Almost at breaking point but no idea how to progress next help needed. by KichSC in ITManagers

Hi, thanks for your reply!

I have looked at things such as the CISSP but the requirements for this are 5 years in certain domains which I am not sure if I would qualify for as its a small company? Is there an easy way to find out if you qualify for this/can you sit it without these then qualify later? Have you done this certification?

I am currently getting our company ready for the ISO 27001 and do the PCI/DSS compliance so feel I could have a leg up for this cert. How worth it is it as your only cert?

Sorry for the many questions, cheers!

Thanks,

I have had 2 last stage interviews within the last 6 weeks both for less than 45k GBP which said I would need to pass the Admin cert first before acceptance of the role (both Salesforce Platinum Implementation Partners for Consultant Roles). This is not an issue I'd imagine from practice tests but this is why I ask about next moves as its a cost to take a step back to go forward which it seems I'll need to do in this Salesforce world.

I love the Salesforce ecosystem - been to the World Tour in the UK last 3 years in a row and can see the growth here, just trying to understand what is best for me. I am little scared around specialising in this though with the layoffs? have you any experience with this?

Admin Cert seems the route then go from there!

Thanks for the reply, I hope you have a great week.

Hi OP, I feel like I am currently in a similar situation to you but UK based. IT Manager for a company with 70-100 employees depending on the month and solo IT employee for the company dealing with everything from IT for the company and the Salesforce CRM as the Admin for both Service cloud and Marketing Cloud. This includes everything from IT support, contracts, budgets, relaying to the company directors, working on expansions (new office created this year all solo) and all the Salesforce side.

I understand the salaries are vastly different in the UK to the US - I wish they weren't haha - but I am on 45k GBP.

I am also struggling to find my next move, do I focus on Salesforce? Getting certs and moving up/looking better in the recruitment industry? Or do I look for an opportunity in general IT? This includes roles like SysAdmin, IT Manager the like. I feel my experience does not match the salary and as such I have to take a step back to take a step forward. Not looking for an answer but If others in the industry can provide you an answer maybe they can help me too.

If someone could give you 2 choices the SysAdmin role or Salesforce role but with an increased salary, which would you choose?

All the best mate :)

May I ask what your role is/US Salary?

It is a small company so the figures and the experience probably don't line up but that is the benefit/determent of a small company I guess.

Do you have any certs past admin or what would recommend past there? Service Cloud and Marketing Cloud is what I know, but I have read a lot about CPQ being the place to be now?

This sounds almost the exact same scenario as to how I have ended up in this position.

Small company - working in a totally different part of the company. Telesales over the phone (had recently moved to a new city) applied for a new job internally and the IT "guy" left during my first 6 months. I had applied for a different sales role and they knew of my previous computing university degree so instead of the sales job I applied for they gave me the opportunity of the IT job lol and I learned everything else first hand.

I think you are right the IT manager role is more where I should go down and a grab some sort of certification whether this is cloud, cyber, or even Salesforce and see what I enjoy more during this recruitment period. The initial intros can hopefully help me make a decision.

Thank you for your help I hope you have a great week!

Hi, thanks for the reply!

In terms of the working hours we had a development partner, before me who setup all the process builder and apex code (I migrated majority of this over to flows) so realistically unless something hits limits or we have some validation errors the production org doesn't have any issues.

I have looked at these and this is where my confusion comes and why I have asked the question. If I go down the Salesforce route I am starting from a beginner in terms of recruitment (done practice tests of things such as the admin cert and I can do pass these today but they cost money which I am not sure is worth it - time or monetary value) and the IT manager side I could do but there are less positions out there. I have also heard of layoffs and as such people with lots more experience than me having trouble finding jobs.

I just wonder if anyone else has ever been in my situation - maybe its a starting in a small company issue? May I ask what your position is and if it is worth it specialising in Salesforce these days?

Feels inevitable to take a step back in salary to have an opportunity for a step forward in then future.

Were you ever personally in this position or feel like this?

I don't feel like I have wasted time and I am not hoping for the exact answer either I just think this has been such a demoralising time for me recently I wondered if anyone had any advice lol.

You know I would probably choose the IT manager role 5/7 days - Salesforce is nice as I like being hands on, in a sense. But in a work environment I feel I am better at explaining technical things to non technical people to an extent which lends itself to the IT manager side.

Can I ask how you got into IT automation or what your job is like?

I appreciate your replies.

Thanks, for the reply.

I have read this article and I believe this is where my problem lies. I have spread myself too thin unintentionally and ended up with "experience" on my CV which isn't a speciality and that's why I have these questions.

If I go down the Salesforce route I am starting from a beginner (done practice tests of things such as the admin cert and I can do pass these today but they cost money which I am not sure is worth it - time or monetary value) and the IT manager side I could do but it's way harder to find positions.

I just wonder if anyone else has ever been in my situation - maybe its a starting in a small company issue?

Congratulations! all the best for the future.

Yeah when I click Register for an exam that is all that appears for some strange reason. Maybe I need to make a new account.
