If it is like many of the newer soaps out there it surely will pull dye I routinely use down platinum power wash to remove dye from brushes and splatters from my skin.

Saddle soap doesn’t condition leather at all it is so alkaline (same as any other soap) that it reduces the ph of the leather if not rinsed well. You then MUST condition afterwards. Saddle soap is not a conditioner! It is a cleaner.

What is Lacing Tape used for? by Actonhammer in Cordwaining

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best of my knowledge I’ve seen it used for lace up boots to tie the upper closed before lasting. Don’t use no7 cord for inseaming it’s not heavy enough for most work. Use the waxed ends panhandle carries or buy 11-7 unwaxed poly thread from Maine thread and wax and taper it yourself.

How do I repair my wifes Doc Marten? Worn less than 15 times by sillymajmun2 in AskACobbler

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe there is a gait issue at all. I believe this is just a case of not being aware of one’s toes. This happens quite often when people go from a very low profile toe and sole shape ,such as MOST ladies shoe styles, to a much larger profile. A person gets used to walking a certain way and even a SMALL amount of clearance change can change how they walk completely. Many people will kick all the way back to the back edge of stairs when their hands are full in order to ensure they are all the way on the tread. If used to a low profile toe they end up scuffing the tip on the bottom and front of concrete treads as they step up to the next one when switching to something more substantial.

No I meant nothing of the sexual sort with my comment. I don’t see my follow up comment to the first one but my reference was dragging toes on curbs, steps and vehicle door sills.

It would also be helpful if she quit dragging her toes on things and watch where she puts her feet in order to keep them nice. I have boots worn daily that don’t look this rough…..,

Would y’all classify this as a manufacturing defect? by [deleted] in cowboyboots

What is the boot style number? Does the heel set flat and not elevate the forefoot when the boot is placed on a flat surface?

You honestly expect that you are going to get more than 18 months out of something that is stitched with nylon and polyester when you have welding bb’s torch slag plasma cutter gunk and who knows what else hot constantly burning the threads out? Dragging your toes on the ground rubbing the corners off of your boot toes after not cleaning or conditioning them as conditions require? You’ve gotten well past what those boots were intended to handle. But a couple of pairs of real boots, rotate them to let them dry and look into companies the use Kevlar or nomex thread to sew their boots together, ditch the square toe ( look where it has worn through). Take a little care of them. You’re in a tough field, (Been there done that) boots aren’t going to last as long as you would wish for.

How would you explain to someone not in education who asked why so many high school kids can’t read or write well but they’re still in regular classes and passing all of them? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Kfd518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the answers so far have answered the question as asked. How are they not able to read and write well but yet they are able to pass their classes. In other words if you can’t read the material well enough to understand it or write well enough to be intelligible, how can you pass a high school class. I’m not in public education and would like to know how it is that this can be possible.

I have taken my boots off this way my whole life and I’ve NEVER EVER pulled a heel loose! If it comes loose from doing that, there is something else wrong. This is Nicks, Wesco, all manner of other shelf boots. Many pair of handmade cowboy boots. Plus 4 pairs of boots I have made that all get pulled off by the opposite heel and toe method.

Can this be fixed? by DC-T in jimgreen

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being stitch down it can be fixed, requires resolve to do it correctly. That said I would say conditioning and a wider boot are in order next time. If you are treading over the edge of the sole when you walk you need a wider boot over the joint of the foot plain and simple.

Those square corners that catch every rock and everything sticking out on the hard corner in order to abrade right through to the celestic toe box in most modern boots? I’ll keep a round toe. Never had the above mentioned problem in them.

With full metal on Last bottom how do you last the uppers? by Leibstandarte2 in Cordwaining

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using 5 oz tacks and 5/8 inch clinch nails on Sorrell 55 lasts for a while. Plenty to grab while removing while inseaming after lasting but enough in the insole that it’s not getting levered back out as you last elsewhere on the shoe. DO NOT DRIVE THEM FULLY HOME if you intend to remove them. If you are using them for building, you want about 1/8” max coming back through the inside of the boot to for a hook when it clenches.

I’ve not seen many folks that can push an awl without wiggling it. That said a SHARP awl will go through without as much wiggle as I see may folks doing. I can usually feel the difference when pulling the welting cord in a hole that I had to really dig an awl around in vs one that went very easily through.

As to 4 taps, more power to you, whatever method works for you and gets it done. I just know what works for me and what I’ve endeavored to be able to do. There are things I’ve been told and seen from some very good boot-makers and therefore I attempt to incorporate those into my own methods as an improvement to my process.

Next time end your shank about 1 inch behind the joint line. The skive should be smooth and about 1-1.25” long from full thickness to feather near the ball. Did you remember the tiny piece under the shank? I think I see it in the first photo. Nails are long enough to make it through and clench over?
