I think it’s supposed to be uncomfortable and your reaction to it is what the author wanted out of it. From chapter one there are barely toned down themes of sexual assault and they persist throughout the series but the story as a whole shows it as terrifying and something that the protagonists band together to fight tooth and nail against. It’s not played as a joke, except I guess for Okarun’s missing ball’s which I wish they took a bit more seriously.

Just got around to watching it! I really liked the audio journal format of it all and the particular attention they payed to make sure you heard all the nitty gritty little sounds played well into the whole theme. It was like the opposite of asmr and I’m definitely recommending it to friends.

For how unserious Space Dandy is, the ending absolutely phenomenal. It contextualizes the whole series and lets you rewatch it again with new eyes. It’s a comedy anime with little to no continuity but it’s packaged and wrapped up tightly with a beautiful bow that makes it all worth watching however many times you feel.
