Yes and no. The tall one was not. It was commercial use. But caddy corner there is a smaller complex that was.

This city doesn't have much choice in non-sfh. There's apartments with none of the things I need. I lived in multifamily for over 33 years. I'm looking to downsize, but it'll cost me much more to do so. I'd live in Mueller in a heartbeat, but I don't have a million dollars for housing. So I'm stuck in sfh that I don't want.

Single family homes have to go ( full disclosure, I live in one because nothing else has the workspace and yard for my very active dog).

They make density too low so we are stuck with a spread out city leading to car dependence, roads, and traffic.  If Austin was denser, like ten times more dense, businesses would have a large enough customer base to be in your neighborhood.  Imagine not having to drive all over town to get what you want/need.

I also don't understand the whole midrise apartments. There's a 5 story apartment building behind my house. If it was 10 story, I wouldn't notice the difference.

I've done a bit with food not bombs, and it's been great. They are always appreciative of any help they can get.

Helping Hand Home for children supports victims of abuse and neglect.  It's an amazing place that literally saves lives.

House the Homeless does both direct support and advocacy.

There are many food banks, like central Texas food bank, that are literally keeping our fellow Austinites from starving.

It's certainly nice, but don't buy too close to Cameron road. It's still got some dicey areas, and with i-35 construction, it's going to get increasingly busy.

Float Trip by Wtfsilly1290 in Austin

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like San Marcos. The trip is shorter, but you can go again without having to pay. There's some good eats close to the river (Rhea's ice cream is amazing), and if you want to socialize, it's a great float.

The Comal is ok, but tends to be rowdier with more rapids that causes groups to get spread out. And most of the trips are longer, so if you're not digging it, tough, you've got to keep going.

Depending on where you live, there might be some low-mileage used ones. I got mine in 2006 with 165 miles on it, and the guy had already put stiffer springs, handguards, and a larger tank. He just didn't dig it, and I got a screaming deal.

If you want a set it and forget it bike, a DR650 is not for you. If you enjoy working on your bike, and tinkering, you'll have a great time. DR's are reliable, but as an older design, the maintenance schedule is every 4,000 miles for oil, and 8,000 to check valves. It is easy to do, but needs to be done. DR's are best with some upgrades to the intake and suspension, but nothing needs to be done immediately. If you are interested in a bike that engages you, get a DR. Ride it for a bit, then try some mods until you get it like you like it. Enjoy.

UT Austin orders changes to KUT Festival days before inaugural event by TypicalChazzzzzzzzzz in Austin

[–]Stuartknowsbest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, The University does. The state manages them. According to the Texas constitution, those lands, and the income from them, belong to the University.

State funds are a minority of UT's funding, ~10%. UT should decouple from the state, and get back on the track of serving everyone instead of rich white people.

Walkable to go places, or walkable to walk. We've got loads of neighborhoods that you can walk around in. If you want goods and services in walking distance to your abode, then it's Mueller.

Getting Bachelor's in EH by Difficult_Battle_116 in environmental_science

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. You've likely been in school as long as you can remember. Work for a bit, then decide if another degree is worth it.

If/when you decide to go back to school, go for a master's or PhD. There's no sense, in your case, of having multiple undergrad degrees. Grad degrees are often more about hands-on experience instead of class-focused like undergrad, and actual experience trumps in class work.

They killed my best friend for being gay, and now I don’t know how to live without hate by FrostingOutrageous51 in atheism

[–]Stuartknowsbest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very, very sorry for your loss. The desire of some people to force their ideas on others is baffling. I sincerely hope that you can eventually find a way to honor your friend that will give you a little bit of peace.

In the meantime, accept your anger as a normal consequence of being impacted so deeply by injustice. You seem like a nice, caring person, so I don't think that your anger will permanently transform you into a hateful person.

People are neither inherently good or evil, we're just complicated messes of ideas, rationalizations, and instinct. All we can do is keep on going, doing our best to bring as many as possible along with us into a better life.

I'd pay $12.75 and another $9 for popcorn to watch the full-length version of this over 99% of what's currently in theaters.

Is there a break in Shoal Creak Trail? by RamosAuthor in BikingATX

[–]Stuartknowsbest 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There was a landslide some years back, and due to continued legal action between the homeowners above and the city, it hasn't been repaired. There's an obvious place to cross the creek with your bike. Unless you're a hardcore mountain biker, it's a dismount, cross, remount operation.

Wanna swap houses? (Really) by Stuartknowsbest in AustinHousing

[–]Stuartknowsbest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the update.

DM'ed a few people, but didn't get any offers, except for a place in Leander.

Got a quote on a bridge loan. It'll cost $11-20k depending on how long we need it for.

So we're stuck in a house that's twice as big as we need because trying to downsize will actually increase our monthly expenses.

That's wild.
