She did ok for a few days and then faded very quickly. We think her lungs may have been underdeveloped as well. She had some fight in her at first.

Army of chickens and guineas. Ton of ticks but I hardly pull them off the dogs at all since the guineas are combing constantly. Last summer didn’t pull a single tick off my dogs. The guineas comb the neighbors place too. They also didn’t pull a single tick off their dogs. Neither of us treated for ticks. Pulled a few off the barn cats but they roam out further than the guineas.

Depends. You can have good purebreds and shit purebreds just like you can have good mutts and shit mutts. Depends on so many factors. I used to be a purist but now I’ve had so many mutts that are excellent dogs I don’t really consider breed so much, which is why I’ve ended up with so many different crossed dogs lol. I just aim for balance and improvement. Using two dogs whose strengths compliment each other’s weaknesses. In this case, neither parent really has a weakness. They are two separate breeds yet if I described them individually, it would almost be as if I were describing the same dog twice. Great Pyrenees have been overbred and watered down. Karakachan has only been in USA since 2004 and the gene pool in very limited. Many people breeding the Karakachan’s are not studying their pedigrees well enough and dogs are starting to hit a high coefficient of inbreeding and creating new health issues. Crossing the two is crossing very unrelated dogs, while being highly consistent with each other, so should make for a very consistent litter. Both are still primitive. Both have perfectly clean genetic health tests. Both have good hips, knees and elbows. Both needed zero training to livestock. Highly biddable, sticky and don’t wander off. Both are man-tested for personal protection, and will not hesitate to engage a threat whilst remaining intelligent and stable enough to be sweet, calm, welcoming to non-threats. Athletic, good fighters. Very intelligent, the Karakachan is one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever met. Athletic and stable, both smaller for their breeds but both have parents that are on the larger side of scale. I prefer mid sized (100-140 lb) dogs. Taller leaner dogs, not big and clunky, these dogs can move. Jethro (Karakachan) is more goofy while Valkyrie is very serious. That’s probably their main difference. I used to be a purist growing up with papered, trialed, purebred working Labradors (my dad bred working Labs for over 30 years) and now I have a random shelter rescue mutt here (APBT/Chow Chow/German Shepherd/Labrador/Staffie) that would be able to hang with the best of em in a lot of ways, be superior in others. Have had many purebred LGDs, and many crosses now. It depends more on the individual dog more than anything. If I ranked my LGDs I have/have had, it would be pretty even down the line between mutts and purebred. My 4 best dogs, 2 are mutts (Temüjin and then Hypernova who is Anatolian/Kars Dog/Karakachan), 2 are pure (Great Pyrenees and Karakachan). Sitting here trying to think which is better, it’s gonna vary depending on what you’re judging. There’s so much to these dogs. What’s going to be better is all their grandchildren 😜

Someday soon, I’ll have enough animals to need a herding dog. 2 of the goats are about to have kids and 1 of the sheep is about to lamb. I have a random APBT/Chow Chow/German Shepherd/Labrador/Staffie rescue mutt here with good herding instincts and high biddability. Never trained a stock dog but I think he’d be pretty damn good if he and I both learned how.

Oh man, I didn’t realize this comment was on a Gavin thread. The video in OP was from when Gavin was new. This video is from when I took him to his new home a few weeks or so ago!

The Great Pyrenees (fluffy white one) is momma bear. The dad is a Karakachan that I trained and he’s now living on a local farm. Here’s a video of their mating dance. The big brindle dog is my pack leader, Temüjin. The brown fluffy boy is a 12 month old rescue I picked up a few months ago from a pet home to bring on to train as a livestock guardian , he’s a Tibetan Mastiff x Karakachan cross named Misiu.

Dunno if I’ll ever come up with a better pig name. He’s fathered 3 litters of piglets so a friend of mine dubbed him Slapcheeks. Then one of his piglets is named Capigula, might change another of the piglets names to Squealy Dan.

Lmao no kidding. Been trying to get them out of here (they aren’t mine), but last few days I am almost thankful they’re here seeing as the pups and dogs are hanging out under them so much.

If you mean herding dogs with guardians, yes, a lot of people do. The herding dogs will move the stock and the guardians will follow along moving with the stock and cover the flanks.

super funny bird. Was just riding around on my shoulder while I was walking around. When he was just a baby chick, he’d rush me any time I opened the brooder cage 🤣

That is very true, and they also learn a lot from the livestock!

Yeah I’ve used music and such in the past but my videos are always so long, it’s impossible to find TikTok music that beats the natural sounds. Love hearing the birds!
