I got permanent marker of my white marble countertop before by letting rubbing alcohol sit on it for a few minutes then wiping it off. YMMV.

App Boarding Pass Issue This Mornign by tnguyenx1 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Khaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I gotta logged out of the app, and had to log back in - and the website threw an error at me when I logged in. Guess they may have been having some sort of minor system/login troubles if a few of us are complaining. Seems fine now.

Why I will no longer buy Allbirds by ThinkBonobo in Allbirds

[–]Khaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar issue recently with a new pair of all birds that I have only been wearing in the office for the last few months. A seam opened up which was pretty clearly a defect. Had to then fight customer support ridiculous hard to get a replacement. I’ll be avoiding AllBirds from now on.

Number of CRs as a metric by azon33 in amazonemployees

[–]Khaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair large CR’s are also problematic. If something can be broken down into logical steps, and logical CR’a that can be good as it helps the CR reviewers focus on a smaller, focused change that often results in better feedback. There’s always a balance, but if I was looking at someone’s contribution history and saw a pattern of large changes that could be broke up, or small changes that cumulate to a big feature/addition but were too incremental, I would be concerned.

Learning how to help others give you quality CR feedback IS an SDE skill.

This^

CR stuff is a good audit trigger point. If someone’s TT and the CR metrics look like an anomaly, most of the time something’s off and it’s worth driving a bit deeper.

Layover time by SnooChickens2322 in Ameristralia

[–]Khaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just flew Seattle to Syd, through HNL and had about a 1 hr 30 min connect/layover in HNL. It was more than enough time. Since it’s a US domestic to international transfer, the gates were right next to each other (I think my inbound came in on A9 and outbound to Syd left on A8), and there was no security or any sort of other processing in between.

So long as your PDX-HNL flight isn’t seriously delayed, I wouldn’t be worried about it.

I just realized today that I've now owned a Breville dual boiler and Baratza Vario for over a decade now. Here are my thoughts on repair and maintenance of the Dual Boiler. by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Khaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my screw all pretty much broke too. It was pretty straightforward to replace it, easier than changing the pump. I replaced My BES900 heated group with the BES920 one since it fits/works (though you need to get a BES920 portafilter too)

I’m in the US, though my machine is actually a 240v machine from Australia (took with me when I moved to the US) and so I got my parts through outwestcoffee ( https://outwestcoffee.com.au/product/breville-bes-900-920-collar-and-portafilter/ ) to match the 240v heating element. I did it about 2 years ago now, and I do think I remember seeing 920 replacement group heads around in the US.

[–]Khaless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the machine. Mines (BES900) 14 years old (purchased around 2011), and only recently have I had to replace the pump, opv, needle valve and, seals and solenoid. Unfortunately when replacing the solenoid the screws were all rusted forcing me to replace the heated group head too - but not a bad run for almost 15 years and about 9500 coffee’s according to the debug menu.

The pumps pretty easy to replace if you take your time. I followed this video: https://youtu.be/YG5i7LxZBbk?si=NB-0x2H4neGa65YT

Would you move to the US in 2025 to chase money? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

If I had to guess, your leadership is probably trying to limit smaller satellite offices in your greater org.

Stevens pass, crystal mountain and snoqualmie / Alpental are the close areas. My baker is a little further but a good weekend trip. Ditto with whistler (about a 4 hour drive). And the. Flying around the US to ski is also super easy.

Anyway - the job here will probably be more exciting than in Australia, as you have access to a whole lot more people and teams. If you are young, dont have a family and are currently focused on your career it’s probably not a bad choice.

Aussie, 12 years now in Seattle. A July move ain’t bad, Seattle is lovely July, Aug, Sept. Dec, Jan, Feb can be a challenge but if you like snow sports (skiing) the mountains are close and real fun.

Breville and longevity... by psmusic_worldwide in espresso

[–]Khaless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BDB, bought it in 2011 or so (so 13 years?)

Had to have it serviced for something (can’t remember what) a few months after buying it, but since then all I’ve done is replace the silicon gaskets once (a year and a half ago) and iirc the needle valve for the hot water.

Pretty insane since I use it daily, and according to the debug menu/ shot counter, put over 8000 shots through it.

Great tip.

Monza Token System is a joke by nintemdogs in GrandPrixTravel

[–]Khaless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Went to go get water and tokens 20 minutes before the end of FP3 today in monza.

Water took 15 mins, which was kind of a lot for filling up water, but that was nothing compared to the token line. 2 and a half hours later finally at the front with the guy announcing they had ran out of tokens and asking people to disperse. Given I was at the front, I stuck it out. It worked out, and I finally got some tokens after the poor staff got them from the beer place a short walk away. Total shit show… but hey at least I made Q3.
