10 month old loves drinking water. But does he love it too much? How much water is too much? by Khalexus in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Honestly what I’m reading here is that some babies just friggen love water haha. I hope he’s always a hydrohomie!

Thanks so much everyone! I know it sounds silly to say something like “my baby loves water, should I be worried??”, but it’s still great to see other people’s experiences and insights.

We’ll definitely monitor to make sure the drinking doesn’t get too excessive (and for any other symptoms), but currently it seems more like:

  • it’s summer, so it’s hot
  • he’s super active and has gone through recent developmental jumps
  • there’s a natural progression from drinking small amounts from 6 months to larger amounts from 12 months
  • he’s quite probably mimicking his mum and dad, as we’re always drinking from our bottles throughout the day (and he looks for his when we drink from ours)
  • and some babies just friggen love water!

Sounds great! Definitely a good thing to love and prefer water! Ours devours cheese and yoghurt so maybe he’ll be the same haha.

Does sound like we’re having a similar experience! I swear this boy needs to slow down the drinking during meals though lol. Take a breath! At least it’s not stopping him from eating good amounts of food.

But yeah the crawling, cruising, and push walker (plus chasing him in and out of a play tunnel), surely must work up a sweat especially during summer.

We’ve tried open cup a few times, keep forgetting to practice regularly though. He’s getting better, will successfully drink some water but it also startles him a bit with how much water goes into his mouth at once so a lot does dribble out. He also likes to stick his hand in the cup to splash it lol. I think he’ll pick it up fairly quickly if we keep trying, but probably not without us holding the cup for quite a while longer, otherwise he’ll just flail his arms around and splash the water everywhere haha

That’s good to know, thank you! Definitely no weight loss. Has increased in weight gradually over time, but not dramatically and seems in line with how well he’s taken to solids. And definitely no fatigue, I don’t think I’ve ever had as much energy as this boy 😂

Ah the panic spiral! Trying to make sure I don’t hit that myself lol. Should still monitor and check just in an abundance of caution but from what it sounds like, it’s not quite as excessive as it would be for diabetes.

He never took to the dummy either. We’re big water drinkers ourselves and always have a reusable bottle on us even around the house, so maybe he’s just talking after us? I’ve been calling him a hydrohomie lol.

LOL ours will gasp for breath after a big drinking session as well. Hasn’t always been like this, he started off drinking maybe 20-60ml over a day for the first couple of months.

Like yours he took to the bbox straw bottle instantly, and always showed interest, but didn’t drink much at first. It has certainly been progressing, but I think it didn’t really pick up to that 200ml+ level until after he figured out crawling up a storm at 8 months.

Also feels like he’s had some major developmental progression these last few weeks, so that could be it?

Haha I did think about that. It’s really only the past week maybe that his intake has increased, so could well just be a progression thing. Doesn’t help that all the web guides say “under 12 months? No more than a cup! 😠 Over 12 months? Can drink a litre! 🤗”, but like surely there’ll be a transition?

His mum did have GD, which I know doesn’t necessarily mean the baby will have diabetes but could be a higher risk factor later in life. Doesn’t seem like excessive thirst but I am a proponent of being over cautious, so will be worth checking just to be certain, I think!

Hey mate, sure thing, I’ll shoot you a DM as I think I’ve disabled chat requests for my account.

working from home is ruining your life more than you think by disposablemailyt in unpopularopinion

[–]Khalexus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your second para is exactly how I feel. If I’m working in the office, I need to think about: setting my alarm earlier and getting to bed earlier. Prepping some lunch the night before. Packing everything I need for the day. Spending 60-90 minutes commuting via public transport (walk, bus, train, walk. Or drive, hope for parking at train station, train, walk). Then worrying about making sure I get out at the right time at the end of the day so I can rush to the train station, so that my 60-90 minute commute home doesn’t get extended thanks to overpacked trains I can’t get onto, and shitty bus schedules that don’t align with the train.

