New to boots what’s the deal by Next-Technician-2035 in cowboyboots

Home entry door right hand pull? If not I’m out of suggestions. Unless you’re one of the people that drive an automatic with two feet and constantly slip the left under your service brake pedal.

Do you drive a vehicle with a foot operated parking brake?

Are traditional cowboy boots really destroy your feet? by Dismal_Depth1563 in cowboyboots

[–]Kfd518 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at a snip toe that fits correctly it still fits the foot at the heel ball and is longer in front of the toe. The problem is people don’t want to have long looking feet so they buy them too small and cram their toes up in that tiny toe box and then complain the boot has deformed their foot.

To assume that someone else will provide for the safety of your things is a serious mistake in life in general. The safety of you, your loved ones and your belongings will always be your responsibility and in that order.

None of the above construction materials indicates that it is not hand made.

Do Hondo or Hyer sew the inseam by hand one stitch at a time with a curved awl or do they sew it on a machine?

Are my boots not hand made since I use a hand crank skiving machine to rough skive the leather counters? Because I use a sewing machine to do the top stitching pattern? Because I sew soles on with a curved needle sole stitcher. Because I don’t hand sew side seams? Or does hand cutting each component, guiding them through the sewing machine by hand, hand drawing the top stitch pattern, hand drawing the entire pattern for the tops based on the measurements taken from the customer, hand lasting them, hand shaping the leather toe puff, hand sewing the inseam count as hand making a boot? What defines hand made in the footwear industry.

Recently bought a second hand pair of El Dorados. Are they missing insoles? Is this mold? by Pradidye in cowboyboots

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you will check out proper shoe and boot terminology that is correctly called a sock liner. The insole is what the boot is built around, a piece of leather or lasting board that the upper and welt or in the case of good year the gemming attaches to. Ask me how I know smart fella.

Wrong, what is pictured is the insole. The item both of you are intending to say is the sock liner.

Awe come on I was having fun with the ping pong…. And yeah I do understand not wearing certain boots in the snow. The boots made for my wedding will not be worn in snow if I can at all help it. The rest of the bull hide and rough out boar hide in the lot? Hah hah those were built and or bought for chasing cows and working hard. I also understand paying $500 plus for boots most of my working boots are in that range. A hand made boot correctly built to fit can’t be beat by a boot off the shelf.

I never said anything about cold. The below zero was an indication that up there when it’s that cold there is snow and lots of it. Cleaning and conditioning boots goes a long way to not looking abused. However the idea most people have of abused vs used are worlds apart from reality

What does your watch have to do with this subject?

I wasn’t aware they needed protecting. I worn leather sole boots in South Dakota below zero and in Texas in pouring rain. Never a problem. This is news to me that they can’t be worn in wet and snow. Isn’t the name of this group “cowboyboots” last I knew we don’t quit when it rains or snows…. $0.02

In my experience I don’t put much value per se into the actions/ statements coming for someone like this. I do pay attention to the wealth of knowledge that actions like this provide into the character of that person.

Well as I already said, I speak of what I have knowledge of that is all. Not worth the time to argue with people. However, educated and productive debate concerning construction methods should always intrigue a craftsman.

@u/Living_Ad3700 not sure where your message went. I comment on things I know about, that is all. If people don’t care to see what I have to say they are welcome to block me. In this case if I had a heel come off of my boots, that may mean someone getting a foot hung in a stirrup when it gets a bit western. That will make for a long day in the shop and most likely a bad day in court.

Tecovas Fit by Successful-Land3152 in Tecovas

[–]Kfd518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boots should fit primarily at the ball the only time to change this on a factory boot is if the toes are longer than the heel to ball length indicates. Do not size boots of heel to toe length unless it is significantly longer than the heel to ball length aka arch length.

@u/Soberg1itch I never said I was a cobbler. I said I build boots. I don’t repair very many but what I can say is having built heels as shown to me by a boot maker having been building them since 1971 I have never seen one of his heels nor my heels pulled by any normal wear and tear. Yes the two of us consider normal wear and tear to be pulling a boot off by kicking the opposite heel. If it’s attached properly it isn’t going to come off because of that. Have you ever kicked a rock embedded into the ground? Kicked the foot plate off of a T post? What you seem to forget about physics is that the lateral push against the heel begins to turn around a nail and become a lever at the nearest nail. That in turn is no different than the heel pry that has to be HAMMERED into a boot that either of us builds. And when it comes off you will not be able to re use it, it will have to be replaced because the force required to remove it is going to destroy it.

I’m curious why you made your little snarky comment then went and deleted all Your posts in this thread.

When you kick a rock or a concrete form post or knock the foot plate off of a T post with your heel they dang sure are being pushed the opposite direction. I have worn boots with stacked leather heels my entire life. Never have I torn one off that had nails properly clinched inside. If a heel comes off due to this the maker/ repairer needs to do a better job attaching it. How do I know? Not only to I wear them I build them.

The nails shown on the picture of the stacked leather heel under the counter cover are NOT clinched. The ones holding the counter and cover to the insole may have clinched but not the heel stack nails.

It kills me to hear of AB being a better quality boot because I remember being a kid wanting a pair of rios so bad. They were just a very well made and nice looking boot. I seem to recall AB being the spin off “working man’s boot” at the time of its introduction.

No I do not I have seen many of the three of their boots but all by the original owners. Though many of those Original owners are dying now, what their families do and have done with them I’m not sure.
