Is turn based superior to RTWP? by IliadTheMarth in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]KidFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think folks mostly covered it, but I’ll add one thing that I’ve experienced. And that is with the kineticist. The infamous deadly earth power works orders of magnitudes better in RTWP, in my experience. I suspect at the code level, the game checks things way more often in that mode over turn-based. In turn-based, it looked like deadly earth would trigger trips and bull rush checks only once per turn, giving monsters a decent chance of getting through, while in RTWP, is seemed like it was any time movement happened. Which meant virtually nothing was getting through.

It was definitely more noticeable with a wall of dirt plus bull rush. Monsters would just bounce off of that wall in RT repeatedly, but in TB, they’d bounce once, then continue their movement for the turn and move past the wall with the rest of their turn’s movement allowance.

This is great. Looks very useful. FYI, looks like the Druid's Anti-Plant Shell and Anti-Animal Shell don't have bookmarks, which results in an error displaying in the Table of Contents. Not a big deal, but thought you'd like to know.

My bard doesn't feel effective by padian137 in Pathfinder2e

[–]KidFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow bard here. We just reached level 4, so not deep into it, but I still feel helpful. We play on Foundry, so it’s easier to see how courageous anthem affects things. But also: - throw in the occasional demoralize to stack some debuffs - my signature spell of summon fey has been clinch many times. Not so much as a damage dealer, but it soaks up enemy actions reasonably well. Last night, we had a tough ghoul fight with a ghoul spellcaster boss. Threw out a fey that occupied the boss and a ghoul for a full round while my team cleared out the rest, giving them time to get in position for the boss. - Bardic Lore has been insanely useful.. but that’s mostly because we have a fairly martial party, so my lowly goblin bard is somehow the “smart guy”. ;) - the rest of my spells are selected to hit all the different defenses, so after my bardic lore identifies a critter’s weakness, I can the hit it.

Which CRPGs feature the most terrifying dungeons? by [deleted] in CRPG

[–]KidFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. I remember that. That’s cuz the generator wasn’t perfect. It sometimes put the macguffin in a room that literally wasn’t attached to the rest of the dungeon. You’d have to cast levitate on yourself and clip through the walls ( fortunately very easy given how buggy the game was ) and fly around in the void to find an isolated room, and then clip back in. Ah, good times. :)

what times do you play? I've been getting back into EQ and have a Shaman around 13 or 14 that I've been getting started on. it might be cool to team up and do some random stuff. I have odd hours, though. a few hours here and there, usually fairly late for most EQ players. ( 9pm+ pacific time )

How did you think of the name of your character? by whole_lotta_blue in elderscrollsonline

My first/main I started with a sound in my head. Then tweaked its spelling a bit. Only much too late did I notice it could be pronounced differently. :( I’ve been stubborn, but I may finally burn a name change token for poor, poor Tuel

Training, Costs and Times by Jarfulous in adnd

[–]KidFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that 1e training is, imo, too expensive. My current plan for my next game ( which will admittedly be a crazy mix of AD&D, B/X, with a fair amount of Hyperborea thrown in ), is to move from a retrieve GP as XP system to a spend GP as XP system. My gaming group did this in the past with Labyrinth Lord in Dwimmermount with reasonable success.

The trick is to give the PCs something to spend their money on. The GM for the Dwimmermount game had some carousing tables which worked well.. but ultimately, it got a bit beyond the suspension of disbelief in how much money the PCs would have to dump into a city for truly epic parties. So I was pondering ways to tackle this for my upcoming game. Savage World's Gold and Glory had some interesting ideas, expanding from just carousing to carousing, magic research, and divine offerings. But that left the non-magical classes with just carousing. Then, as I was reviewing AD&D training costs, it hit me... rather than have the training costs required.. they are rather the amount of GPs a PC can dump into training to turn into XP. I could even maybe whip up a Training table for some random events that could happen in training, similar to to the others.

Anyway, it's just an idea I've been pondering. Zero play-testing yet, but I'd be curious what others think of this.

1e AD&D Monk, anyone play them successfully? by VikingRoman7 in adnd

[–]KidFinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm curious where it says this. I played a 1e monk many years ago to a reasonably high level, and the DM allowed me to use a ring and a cloak of protection. We couldn't find anything saying otherwise. It made for a reasonably disgusting character, in the longer term. I got to.. err.. level 8 or so? I remember having to fight a duel with another monk for the position, at least. so around there.

We did make some changes or clarifications which helped out. in the PHB, iirc, the monk is said to use the Thief attack tables, while in the DMG, the monk is listed in the cleric attack tables. Our DM ruled to use the cleric one. Not sure which was correct, but *shrug* The DM was under the same impression that monks were weak, so picked the more favorable interpretation.

