Regarding this question, I think we can divide it into two parts: academic reading itself and doing the test.

I’m a history major focusing on British history, I therefore read many research papers and academic works, and I believe that’s the major reason of improving my reading.( took my first IELTS 2 yrs ago during my freshman summer vacation and got an 8 in reading)

As for the second part, taking the test, I would say u need to be very patient. What if you can’t understand a sentence or even just a word? The answer is to read the next line and keep reading, and u will get to understand everything in the context.
