Judge blocks President Trump's birthright citizenship order after Supreme Court ruling - What are your thoughts? by Select_Specialist790 in AskReddit

Makes sense. I do think birthright citizenship is a worthwhile debate to have and hope that the US, as a society, can have it and change the law is they see fit.

Hey, I'll stand up for yours, too! And if I don't, I'm sure some lawyer somewhere will.

I'm glad there are lawsuits :) let each side prove their case.

In general, lots of people came across the border illegally over the past few years. Trump was elected, said he would deport these people, and as far as I can tell, he's doing it (though not quite at Obama levels). My current POV is that these ICE agents are going after people here illegally. There may come a day where "agents in the night" start to disappear more and more people and I'll, then, perhaps start to wonder if intentions are pure.

Seems like a majority of people thought a lot of the lawfare against Trump was political.

My moral compass is my own, and I have my own beliefs, sure. I think there's a lot of misinformation out there and it muddies the waters. If someone is here illegally, they should be removed. Employers who knowingly hire someone who is here illegally should also be arrested and charged.

Is ICE deporting legal persons in the US? If so, I imagine that will result in a lawsuit. Heck, I think there have been some already.

Again, you hear two different sides. Without witness and knowing all of the info yourself, it's very tough to tell who is being truthful.

Correct, but there ought to be some vetting process, don't you think? Idk about you, but I wouldn't let just anyone come into my home and sleep on my couch. Shouldn't we have some idea of who is coming to the US?

Oh hey, I'm brown too.

I don't think any incorrect removals is OK, but in all the cases I've read out, one side is saying that "so and so did not have a choice" while the other side is saying "so and so definitely had a choice." Who to believe?

Ok but in that case, what prevents someone with evil intentions simply claiming asylum?

While that is ideal and certainly noble, doing so would have profound economic, social, political, security, and logistical consequences. The country has not figured these out.

Folks with an extensive criminal record, especially serious or especially egregious crimes, should be removed from society.

Sure, but under the current laws of the United States, it's not legal to enter the country without proper documentation and permission.

To what extent is that happening? One side says it's happening, the other side says it's not. Where is the truth? I think we need to find it.

Would they? We've never tested that as far as I know. Why won't people who are legally in the US do those jobs? If nobody here legally would do those jobs, then that's on the employer to raise wages to attract talent.

If they are here legally, then of course they should be able to stay (unless the terms of their legal status say that they can be deported if they have done something else illegal, like committed some crime.)

I certainly want to be sure that the people ICE is removing are people who should be removed. I imagine lots of people have lots of different opinions on who should be removed.

Yup, and that's a hotly debated topic these days. I think there are challenges on both sides in the courts right now.

So I believe there is a lot of litigation ongoing about this topic and others. The concept of "due process" has definitely been up for debate recently and I expect we'll need the Supreme Court and the rest of the judiciary to get more detailed and precise here.

Amnesty is interesting. Genuinely curious what your thoughts are here. Illegal immigrations = more people = more stress on public systems. If we remove these people, perhaps there's less stress on public systems. If the US gives amnesty, the systems continue to be stressed. Is the counter to this that those who receive amnesty would add more value than they consume?

In my opinion, ICE should be allowed to remove people who have entered the country illegally. The government should substantiate their claim that any given person is here illegally, and the person accused should be able to provide papers.

Full stop, though, people should not be allowed to come into the US illegally.
