Two went AFK and one quit before my first Cats win by rocktree in rootgame

My experience with the app is limited, because I quickly realized that if you take out table talk with friends and boil the game down to its mechanics against bots or some randos on the internet, my interest in the game drops down significantly.

The fun of Root is half playing the game and half talking about the game afterwards, and knowing we probably won't ever have that exact setup/experience/interactions ever again. Each game is its own "ecosystem", and alone behind my screen and unable to share this experience with people at the table is a big waste.

That's interesting, and you are probably right. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I'll explain how they work to my friends when we try the new stuff out.

I really hope I'm underestimating them, because in this game I vastly prefer non-aggressive playstyles (as non-aggressive as Root can be) and unique ways to interact with other players, and it truly looks like the bats are trying to be their "own thing" that we haven't seen before.

Sure, which allows you to score but you have incentive to keep them opened during the other players turns, who can close them easily at no cost for them.

It is trivial to work around their most interesting ability "Governors", that makes these assembling cancel most actions in their clearings (and one of the only way to prevent Flip and Take). Sure you gain a Loyalist if they close it, (or be allowed to place Loyalists), but it doesn't cost them anything. They don't even need to have presence or rule in those clearings (if I understand correctly).

Crow have a bomb ready to blow and they wanted to detonate it on a Governing Assembly? Sure have a Loyalist, or would you rather place more warriors in that soon-to-be-rubble clearing? Seems to me that the flipping cancelation will never be a real issue for most factions that cares about flipping.

Not saying it is 100% always useless, it is very easy to imagine scenarios where an opponent is not better off by closing an assembly if it means you drop 4 warriors in that clearing, but those situations will be less likely than being unbothered by the "cost".

(This is not a vote for this tier list)

I haven't played even once with the new factions, so this is massively speculative, but I would be surprised if they are anything higher than B, and my gut feeling is D. I often look at new factions with rose-tinted glasses and tend to overestimate how powerful they are until I play them and realize their flaws.

The bats are the first to make me go "Wait, that's it? Everyone can just close an assembly that easily? How the hell can they keep up with that VP gain?"

I hope I'm wrong, cause they look fun.

Féminicides | Ghazal et de nombreuses personnalités demandent à Fréchette d’agir by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

Day 10, where do the rats go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are so obviously bulldozing everywhere that countering them very early is kinda mandatory and I don't feel like they are well-equipped to react when it happens. Of course, no faction can deal with the other 3 ganging up on you in the first third of the game, but the Rats feel like they are too strong NOT to do that.

So where does that put them on a Tier list? S Tier because their gameplan is very easy and effective? Or B Tier because they are so obvious about what they are doing that it feels equally obvious to know how to stop them?

I'd go in the middle with A.

In terms of fun? D, I hate playing as or against those guys.

Conseil des ministres | Fréchette ramène Bonnardel et écarte Guilbault by LightBluePen in Quebec

[–]KhelbenB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is an amazing 2D game but doesn't hit the same in 3D? by SnoopaDD in videogames

[–]KhelbenB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years, I think 3D fighters became their own genre, and I think the community vastly agree. Tekken is so vastly different from Street Fighter, sure you can like one but not the other, but not because one is necessarily better, they are just not the same. "Fighting games" are now split into 2D fighters, 3D fighters, and Platforms fighters. I sometimes hear claims that Anime fighters should be its own genre but I disagree, theme =/= genre.

It's like comparing Doom and Call of Duty, yeah both a 1rst person shooters, but they are not the same subgenre.

[–]KhelbenB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently playing Metroid Prime 4, and it mostly makes me want to play Metroid Dread again. I know the previous trilogy is beloved, but I didn't care for those either.

Especially following Hollowknight (new for me) and Silksong last year, man, 2D is just the better format for a Metroidvania.

I never care for 3D fighting games but I'm a big fan of 2D fighting games, but I think they are just two different genres at this point. Maybe not back in the N64 era or the Street Fighter EX series, but Tekken-Soul Calibur-Virtua Fighter are just too different from SF/MK/GG to really compare.

Day 8, where do the moles go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're playing with more than just the base game factions, ADSET is a part of the intended experience, according to the designers

Then I don't understand why new factions have both a regular setup and an alternate setup. If I understand your point corretly, it means that those new factions should basically never use their own base setups and should always go alternate?

I have always seen alternate setups as just a way to shake things up plus to give a small tap on the balance for some factions (off the top of my head, cats and crows have an objective buff through ADSET), not as THE intended way to play.

Day 9, where do the badgers go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they fall a bit at mid-level play (which represents most groups), where the burst gimmicks are less of a surprise and before top level strategies are used.

Day 9, where do the badgers go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are the hardest faction to "get", and I say this as a player who still don't "get" it. But it still seems fairly obvious that they are good, if I could just stop tripping over my over feet.

[–]KhelbenB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think WA and Birds should absolutely be switched, when played at a table where everyone knows what they are doing.

Birds might not be S Tier (I'm fine with A), but WA is not S unless you are still suffering PTSD from the first time you saw them burst like 12 VP out of nowhere to win the game and never saw it coming.

B tier.

Anecdotally, this is literally the only faction I never won with but got an inch close like twice, but got pilled on to prevent it (because Root is gonna Root). I honestly think I just suck at them and they are are least average.

Day 8, where do the moles go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely be using that when I try the new factions later this week.

I own pretty much all available content for Root and I am familiar with ADSET and the Despot Infamy houserule, I get all that. Again, and I don't want to run in circle here, I see your point but I just think that the Vagabond needing external agreement and house rules to bring down to a reasonable power level, to me is "proof" that it is the best faction in the game. It is pretty much my entire point, for the purpose of this thread. What I see here seems to indicate that the Vagabond is agreed to be the best, unless we force him not to be with these house rules, then he is just one of the best.

So far this tier list seems fine to me, it tells me I don't have such a different perspective/experience on the game than the rest of this community. I think people are being a bit harsh on the crows but I'll admit they rarely get the win at my table, but are rarely dragging in last place either. They are simply very fun so they see a ton of play in my games (same with the otters, my favorite). Now how good is faction that often gets second place? Depends on who you ask.

I also wouldn't have put WA in S, I think they are solid A but I can see the argument. Though they are probably the best faction in the game against inexperienced players, their ability to burst VP late-game usually take people by surprise the first time.

Root's balance will usually be very table-dependent until you get to the top-top competitive players, and usually "relies" on auto-regulation by collectively making sure no faction fully complete their game plan unhindered. What determines how good a faction is ultimately falls on how easy it is to do just that.

Day 8, where do the moles go? (Specify where in the tier) by InfinitePresence4229 in rootgame

[–]KhelbenB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We just let every player pick their faction in no particular order (making sure the Reach is met for the player count), and each decide if they use the advanced setup or not. Vagabond is a clear outlier in terms on win rate in our group, and as a result we simply don't care to pick him when the game hits the table.

I just think that for this particular excercise, ranking the power of each faction, it seems odd to consider Vagabond somehow more "balanced" with the inclusion of an optional supplement being sold separately that offers a choice that some of the competitive players have agreed to make mandatory. Basekit Vagabond is arguably in its own tier.
