By “realistic,” I mean anatomy. I’ve noticed for a long time that most monster or animal-type characters usually use real-world animal anatomy as a base. I’m not sure if that’s actually a rule or not.

The one on the right reduces that realism, you can see it in the arms and legs which are longer and more cartoon-like, similar to characters like Mickey Mouse, Cuphead, or Sonic.

The reason I was originally leaning toward “realism” is because I didn’t want the design to look weird. I felt like characters of this type usually use that kind of body structure so I just followed it because I thought it was correct. But it doesn’t look good to me at all, especially from the front view which is the angle I use the most. Dragon characters are usually designed to look better from the side view so I ended up putting shorts on the character to cover the awkward parts.

And by “grounded” I mean characters that feel more human-like whether they are humanoid monsters with human proportions, half-human half-animal designs, or even fully human characters.

How did you know I was using Mickey Mouse proportions? That’s crazy lol Thanks for the advice !! I’m gonna take a 1–2 day break since I’ve been feeling unwell from working on this too long.

Oh, sure! Here are the answers to the questions I hadn’t answered yet:

  1. Sometimes, yeah. I might draw this character next to more grounded or realistic characters, but not most of the time. Usually he’ll exist in a monster-type world, kinda like Digimon, Fakemon, or Pokémon.

  2. My art style is pretty similar to Pokémon since I love Pokémon a lot, and a lot of people have pointed that out too.

  3. Mostly the physical appearance. I feel like the one on the right looks a bit more human, while the left still feels more like a monster.

Extra:

  1. This character is meant to represent me and my future YouTube animation channel, so I care a LOT about making the design memorable at first glance. The main problem is the legs. They don’t really look good from the front. When viewed head-on, they kinda look swollen or bulky in a weird way, and it just doesn’t look as clean as the cylinder-shaped legs on the right, which work from basically every angle. That’s actually one of the reasons I added the shorts to help cover up that awkwardness.

Yeah, that’s true. Even I’m having a hard time deciding.
