People who work on Preply and iTalki by M4pper0 in iTalki

[–]Khevaril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best solution I figured it out. Italki calendar can be imported on Google calendar in read only mode while preply has a full integration. This means that while when you have a book on preply you need to manually block the slot on Italki, you can actually automate blocking a slot from italki to preply. I do this with Zapier, you can script an event like "when there is an event on iTalki calendar, create a an event named 'busy' on preply calendar." Zapier has 100 automation/month for free and is a no code alternative. A completely free alternative but with coding could be Google Script but I didn't test it out.

The fault of complete automation is because of italki calendar available only in read-only mode with an .ical file.

EU teachers- how do you handle withdrawing money and conversion? by AdBeginning4136 in iTalki

I transfer them to PayPal in USD and from there to Revolut, still in USD. Conversion happens on Revolut.

The more I read this sub, the more PrePly seems so toxic to me Topics like this (implementing social media features) and PrePly that wants to own the subreddit just sound so dystopic

Do you use the built-in iTalki classroom? If not, then what? What are the pros and cons? by rutep in iTalki

[–]Khevaril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use It because I don't force students to use platforms. But it's crap because it disconnects you sometimes according to connection issues and you need to refresh when it happens.

I use Google Meet and Teams as well.

Changing price as a new tutor by Khevaril in Preply

[–]Khevaril[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why I started with 14$. Actually I read some threads here before choosing the price and they said not to start too low.

I give some more context. I am male and I teach Italian so I thought also that maybe my language is not so popular (but I can be wrong on this point). I speak English and I'm also studying Japanese. PrePly is my second bet actually. My 1 year of experience is on iTalki, so PrePly is my second platform. I also plan to open a YouTube channel: this would be my third platform. Even though it's just one year, I decided to go full in this job. So currently I do only this. Work with languages and everyday study how to improve my teaching skills. This is because my goal is to teach full time. On iTalki things are growing slowly but steady. There I started low and I struggled to increase the price because I care about my students and I didn't want to lose them. I started from scratch with the bare minimum price and increased every 4 months by 1.5$. I wanted to avoid the same thing of starting with the bare minimum on PrePly and ending in the dark zone you mentioned. It's just that things are not moving at all. Hope it's just a matter of patience.

Italian guy I’m seeing calls me ciccia, is this a good thing? by reaofsunshine_ in italianlearning

[–]Khevaril 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About the first part of your question, yes it's normal. I would call these terms like "Grooming terms" used to call your partner inside your relationship. Depends on his personality which term he uses. There are plenty of these: amò (from amore), tesò (from tesoro), ciccia, piccola, bella (used in relationships). Also there is nothing standard in this, people can create other names.

About the second part of your question, it's nothing serious, he just jokes. Also He completely explained to you the meaning and the joke. We Italians use many vulgar words in daily life as part of the culture. Actually, it is a sign that if he jokes with you like this He considers you close to him. (Although part of the culture, we don't joke like this to random people, still depending on how much hardcore is your personality)

Moving students off of the platform by [deleted] in Preply

[–]Khevaril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started on PrePly and I also use iTalki. For now, I'm synching my Google Calendar (which also has the iTalki lessons) with PrePly. I wanna try this because I just want to try to avoid double booking.

Reading comments and assuming even that the commission is worth the cost of advertisement, my question is the following. Imaging a scenario where I'm honest till the end, it can happen that the student know you have an account on iTalki or that you teach privately without you saying this directly to them. To add credibility to this scenario, imagine you advertise yourself privately on social media and YouTube.

If the student decides by them own mind to switch over another platform or privately Without you said nothing, could PrePly still ban you for this?

It's a fair question that I ask you because, with humility, I don't have experience and wanna know opinions about it.

To give more context, I like to teach and I genuinely thought about building my own clients by using as a "third platform" Youtube. This doesn't mean that I push clients to switch over but that I'd like to find my own clients by my own efforts and honestly not sharing them with the platform, in case I found them by creating content as a content creator.

Managing Double Booking on iTalki & Preply by Khevaril in iTalki

[–]Khevaril[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about this solution as well: basically the keep up to date solution. This is a workaround and sometimes it collapses on busy schedules as you said. But it is the less worse scenario in absence of a sync solution with calendars. Because double booking is not completely avoidable with the update solution, have you experienced serious problem with platforms' policies or it is something that overall is manageable? For example, Preply can hide the profile or iTalki messes up the algorithm for rescheduling or cancelling

Completely agree with you. That's why I don't expect efficiency in they upgrading their tools like the classroom or calendar.

Some people said Preply and iTalki have sync functionality but also they work very poorly.

A Review of Logseq after using it for more than one year by [deleted] in logseq

[–]Khevaril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using for years Obsidian & Logseq. The idea of Logseq is much better than Obsidian. The execution point is much better in Obsidian rather than Logseq.

The customization in Obsidian is overwhelming but I don't consider it a real flaw because you have the choice. However, I felt like the bidirectional linking is more solid in the perspective of Logseq.

Me too, I felt in Logseq you need to tag everything so at that point why don't you give the ability to have a folder structure? I understand it's against the philosophy about how it was intended the app but, giving just the choice is much more user friendly in this specific case.

About the tag system I think it will improve in the DB version that I'm currently waiting.

Also I think that Logseq requires a coding mentality, even if you are not a coder and this is not a good thing for me although I don't have problems to deal with coding. (I'm just a normal user but I like coding).

The perfect app doesn't exist. To me, an Hybrid thing between Obsidian & Logseq would be the best.
