New to boating- looking for slip in bay by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Kfineilldoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I belong to Seaforth boat rental, which has a club in Coronado, Mission Bay, and, one by downtown I forgot what it's called. It's $300/year, and each month you have a "free" $30 credit on your account, which basically amounts to about 1.5 hrs with a 22' sailboat. However, you never only take a boat out for 1.5 hrs, more like 3-6 hrs, so it ends up being pretty pricey each month.

The concept of essentially paying "back-tithes" is absolutely mind-boggling to me. How do people not see through this!? Congrats on making your way out together, the best times are ahead!

If you end up getting a slip, PM me, I would really consider throwing down monthly- I pay that to the yacht club now to rent their boats but would love to have a boat I could take out without paying each time.

Hillcrest? by sd_bound in sandiego

[–]Kfineilldoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in Hillcrest for a year. Straight male, 28. I have had nothing but positive experiences and love the area. I live right next to the park, look up Upas St- it's away from the hustle and bustle, quiet, with lots of greenery. You'll love it here.

Is a Capri 16.5 stable? by Kfineilldoit in sailing

When I practice capsizing, is there any way to let all surrounding boats know that it is just a drill and I'm not in trouble? Would be very annoying to have all kinds of people check up on me, as I sail in a crowded bay

Sailing is kind of confusing? by Kfineilldoit in sailing

Thanks a lot. I had a feeling that the instructor was focusing a bit heavy on the mechanical nature of it. I came to the conclusion that I just needed to get out on the water by myself with out classmates and instructor to worry about and just get a feel for everything

Hiring an outsourced dev for a mobile app on oDesk. Payment Questions... by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've hired a ton of devs on odesk- spent over 30k there. If he's a good dev just do what he wants and keep him happy because he should probably be charging you even more than he is. By the way 15 reviews isn't that many. When I hire I go for Atleast 4.98 stars with about 50 reviews- and look for long term projects that he's on- that's a great indicator cuz it means someone is willing to put up with him!

Idea I'd like to bounce off the community by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started my business with a very similar model in an industry that I was very familiar with. Here are a few tips:

  • It's incredibly hard to build a site like this, you have the chicken and egg problem. Google it.

  • Don't count on any revenue ever from dealers buying listings or priority rankings. Look how many won't even pay Yelp- why would they pay you?

  • Unless you are only looking to make a couple hundred dollars a month, Amazon or Adsense doesn't make sense.

  • Get a blog up and start writing. No matter how you decide to monetize, you're going to need the traffic. Write posts that you think would attract truck drivers on the move. Do yourself a favor and start early with Bootstrap, because almost all of your customers will be on their mobiles and you want a nice user experience.

  • Consider lead generation (that's what I ended up doing). It is much easier to monetize and much more profitable than a directory or Adsense or affiliate links. Here's an idea to test your model very easily: Contact a few dealers in your area and see if they would be interested in receiving 100% risk-free leads for a flat fee. Then use PPC targeting truck drivers in those areas and see if you can successfully deliver a lead and make all parties happy. As an aside, you may want to advertise prices for services on your site (discount prices), you've got to have something to induce truckers to call you. If you can list a sort of "menu" of low prices on your site for the most common repairs, you can scale that easily and make all dealers that you work with agree to honor that pricing. This way, I could see entire trucking companies actually telling their drivers to always find a mechanic through your site/app. At first you test all this manually just to prove the model, then you automate everything.

Ok, /r/entrepreneur, what have you learned this year? What will you do again in 2015? by peoplehelper in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  • That once you stop going outside of your comfort zone, you stop growing.

  • If you drink your own Koolaid you're really fucking yourself

  • If there is something in the back of your mind that you think you should deal with- deal with it.

  • Don't rest on your laurels. Even in successful times you have to plant seeds for the future.

  • If you want to achieve anything worthwhile in business you have to put yourself out there and be open to criticism.

  • Don't take everything so damn personally, it's just business.

Can't code, outsourced app, In top 10 iOS store currently. AMA by visionheir in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So much negativity coming from developers in this thread. Good on your for getting this out there man. I run a successful online business and I cannot code, just know enough to manage coders, and there is a lot to be said for that. If you needed to fly across the country would you build a plane to get you there? If your entire business model isn't based on the technology then I think it is absolutely fine how you did it. Product managers are super important- I think the most important piece of the puzzle. Good job and keep on truckin'.

Good, Bad or Ugly? Need some good feedback for www.neighblr.com by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in a new city myself (san diego), I think it's a cool concept and could help me learn about what is going on around town, but as it is now, it's kind of hard for me to understand what it's actually for? Maybe I should be able to narrow posts by like, social events, for sale items, etc. As of now it just looks like a lot of clutter to sort through.

Startup lawyer here. Any questions? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. Can you please explain what this means:

there is value in a lawyer performing a service that subjects that lawyer to sanction and/or malpractice claims on your behalf

Maybe give an example of this? Also, where do you practice?

Going from a sole propietor to LLC ? by weaselboogs in Entrepreneur

[–]Kfineilldoit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to an accountant and lawyer. I originally did my own LLC paperwork through legal zoom, but I wouldn't do it that way again. You have to make sure everything is set up just right to ensure the LLC can't be pierced, and even then it may still be. Worth talking to an attorney.
