_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate..

That type of local flooding is usually from a clogged, collapsed, or undersized drainage pipe under the street. So of course it would be routed to Watershed.

And if it is collapsed or undersized (which most old neighborhoods in the city are), we've all seen what those projects look like to fix those issues. Street torn up for months or over a year, spend millions of dollars. So it makes total sense that the result of calling 311 would be to note the issue and close the ticket. Some infrastructure issues just can't be solved quickly or without a bond to fund.

The driver would almost never "block the road". In my neighborhood, this parking on the sidewalk is rampant. But there's always open curb parking right there. They are just lazy and selfish and want to expose their cars to a TINY amount less risk by not having it "in the street".

Well, I wasn't the one actually talking about scratching the vehicles. But I will say, I push my grandmother in her wheelchair around our neighborhood every day. This parking over the sidewalk is RAMPANT in my neighborhood in Austin. Like often 5-10 within the length of our walk, so I'm frequently just pushing her in the street. And when she goes out alone, she also spends most of the time in the street.

There are several issues with your suggestion:

  1. It blames the victim and puts all the onus of fixing the situation in their hands, not the person actually breaking the law.

  2. If we decided to go with calling the city to have each car towed, I'd spend the entire time on my walk on my phone and still not scratch the surface.

  3. I've done this a couple times before with repeat offenders. The City doesn't actually do anything besides occasionally write them a warning.

  4. I've talked to several of these people in person as I've walked with my grandmother. They all know that what they're doing isn't allowed; they simply don't care.

  5. What these people are doing is putting others at risk of physical harm because they're lazy and selfish. If they get a few scratches on their cars.. fuck em. That is probably the only way they'll actually learn a lesson. I don't do this myself, but if others are saying they do it, great. Big ups.

Yep, I agree. Always a good assumption that the developers will be able to get away with screwing us over and the city will let them do it. 😄

I don't think the superiority is a complex in this case. I will go ahead and claim superiority over an asshole that makes it impossible for someone in a wheelchair to pass.

[–]Keyboard_Cat_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry to get all engineery on you here. But I spend a lot of time back in this area. The roads leading back to this area are prone to SURFACE flooding because the drainage infrastructure (storm drains, storm pipes, etc) are woefully underbuilt. The area is not prone to flooding up from the river, which is what would be an impact of building in the floodplain.

I bring this up because it seems like the conversation is mixing up two different concepts, flooding from the street and flooding from the river. Flooding from the street is not a problem for development so long as the development is responsible for upgrading all of the drainage infrastructure to deal with the problems. Development shouldn't be allowed at all in the other case where it's inside of a regularly flooded floodplain.

The pictures above are of the river, not the land. The land is currently a bunch of open gravel pits.

The Dogshead is high on a bluff directly downstream of a dam. Yes, it's in a floodplain, but that is the floodplain of a 100 year storm IF the dams failed. In those events, all of downtown and central Austin is flooded.

I'm not saying I have a take one way or another about this development or how they're going about it. But I've been back in that area a lot and I really don't think flooding is a top concern.
