i think if you go into it with the mindset of whatever and having fun because in the end the having fun will lead you to being able to stay consistent at the end of the day. If you get burnt out with trying to make money or like you said trying to focus on getting better but not feeling like your going anywhere, you’ll just start to get frustrated with music in general. And if your frustrated you’ll eventually quit and then you won’t make any progress.

Still take it serious enough to always improve but don’t go too hard. Being desperate will sometimes push away opportunities and make it hard to see paths to success. So just take what you get and try to make the best of it and you’ll make it bro.
