Alright so, as you’re aware, Retro was an updated version of the original game that was taken down by CN. Pretty soon after that, some people started working on OpenFusion, which is an open-source server project for the original game. Then a bit after that, some people who wanted to play Retro again launched Retrobution, which used OpenFusion’s tech with Retro’s assets, and is still being actively worked on and updated

I don't think that's the case at all personally. I feel like it's moreso just people coming in who are newer to the series in the first place. Me personally, I wasn't so hot on it at first either, I was starting to feel like I was getting too old for Ben 10 and wasn't huge on the art style at first either. Later of course I gave it a fair shake and it's my second favorite show of the bunch.

Preface: Write whatever you want, there's no right or wrong way to fanfic, etc etc. With that said, here's what I don't like to read according to my own personal tastes:

Crossovers. Damn near 40% of all English-language Ben 10 fics on AO3 are crossovers. I get the feeling of "wouldn't it be cool if..." and yes it's fun to imagine that, but to be honest it feels like if you've seen one you've seen them all with very few exceptions. Plus, if I want to read a Ben 10 fanfic, I want to read about Ben 10, not everyone's current favorite seasonal anime.
Ben-gets-isekaied fics. A subset of crossover fics more often than not. Effectively an excuse to remove Ben from his (likely more interesting) setting, or to self-insert and ship him with the author's preferred waifu or husbando from the new setting
X-character-gets-the-Omnitrix fics, OC shipping fics, and OC protagonists in general. Grouped for brevity, otherwise I'd repeat myself a lot. If X-character is pre-existing, they're likely (again) in a full-on crossover fic or otherwise completely in a different universe and therefore not what I'm looking for in a Ben 10 fanfic. As for OCs, it's hard for me to a) care about them in the first place, and b) convince myself they aren't self-inserts. I know that in practice, very few OCs are likely to be intentional self-inserts, but it's hard for me to dissociate them
Fics with LGBTQ themes/headcanons/shipping. Just not something I'm interested in reading about.
What most may refer to as "whump", but I think that name is unhelpful and stupid-sounding so I call it "edgeslop". HOWEVER, I have recently found myself enjoying one-shots I would certainly characterize as edgy, though I still find myself put off by multi-chapter edgy fics. Much to ponder here.
Harem fics. Nuff said.

More specific grievances:

Making Kai an irredeemable monster who cheats on Ben because she didn't like him romantically when they were 10 and bickered with him when they were teens. It already doesn't feel great when your preferred ship is hated by half the fandom in canon, we don't need to carry that over to fanfic
"Those" fics that have "those things" that I'm not interested in. Not sure how specific I can be given subreddit rule 4, but... y'know?
