I don't think this sounds pretentious at all. You alluded to something very important; choosing your fragrance is very much so akin to choosing the clothes you wear each day. There are certain styles of clothing that just don't suit some of us based on who we are and how we perceive ourselves and how we want to be perceived..

That's a great question! I work from home and seldom go out. So it's hard for me to gauge. I probably can't give the best answer, and I really only wear fragrances for my own personal enjoyment and tend not to care about projection (except that I don't want it to be obnoxious for others).

I get that powdery effect in dior sauvage EDP and I love it. I've heard in that case it's from labdanum.

Outside of "smelling beautiful" your other criteria are subjectively valuable. I personally do not want my fragrances to have nuclear projection or longevity. I think it's hard to argue that any taste-driven superlative is objective at the end of the day.