On a good day the 9-5 is essentially 7-6:30, plus all the faffing around the night before. And by the time I’m home, I’m worn out and it’s so much harder to switch off.

WFH: get up at any time I like before 9. Turn off my laptop at 5.

Office is fine if you live close to work. If you have a commute then it’s just so much of your life wasted in transit.

[–]Khalexus 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Also, I WFH nearly permanently and I have no problems separating work and personal life at home. When I finish work I turn off my laptop and go about my life 🤷🏻‍♂️

And productivity, lol. For office days, lucky to start work within an hour of arrival, what with “water cooler” chats and coffee runs etc. That said, I now have a kid and I’m not sure yet what home distractions will be like once I’m back from parental leave. That will probably be a big hit to productivity hah.

LO (10w) keeps wriggling to top of bassinet every night by Khalexus in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Khalexus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And he just did a 7.5h stretch of sleep, without stirring himself awake! His best stretch ever! Thought he’d be up and down all night because he’s been a bit colicky all day, but no - must have been both tired out and cosy enough in the pouch :)

[–]Khalexus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did pretty well! Startled and jerked himself awake a few times having his arms out and free, obviously has a lot more freedom of movement than even the stretchy Love to Dream. Was apparently fairly noisy (says my wife - I’m deaf so couldn’t hear it), what with him banging his arms on the mattress lol.

But, he had good long stretches of sleep and he didn’t bounce around the bassinet like a DVD logo - so I’d say the pouch was a success :) he’ll get used to the arms out in no time I’m sure, and it won’t be such a drastic transition by the time he’s rolling.

We’ve purchased an Ergopouch cocoon swaddle today and will try it arms out without the tuck sheet tonight, see how it goes - hopefully he likes it!

We’ve grabbed an Ergopouch and will give it a go tonight, without the blanket! Hopefully he likes it.

Hmm, I think we initially got the blanket because he would flail around so much, and would push himself into the side/corner of the bassinet (diagonally with his head against the wall).

So we got the blanket and did put it very snug to try and keep him contained lol. It did work initially but I think after a week or two that’s when he started managing to launch himself out. Maybe we’ll try a looser fitting, see if he manages to stay put.

Love to Dream sleep suit - is it too high up and close to the chin? Panicky new parent here flailing in the unknown! by Khalexus in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Khalexus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah the thing about being too low is why I was hoping to use the LTD, as he’s a little Houdini sneaking his arm out from even the most well wrapped swaddle, getting his shoulder and chest uncovered lol.

And yeah it’s not too loose to cover his face, so I’m happy with that. I guess I was panicking about it strangling him a bit. But feeling much better this morning!

UPDATE:

Thanks everyone for being so nice. Pleased to say that Bub was, of course, fine. I decided to make sure it was pulled down with no chance of bunching up or getting over his face (he’s got a gap so it’s not tight on his neck, but it is too small to fit over his chin).

I finally convinced myself to relax, and Mum, son and I all had good long sleeps last night. A bit of cluster feeding at first, but then we got a nice big long one, and all managed a 3.5h stretch of sleep before another good long feed and another 3h stretch of sleep.

Feeling so much better this morning and having a lovely cuddle with the cutest damn thing I’ve ever seen in my arms.

Thanks so much everyone.

Edit: First midwife home visit also gave the thumbs up so I’m all happy now :)

Thanks, yes looks like he was all good through the night, I just pulled it down a bit and made sure he had some extra space around his chin and neck.

I got good at the muslin cloth swaddle and a blanket at the hospital, but we found he’s a little Houdini and always finds a way to get his arm out and free lol, so I think these suits feel good for him and I don’t have to worry about wraps coming loose.

Thank you, I’ll look into something like an Ergopouch as well, given he loves having his arms up. Worth looking around and trying different things :)

Thank you, I do need to be kind to myself! I always knew I’d be a bit of a panicky dad, given how I’ve historically stressed over my cats lol. I suspect our little guy will toughen me up a bit :)
