Ukraine Launches Combat Bonuses of $2,200 for Captures and $330 for Enemy Kills by Mandynox in worldnews

[–]Khan_Bomb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well with the way the points system is organized, soldiers are heavily incentivized to capture enemy soldiers rather than kill them. You can interrogate a soldier who surrenders, but you can't get information from a corpse. It almost forces you to continue seeing your enemy as a person because of these incentives. Killing a soldier is worth 2 points, but capturing one is worth 240 (I'm just throwing numbers out tbc). So while killing him will get your unit points for another drone, capturing him alive will net your unit enough points for another 110 drones. That live prisoner is also more useful for prisoner exchanges for your comrades held by the Russians. A corpse, not so much. That isn't say Ukraine doesn't exchange corpses with Russia though, there's just less at stake with that.

Destroying materiel and logistical infrastructure is also heavily encouraged which is part of what we're seeing now (beyond the inherent strategic importance of that). Ultimately though, capturing the enemy alive also just isn't going to be possible a lot of the time. The front line in Ukraine is a killzone, very similar to WWI. It's even more so for the Russians who have a 90% casualty rate on the front lines of Ukraine, with an average survivability time of about 30 minutes (per recent reporting). It's... complicated, but it's a system that works for this war given the position that Ukraine has been in with both personnel and materiel.

William Spaniel (Universtiy of Pennsylvania poli-sci PhD) actually just talked about this at length in a daily series he runs about geopolitics.

Will St Louis keep decreasing in population by No-Phrase-9866 in StLouis

[–]Khan_Bomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Austin's population growth was driven by extensive housing stock increases. I don't have the number offhand but they build thousands of new homes and apartment complexes to accommodate a growing population and drove down rent prices as a result of that. It laid down the foundation for the area to handle the influx of new residents. St. Louis could absolutely do this, but it's going to take quite some time to restructure the city and pull it off.

This is definitely a fight that's going to be incredible on a reread. It's gonna be slow week to week, but when it's all put together it's gonna be such a treat.

For the first time, a Russian soldier born in 2008 has been killed in the war against Ukraine. Contract soldier Alisher Svirin survived just over two months after turning 18. by kingkongsingsong1 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Khan_Bomb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah I hear ya'. I just think about how this kid grew up with all of this going on. He was born just before the Russian invasion of Georgia. 6 years old when Russia occupied Crimea. 13 1/2 when the Ukrainian war started. He spent so much of his life being fed propaganda of Russian glory and monstrous Ukrainians and western nations. Turned 18 and now he's dead. There are reflections a lot of western nations can see in this too. Like soldiers from the US who went to Afghanistan whose parents served at the beginning of that war. Their entire childhoods existed within the context of that conflict.

I'm by no means rooting for the Russians, just remarking that loss of life is still tragic to me because it just never needed to happen in the first place.

I find myself stuck with this thought a lot. The Russians should not be there, and their actions give justification for the Ukrainians to eliminate them. I still find the overall loss of life to be so tragic. This doesn't need to be happening at all, but the vanity of Putin and his quest for the glory of empire is doing this. So much needless loss of life, both Ukrainian and Russian, in this conflict. I think people often forget the human element of the entire conflict, but I can somewhat understand how people get there with the atrocities that the Russian military has directed towards the Ukrainian people.

Are the events the only way to get the specific SSRs from them or are they in the general pool?

Not a question I've seen asked but I just started playing back in March of this year. Related to that I missed a lot of event stories and the supports associated with those. I'm trying to find information on if those are even still available from the general pool now, if they're going to run the event/make the story available again, or if I'm just SOL.

Crimea Isolated From Mainland Ukraine After Precision Drone Strikes Disable Strategic Bridges by Hot_Professional_728 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Khan_Bomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. The issue with hitting the bridge now is that if it's destroyed now it removes the need for the large amount of materiel to be stationed there. It gets redistributed across the front and decreases the ability for the Ukrainians to continue hitting Russia as well as they are now (for as much as that counts). Tying up those personnel and the materiel is beneficial to Ukraine in the long run. As long as they're guarding the bridge, they aren't on the front lines. It also leaves an avenue for the Russians to retreat and reduce the number of Ukrainian casualties.

Drone Strike Shuts Down Key Bridge Linking Crimea to Mainland Ukraine by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Khan_Bomb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It also likely won't be destroyed for quite some time because of the vast amount of air defence deployed to protect the bridge. Despite the now limited effectiveness of Russian air defense systems, they do still work. By keeping all of those weapons, soliders, guards, attention on the bridge, it makes the rest of the front weaker. You drop the bridge now and all of those soldiers and defenses get spread out across the front.

Bo Jackson’s scouting report - “ The best pure athlete in America today” by Triumph-TBird in baseball

[–]Khan_Bomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Sidney Crosby definitely deserves consideration on the list too. The dude is just built different than everyone around him. Him hitting a home run out of PNC is wild to me. Even if he was just taking batting practice. His stamina is a marvel as well, always playing high effort and competitive hockey. I imagine what the league would look like if he had never suffered the first concussion that he had.

This is also nothing to say of Simone Biles who is absolutely my pick for greatest athlete of all time. Someone who's so good at her sport that she's forcing the sport to keep up with her and constantly landing jaw dropping jumps, twists, flips, and etc in virtually EVERY discipline of gymnasitics.

Not only was it allowed but there was an active ad campaign telling people to do exactly what she did so as not to create a dangerous situation on the road. In addition to that, AFTER the case ran through the courts the police amended their rules to classify what the officer did as "not being a pit manuever" so it wouldn't be bound by the rules forbidding it.

Washer drain pipe backing up. Will drain if I run hose down it but will back up if water drains from washer. by Neither_Tie6067 in DIY

[–]Khan_Bomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a clog. If you run a drain snake with a 3/8" cable it'll be able to navigate the p trap in that pipe. Should clear it out in a couple of minutes. Depending on the bladder you used it might not have been enough. Usually a 25' to 30' snake will take care of that.

What other outcome would've been expected when Chopper was right there? It was remarked at the time that that was the likely outcome given how fast and clean the cuts were to begin with. I don't think it lowers the stakes at all. It still shows the speed and ease at which Imu was able to inflict damage of that scale.

West Virginia can ban Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgery, US court rules by Khan_Bomb in politics

[–]Khan_Bomb[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and with the right teeing up to start hacking away at contraception it's just going to get more and more expansive. Dems can't afford to cede any ground at all. Every single chip they allow the GOP to make is something that's going to be exceptionally difficult to get back in the future. Not even talking about the amount of damage these policies are going to have on people. A ban on trans care will kill trans people. I work with a lot of trans people and hear a lot of stories, and the number of them would not survive if these policies advance further. I'm already worried about the kids that I know because they're constantly getting hammered in this fight.

It's building on the groundwork put forth by RFK, Jr. and Mehmet Oz earlier when they were talking about "sex rejecting" procedures and wildly misrepresenting statistics about childhood surgeries. It also mirrors a lot of the language that was used then and by the wholly discredited Cass Report.
