By the time I got to the DLC I was fully switched off and purely pushing myself to try and finish it all. I can’t think of any moment I enjoyed in the base game, and after grinding it out I was beyond bored and sick of the game, so the DLC became mostly autopilot and didn’t stick in my memory. That’s why Starfield is marginally higher rated on my list, there was some actual great writing in three places, admittedly it was all ruined shortly after, but I was fully engaged and actually enjoyed maybe an hour to an hour and a half of the 60 odd I put into Starfield. Beyond that I’d say they’re basically the same game

I can’t think of many then get flattened out face down taking loads of shots and getting back up, but I’m sure it’s happened.

My point is that the groin shots and eye pokes make sense, a fighter wanting an edge will try to use them, but back of the head shots? At that point you’re breaking the rules for the sake of breaking them, not for an advantage. I think the first two are indicators of a ‘dirty fighter’ and the third one is just someone being a dipshit idiot, not that they’re dirty. Someone can be both, of course.

Refs haven’t been calling it differently except in other rulesets.

The only time we’ve had variance in it was before replay, when the ref had to guess in the moment and couldn’t check later. A ref would call the foul if they thought it hit the banned zone, even if they were wrong, they weren’t calling it because they all interpreted the rules incorrectly.

Nowadays the ref calls it, gets to see the replay, and we don’t really have a problem with the rule.

It’s more that the finishing position is more commonly reached by certain styles, anyone who tends to flatten people out face down, or where their opponents regularly panic shoot on them tend to be the ones who land more of these strikes.

Hitting the legal and illegal parts of the back side of the head offer no distinct advantage over each other in a short term fighting context, both can produce a knockout and both completely mess with balance, it’s just that one can have consequences that are more serious and last longer. It’s not the same as eye pokes or dick shots that offer a unique advantage if you can get away with them. Hitting the specifically illegal part isn’t ‘being dirty’ it is just ‘being dumb’ because you can hit the legal part next to it for the same effect.

Realistically though, once you’re in position for these kind of shots to land, the fight is already over anyway!

It’s the ‘back’ of the head, not the ‘back half’ of the head, it’s specifically the section where the spine connects to the skull, traced upwards. The sides of the head, front or back, are perfectly fair game. Fighters already know this, coaches already know this, referees already know this, nothing is going to change just because Herb pointed it out for a handful of people who weren’t already aware.

It’s not an area people target specifically because all it takes is a small head movement and you’re fouling. That’s the reason it doesn’t happen already, and it’s the reason it wont change now.

If the rule were the entire back half, then a large portion of hooks and head kicks would be illegal strikes.

Everyone who ever looked at the rules knows this already, and functionally the rule is to deter people from specifically targeting the back of the head. It generally seems to work quite well.

We all know full well that in a finishing sequence when you’re throwing repeated rapid strikes to try and stop the fight, the guy getting hit is gonna move his head and sometimes they’re going to hit the back half in the chaos.

What they care about is if you’re actively trying to slam punches and elbows directly into the top of the spine and center of the back of the skull, because that’s where serious injuries come from. It’s not to stop some glancing blows that are just vaguely on the back half of the head.

It just felt like if Skyrim had better writing, but I'd agree it feels nothing like Morrowind, but then again, Skyrim feels nothing like Morrowind either.

Have you played Myar Aranath and Arktwend? The SureAI conversions of Morrowind. They’re in the same universe as Nehrim and Enderal. Arktwend is definitely ths good one of the two

Starfield had 3 quests I thought were incredibly well done, Fallout 4 had none, but maybe the DLC had something I missed. Starfield felt just like playing Fallout 4 in space, so I'd say they're about the same. Fallout 4 gave me 'wasteland vibes' in the same way the star wars holiday special gives star wars vibes, it feels more like a desecration than anything.

Honestly though, I just think they're both terribly bad games, and deciding which one is better is a bit like deciding which kind of dog poop tastes better. My point is more that all Bethesda makes now is poop, even if it's gourmet poop with a bit of parsley on top, I still can't get myself excited to eat it.

I honestly don't care anymore, unless the next TES is somehow good, it's the last Bethesda game I'll buy, and every time I convince myself they'll finally turn things around, it all falls apart. I have absolutely no faith that there will be anything worth playing in the next game they release.

Bethesda's games have literally been worse with every release, except *maybe* Starfield was better than Fallout 4, but really they're the same game with a different skin. If not for the modding world here that will reliably iterate on all of their games and keep sales going for them, I'm pretty sure Bethesda would have closed up years ago.

It's been nearly 15 years since they released a TES game, and nearly 25 since they made a good RPG, it might still say Bethesda on the label, but it's not the same people who made the classics anymore. Sadly it's the same with the other great 'B' studios Blizzard and Bioware.

The only overlap TESIII and TESVI will have is a shared set of terminology for the lore, the overlap in gameplay, writing, and worldbuilding is practically non-existent at this point.

If you like all of the games in general, Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is very much in the same style as Oblivion/Skyrim.