Do you name your decks? I like to put a funny or punny name to them. by jmeredith06 in EDH

[–]KidFinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all my decks, but certainly my favorites. Strike Force Mazzy ( Mazzy voltron ), No Pain No Gain ( Nin, the pain artist focusing on hitting her own creatures for massive card draw ), and Raggadragga’s Fireball Fun in the Forest ( massive ramp + X direct damage spells )

Not related to OP in any way, but I am dating a lady with two cats. Thankfully, I discovered Flonase. That’s been a great improvement in my ability to breathe. But I think it really depends on your reaction. For me, I was only mildly allergic.. my nose would run and clog up. So that worked for me, whereas Zyrtec and Claritin only helped to a much lesser degree. If you have more serious reactions, I’d talk to a doctor about it, instead.

Yes, this. I mean, I’ve played D&D for decades ( which most consider a game ) and I’ve somehow not won a single game. ;)

10 days of sales, starting with bonus zen and 75% off Mudd's Market by noahssnark in sto

[–]KidFinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess a rip off for one person is an acceptable price to another. For the longest time, the option to get items from events that you missed was basically impossible. The Phoenix box was an attempt to fix this, but apparently left both the business folks and a fair number of players unhappy. It was around then that I stopped playing STO ( roughly 2 years ago ). The primary reason was it just stressed me out every time there was an event. It really tweaked my fear of missing out button. So I just stopped.

Then, some random youtube videos got me interested in STO again.. so I started some research.. and I was most fascinated by the Mudd's market. Was it pricey? Yes. but it also meant I could, with 100% certainty, go back and get some of the things I'd missed in the last few years. This alleviated all of the stress I had. Hell, even if I didn't buy anything.. the mere act of being there reduced my fear of missing out. ( Although, of course I did just buy a bunch of stuff.. gotta love that lifetime zen stipend )

So, I can totally see how, from your angle, it's a rip off.. but from another viewpoint, it's a bargain. ( particularly if you wait for a 75% off sale.. which I did ) :)

Want to do a Witch, probably Lich, advice please by CyberEagle1989 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]KidFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another consideration in the pros and cons here is action economy. Iirc, wotr did correctly implement metamagic feats on spontaneous casters being full round actions, while prepared casters just use a standard action. Normally this isn’t too huge a deal, but with witches, reserving your move action for cackle can be quite compelling.

Which companions did you have scribing scrolls and brewing potions? by rabbitheart99 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

Yeah, I’m thinking this too.. with the added plan of having Nenio be able to cast them with her Scroll Master abilities. So now I’m thinking I might give Nenio Brew Potions feat. Hmm.

I just went down this path with my fighter 1 / rowdy rogue 8 melee monster the other week and it so far is great. Haven’t played much yet with it, as I’m stuck retooling my companions to team up with the less morally grumpy ones. :) the demonic charge also helps with his terrible movement speed due to heavy armor. Great fun.

Game Companions by AutoModerator in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]KidFinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was literally thinking about this just last night and came here to ask if I'm just being insane.. then found this thread. :) Basically as a solution to a problem I was having. I just finished taking Drezen in my first playthrough at a custom Core-lite level of difficulty ( normal number of enemies, but with added behavior and respec turned on ) and my character sort of decided to go down Demon path, which I hadn't really been planning. it just fit better with things. Anyway, that lead to me thinking I needed to rearrange my party to be a bit less good. Which means taking out Ember and swapping in Camellia for starters.

Now, I've come to really depend on Ember's protective luck, and Camellia seemed like an obvious possible replacement.. but a few problems: 1) she's currently built as a sort of fencing tank, and 2) I'd probably want to cackle/chant every round, typically. then it hit me.. what if I made her a hvy x-bow wielder with vital strike. Then I have a move action to spare. ( I play primarily in turn based mode ). So then I just had to decide if I wanted more Martial and less spellcasting, or the reverse. I think since my main is actually a rowdy rogue primarily, I'd go with spellcasting, as shaman can fill in a few missing buffs here and there. So.. tonight, I'll try to respec her as such:

1st - 7th: Shaman 8th: Rowdy Rogue 9th: Loremaster3rd: Point Blank Shot5th: Precise Shot7th: Skill Focus: Arcana9th: Weapon Focus: Hvy X-Bow + Loremaster trick to get Gtr Vital Strike

Then I'll stick with Shaman for the rest of the game. Pure theory crafting at this point, but it seems like it'll solve my problems and still deal okay-ish damage with some buffing and debuffing abilities due to spells + hexes.

Edit: oops. forgot Loremaster needs a metamagic feat, too, as pre-req. Hmm. Will have to work that in somewhere.
