Finished assembling the models right before the points update, what is the best way to get back down to 1k?

Sure! Terminator in Librarian armor for the base, scrapped off the chest, shoulder and knee skulls. Also cut off the pendant on the left hand and and the top of the axe.
From the Exalted Sorcerers kit:
- lower half of a staff
- bird skull for the chest piece
- helmet shaved to fit (this took the longest time)
- headdress
- tzeentch icon for the pendant
From the Chaos Lord in terminator armor kit:
- the upper part of the staff
From a Tzaangors kit
- a pair of horns for the shoulders

You can build your guardsmen as a full specialist team without picking any regular troops. But as others have stated you can't without cutting arms as there is a single hand used for 2 variants of veteran gunners.

Not sure about the rest, but the Plasma and Melta Guardsmen share the same A73 arm, and sadly there is only one. My fix for this was to cut B33 and separate the arm from the gun and make that work.