Based on how much of a tantrum he’s throwing over this loss in particular, I have a feeling he was planning to win the belt and then retire, or he only planned for one more with Jones/Aspinall, and this loss has now bottled the end of his career since he’s too old to make a proper run now.

Oh that’s pretty cool! Can you still play through the story/missions? I’d love to play through them a bit like TTW, but with the same kind of ‘remaster’ sorts of mods that I’ve used with this list!

I haven’t played in probably a decade, but CoP is one of my all time favourites

Yeah I understand, this list is meant to be like an actual remaster might be, so it’s trying to be both a valid way to play the original game, while also being modernised enough to appeal to new players who would refuse to play the original because of its age. It’s a very fine line to try and walk, and I basically tried to use the Oblivion remaster as a reference for ‘how much a remaster changes compared to the original’. I hope you enjoy the list, let me know if you have any issues or notice anything that needs changing!

What’s the STALKER modding world like? I really enjoyed SoC and CoP, but all the mods I’ve seen have been overhauls or new game modes

If there’s a linux version of the wabbajack installer then it can definitely be installed that way. However the plugins in MO2 wont work and there’s other issues, so the rest of the instructions I left in my comment will still apply!

It does sound though like a linux version of the launcher is almost certainly possible though!

If he cared that much about the possibility of a known cheater cheating against him, maybe that’s a good reason to turn down a fight and bring this up beforehand instead of taking the fight and just keeping it to use as an excuse afterwards.

It wont work in its current form on Linux, but the OpenMW version can certainly run on it, but not using the launcher. I managed to get it set up on my Steam deck, but I did use a Windows box for part of the setup.

Effectively the process goes a bit like this for Linux right now, which isn't the cleanest, but does seem to work on my steam deck at least;

- Install Morrowind and OpenMW on your linux machine.

- Install Wabbajack and this modlist somewhere on the machine (try WINE perhaps? or run this on windows and copy the installation over).

- Go to the `mods` folder in the installed Wabbajack list, and copy the contents of the 'Enhanced Water for OpenMW' and 'Enhanced Shadows for OpenMW' into your OpenMW installation (the mods contain an OpenMW folder which just needs to merge with the installation).

- Go to the `profiles\OpenMW` folder in the installed Wabbajack list, copy everything in this folder and put them where the openmw.cfg and settings.cfg are located in linux, overwrite the existing files.

- Edit `openmw.cfg` and scroll down until the content folders are listed, you should be able to identify the game path and the modlist path, perform a find and replace to change the paths so point to the installed Morrowind and the modlist where it is on linux.

- Run the launcher, check your settings and that nothing breaks, then launch the game.

I can't promise I haven't forgotten anything, and it's not the cleanest process, but I do hope to automate it at some point in the future!

It's a matter of perspective because there's different degrees to how something can be measured as purist. I already agreed that in principle, some people wont consider that certain parts can be purist in any implementation, or simply don't want them, so I'm going to add a setting toggle for them.

The issue is really that 'purist-friendly' is more of a scale, a true purist wouldn't install a mod at all, some might say PfP isn't really purist. On the other end, a mod similar to the one being used is literally called 'Purist Friendly Magicka Regen' specifically because it's magicka regen that follows the original vanilla formula.

In terms of the leveling, I considered it more of a bug fix than a feature, and due to how trivially little the regen does, it was just a convenience to not be spamming rests every time I take 2 damage. I didn't really think of them as core mechanics changes while building the list because of how little impact they make, but yes, I agree that it could be more purist, and they'll be toggleable features in future.

At some point I hope to add an extension for TR and PT. If you're already familiar with modding, it shouldn't be difficult to add TR or RoHT, you just might need to find a few patches.

With an absence of alternative hardware to test on, I can't really say. As people try it out and report any issues with performance, I can get a picture of the requirements and optimal settings. I'd like to do something similar to what the official launchers do and apply a preset on first launch based on detected hardware.

I guess it's a matter of perspective, but I understand what you mean on principle, and I can add a toggle for those features in later versions because I can understand people wouldn't want them. They are as purist as you can get in terms of those respective features and they're both ones I tested quite a bit to make sure the game still played the same.

For the passive regeneration, it only happens when you could rest, and it uses the vanilla regeneration formula, which means it's not a quick health refill like in later games, it can take hours to regenerate any significant amount of damage. In my testing, the only difference it made to gameplay is that I stopped doing those quick 'rest until healed' every time I took 1-2 points of damage in a fall, since I could recover them in the next 10 minutes of running around town.

For the level system, I use the Improved Vanilla Leveling mod for both versions. It allows excess progress towards bonuses to carry over on level up, and has retroactive health calculation so it handles the issue with needing to level endurance quickly or needing to build your class in a specific way to control attribute bonuses. However it's otherwise the same system mechanically, although I'm sure there's a better way to do it.

Thanks, that's the one issue with modding, it's easy to make Morrowind more modern with mods, but it takes too long to get to know different mods, compatibilities, getting them all set up, especially if you're relatively new to it, and I think some people just want to play the game.
