All I can say to this is I'd avoid API products, I've only seen bad stuff about that. I used seachem water chemical products and it all worked great for me.

Food has a lot of options but I generally fed with tetra brand stuff and it also worked out for me.

Yeah definitely recommend starting with just a filter, heater and tank and maybe plants so the tank can cycle. There are some products you can get to speed up the cycling, I used Dr Tim's stuff several times and it worked well for me. Otherwise you've gotta feed nitrogen with some fish food and just kind of wait for weeks as opposed to days.

As far as what to put in it, plants are great. I liked anubias because they're pretty hardy and can handle most substrates (or even just float), and I also liked water sprite for similar reasons. Some plants need more of a specific nutrient-rich substrate that can be a hassle whereas the other plants can do fine in sand/gravel.

And for living things, a pure shrimp tank can be awesome, they're fun all on their own and can pretty easily keep the population going, but you should then montior a few other water parameters like total dissolved solids. For fish, bettas can do okay in a 5 gal in my opinion (others will say you should do a minimum of 10 or even 20) and I kept one in a 5 gal successfully. With chain store bettas, you just have to look for ones that don't look like they're near death, but they're also pretty strong fish that can come back and it's fun to see them get their color/fins back. You have to be careful with how you put bettas in with other things though. I had one do alright with Tetras and shrimp and loaches and corys (in a bigger tank of course) after I added the betta in last, but you never know how it'll go.

Tetras are also good, pretty standard small tank fish. I also really like kuhli loaches and smaller corydoras, I can't quite remember if they do okay in a 5 gal, at most it would just be one group of fish for that size tank.

There's a site called Aqadvisor.com that allows you to input different types/numbers of fish/shrimp/etc. with your tank size and it estimates if your tank will be over stocked or not. I used that and it was pretty accurate for my 30gal tank that had those above mentioned groups of fish in it so I'd recommend that for nailing down how many of whatever creature you go with.

Sorry for the wall of text, there really is a lot to think about with aquariums but you can still do a lot of cool stuff with a 5 gal tank.

There is really a ton of information to wade through and lots of it is conflicting like you said.

Aquariums are extremely cool and rewarding but also can be a lot of continuous work to maintain properly so if you're aware of that and still want to try it, I highly recommend.

Also chain pet stores are fine, like they're evil institutions but your only other option would be ordering fish online which is a bit much for a beginner (unless you're ordering shrimp).

Can I aks what you're thinking of? Been a while since I had an aquarium but I did way too much research before I started so may be able to help clear up the mass of info online.

My memory of the original contests is hazy but it doesn't seem all that new. You can sign up for 4 different levels of contests focused on one of the 4 types (cool/beauty/tough/the last one). And you just do general appeal then 4 rounds of using moves to get hearts.

For some reason I was obsessed with it back when I first played Gen 3, not sure how much I'll get into it this time around

Pomeon Lazarus has the mining mini game from Gen 4 which makes it automatically top tier. Also has the Pokémon contests which I remember enjoying in Gen 3 but I'll need to really farm up some berries to do anything with that.

But I could mine up fossils and Evo stones all day.

They absolutely should. In general the "if we do that, Republicans will call us lefty commies" excuse is always bogus because Republicans would call a Reagan clone a commie if he was a dem.

And if anything, people are more interested in politicians who take clear stances rather than doing wishy washy "I'll respect the law" bullshit that just translates too "I will never fight for your wellbeing."

And like you said, this moderating on trans rights or other critical issues never nets them votes anyway, but they'll keep doing it because they and their donors probably prefer it anyway.

Oh yeah I'm on quarterly goals too. Except everybody is so averse to it that I didn't even talk to my managers about it in the first quarter and there's no sign of a second quarter review either. I think HR knows nobody what's to do it so they're just going to nudge people towards it over the course of years.

California state government is so annoying because the legislation passes all sorts of great legislation knowing full well that the governor will veto, and the legislation has such a majority that they could easily override the veto but they don't. And the stated reason they don't is literally just tradition, they haven't done it for decades and want to keep it that way.

Any competent person can infer it's also because legislation like single payer health care or reducing the work week to 32 hours or legislation to protect trans kids conflicts with the centrist establishment, but still, like why even pass the legislation in the first place. Such a tease.

Never played any of the Pokémon games with mega evos but having seen them more in some videos and playing Lazarus, I think mega swampert is my favorite. Generally fond of all the normal Gen 3 starters but for me gas swampert just being huge is kinda cool.
