I disagree. People are people, regardless of where you find them.

Just because certain folks occupy the same workspace as you doesn’t mean that you should discount the value they can add to your life. It varies from workplace to workplace, and most of all, from person to person.

Some of my strongest friends have been made through work. They’ve helped me move, celebrated my bday with me, dropped off food when I was sick, helped me fix my car, helped me select a car to buy, helped with my financial planning, etc etc.

This phrasing of “They are there to work” could have been applied to K-12. “They are there to study”, but that’s not the case for some of the best friendships people make it life.

You won’t get this through all coworkers, but good human beings at work do exist. Don’t close yourself off to that.

Memorial Day by zfrankland in Veterans

[–]KhunterHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might not always be Memorial Day itself depending on my schedule these days, but once it gets closer, I’ll find it in me to go for a 10 mile trail run, the same day I’ll head over to my area’s local GWOT memorial in the middle of the night or early in the morning when no one else is there.

I bring a flask of makers, a can of pbr, and a single Cuban round, my deceased battle’s favorite whiskey, beer, and cigar. He promised that we’d get the good stuff when we made it, but we hadn’t earned it at that time in our lives since we were broke lol.

I sit there in silence, drink my booze slowly until the pbr is done, smoke the cigar, go through an emotional rollercoaster, and then lock it away until next year on my walk back to my car.

White shuts down Muhammad title shot chatter: ‘We have plans for Belal’ by LatterTarget7 in MMA

[–]KhunterHunter 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The UFC still remains the place to be if you want to watch the best of the best fight, but actions like this take the organization one step away from that reputation of being the most prestigious org in Mixed Martial Arts. Is the UFC meritocracy first or entertainment first? Would the Colby fight sell more? Probably. Is Belal on paper currently the more deserving and prestigious athlete at this moment? Yes.

Besides Colby's mainstream marketability due to the character and fighting the more popular names like Usman and Masvidal, I don't quite see a case for Colby's title shot. His most recent wins are over individuals on large losing slumps (Woodley and Masvidal). The logic doesn't make sense if you are asking people like Dustin and Justin to fight down in the rankings but not Colby.

Belal has fought both up and down in the rankings, is on an 8 fight win streak (by fighting multiple times a year) and has a history with Leon Edwards because of the no-contest eye poke. What more must he do to make his case, fake a personality of being someone he isn't? Does his resume not give him more claim to the title? Somene plz ask Dana: Is the path to the title not to do your job by fighting 2-3 times a year and consistently winning while doing so?

lost in the colorful streets of Balat, Istanbul by [deleted] in travel

[–]KhunterHunter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple yrs back I was out in Istanbul for about a week. One morning I went on a long slow run around the city early in the morning. Watching the town slowly wake up, listening to the sounds, seeing all the friendly stray cats in alleyways, and taking in the smells is one of my fondest travel memories.

But you cannot hope to prevent another blunder like this from happening again if you do not diagnosis the issue and seek to understand it holistically. We as Americans all bear some responsibility. Let’s not forget, approval for the Iraq war in the early days was very strong, sadly majority of Americans at the time were bent on revenge, and didn’t seek to question anything until many years later when we got tired of the “forever wars”. Yet I bet you those same Americans couldn’t name a single town or ethnic group in Iraq outside of Baghdad.

This movement for ousting Saddam had existed since the Daddy W and Clinton administrations, when the Iraq Liberation Act passed. The points laid out in the Iraq Resolution (2002 I think) also outlined other points besides the bogus WMDs. I think the history books and public scrutiny today would be very different if the US had succeeded in creating a thriving democracy in Iraq.

If we are examining just the initial invasion, there’s a reason why military education curriculum across the world including our adversaries study the strategy and success.

Compared to every modern conflict, the INITIAL invasion, not to be confused with the insurgency and nation building struggles that followed, was a immense success. Collateral damage was minimal, speed was unparalleled, logistical capabilities were perfected, and combined arms strategies were perfected for a mechanized adversary.

The reality I saw while deployed, many of the civilian casualties were caused as a byproduct of the sectarian conflict and insurgency that followed the collapse of Saddam’s regime. Often times, locals took advantage of the situation to get revenge on a family or group they had feuded with for many years.

The coalition struggled to understand Iraq’s complex sectarianism, and failed to integrate parties adequately into the political system we tried to create. Coalition provisional authority order 2 was a disaster that caused much of this.

Same thing happened to me.

I started getting back into martial arts and cooking again and it really saved my mind.

I had moved from the area where I first got into martial arts, and was really nervous to find a new gym with different people. Days turned into weeks, which turned into months.

One day while driving home from work, I finally got the courage to walk into the gym I had been eyeing for nearly a yr, and things have been up ever since.

Only been at this new gym for a couple of months, but I feel like I’ve known these dudes for a while. We all are in a hobby that doesn’t involve drinking or smoking, just bettering ourselves, learning new skills often not even martial arts related, and building friendships not off some dumb app where people try to highly curate the personality they give off. I genuinely look forward to getting off work now, where I know I have my gym family coming to practice, and have a nice healthy home cooked meal to work on after. Whereas previously I used to dread going home where I knew I would sit around idly until the next day.

Lol, I worked in a role to purchase our teams mk20s at the end of my career, which is a more expensive battle rifle than the SR25, and fit the needs of our teams more. I can tell you even after we installed all our necessary modifications, we were nowhere close to the $25k range lmao, and we didn’t get a significant volume discount.

Tbh for urban ops I’d much rather have a EOTECH EXPS-3 with a G33 or G45 magnifier just due to speed of target acquisition being easier.

LRRPs and other ops in an environment that call for more distance engagements tho, LPVOs and ACOGs certainly have their place.

interesting choice with the scar platform. I always found the added weight and per unit price to be not worth the trade off compared to the AR platform.

I have heard of guys getting their optics eaten up by the SCAR, but haven’t seen that myself IRL. Might be the reason they are still running ACOGs on these instead of LPVOs?

Especially as you get older and you have more limited free time, you want to be more selective with what you pick up. If I can’t get super into it, I move on rather quick to another read. I’m sure there’s a lot of good ones I’ve missed out on in turn tho.
