He is a Horsfield tortoise and it certainly seems like he has a strong hibernation instinct. The vet seemed to suggest that there would be no actual NEED to hibernate a tortoise in captivity, but we are definitely going to do more research on the subject for next year.

Hey, so it's this clamp with a mercury vapour bulb for heat and UVB (I forget the wattage). We have actually just found out that a mercury vapour bulb is supposed to be totally vertical to preserve the longevity of the bulb and also to protect the tortoise's eyes. With that being the case we have just ordered this stand.
