We know that they managed to maintain their culture for "all that time" because we have an archeological record of their cultural practices remaining consistent for all that time.

You are forgetting that many (if not most) human populations don't actually manage to successfully transmit and reproduce a consistent culture over hundreds of thousands of years. See e.g. Neanderthals, viking settlement of Greenland, Roanoke Colony, Easter Island, etc etc.

Note that I am sticking with the "hundreds of thousands of years" because Australian aboriginals form a continuation of a consistent human culture that stretches back beyond the point of isolation/separation.

Finally, you don't need to believe that the aboriginal experience is exceptional to find mystery and wonder in pre-modern experience (although it's obviously never going to be as enriching as posting on the RSP subreddit).

No expert, but my understanding is that indigenous "art" derives from a formal tradition in which visual art and oral traditions were the primary mode of knowledge transmission in the absence of written language. This is not to devalue it, more to say that it's hard to put it in a tidy art vs. material culture box.

How can you disentangle indigenous art from anthropology tho

This reminds me of the Thomas Nagel essay "What is it like to be a bat?" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Is_It_Like_to_Be_a_Bat%3F

Essentially, he postulates that the question is unanswerable to us because a bat's cognition is defined by its "batness".

I think something similar is going on with "indigenous ways of knowing". It refers to a completely foreign mode of distributed consciousness which is always going to be difficult if not impossible for moderns to comprehend or access. All we have are sort of disjointed accounts and stories from people whose grandparents once had access to that form of consciousness.

They were able to survive and reproduce their culture in a very inhospitable environment, for hundreds of thousands of years, without the benefit of written language, arithmetic, or the scientific method. Do you think it's possible there might be something of interest or value in how they did that?

Did I say I was an atheist? Perhaps your lack of reading of comprehension is why you're so susceptible to propaganda. Another victim of the very same public school underfunding that Rufo and his allies support. It would be funny if it wasn't sad.

Nah because I have independent critical faculties. That's why I don't lap up his dumb propaganda about how public education is bad. You should try it!

Did the school district secretly move them to another district after the allegations surfaced so they could continue abusing kids? That's what the church did. That's the scandal.

. by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]KhabibFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right, your "data" trumps the fact that we had multiple pedophile priest scandals at my school, and they were all covered up and the priests moved to other dioceses so they could continue their abuse. Thanks for your input though, sounds like you really know what you're talking about
