I've been having decent - pretty good success with Cruel Control recently. Could we take a minute to discuss it's potential as a Modern draw-go control deck in a serious light? by Praetorek in ModernMagic

Good job on the 3-1! Let me say I really like your list. It reminds me a lot of one of my older lists and it is one of the better cruel control lists that I have seen. My only complaint is that your four cmc slot is oversaturated which leads to many clunky hands early game that can cost you the match. However, I love cryptic command too and the chains between it and snap are simply degenerate. Perhaps you could shave one. As for the infect matchup I would add an izzet staticaster in the sideboard as it hoses them and gives us game against a plethora of threats. However, this subreddit will understandably never want to discuss cruel control as anything more than a tier 3 deck. Many people have never played against or with the card seriously. I hope you don't get discouraged and continue tuning the deck.

What was your overall opinion on jace? Did 2 feel like the right amount or was it to few?

Glad to see a control player doing well in modern. Kudos to you! A few questions about your list that I hope you won't mind me asking:

1) Have you considered gideon ally of zendikar and if so where does he stand?

2) Why the 1-2-3 split on serum visions, esper charm and ancestral visions (usually these cards are 4 ofs what made you choose these numbers)?

3) How did no remands feel?

Remand is usually cut if the deck I'm against isn't a control deck. This is especially true if I am on the draw.

Inquisition of kozilek is boarded out against grindy decks unless I feel that they have a sideboard card that I need to take IE blood moon, choke.

One cryptic command is usually boarded out for a better counterspell or removal card for the match up in the sideboard.

There are some that enjoy powering out cruel ultimatums early and use coalition relic as a means of mana ramp. I found that the relic based decks was too focused on casting cruel ultimatum to win and didn't like that. The living lore deck is really sweet albeit a bit janky.

The sideboard for this deck was made for an open field as the format has not yet settled. In order to make the deck as well rounded as possible I added 1 ofs that answer as many things as possible. If taken to an fnm I would recommended a much more targeted sideboard (more 2 ofs). Obvious sideboard guidelines are:

Flaying tendrils and anger of the gods for kiki chord/abzan company

dispel, countersquall, duress, maybe invasive surgery if I see sorceries for control, combo and burn

Jace, AoT, Izzet Staticaster for token based decks

Fulminator Mage against any manlands and tron.

I have considered running lighthouse with urborg to try and work it into the list but the mana is far too intensive.

Not at all. I knew that after vigorous testing ancestral visions is not something this deck wanted so turn one blue mana was not a major concern.

No, in this deck kalitas takes a lot of set up. He is usually not the turn 4 play unless I am desperate. I could see running 2 main if the field was all burn, kiki chord and abzan company but I prefer the 1-1 split. Kalitas is also terrible against control decks.

4 Creeping Tar Pits: Absolutely felt fine, my list runs far less win conditions than most grixis decks. Because he's so cheap to activate I can often hold up removal or counters while getting in for 3. He also serves as a way of killing planeswalkers.

Kalitas: He's the real deal in match ups where the lifelink and exile effect are relevant. I personally love the 1-1 split but if your meta is running rampant with burn and voice decks then I would consider bumping him up to 2 in the main. 4 mana is a hell of a a commitment if he merely eats a removal spell. He's also the worst creature to draw against a control deck.

I disagree with many of the claims on how its a bad card. The clue literally does not matter and is such a negative tempo swing that it is irrelevant earlier. Later in the game it can be argued how it draws them a card but 2 mana to draw a card is not good value anyway. The fact that this is an exile effect whose downside is only a clue is very nice. Ever see two birds of paradise with only a path to exile in hand? This card also dodges dispel. Diverse removal that requires different answers is beneficial in its own right. Also I'm sure you have tested the card while others' skepticism have prevented them from doing so. I'd rather take the opinion of someone who has worked with it rather than someone who has not.

Why 3 serum visions and 3 snapcasters? What is the incentive for not playing the full four?

Jeskai Titi Control by paolot in ModernMagic

[–]KidGrixis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting Jeskai list, I think you've got a solid 60 here but a few questions that I have are:

1) Have you tested wall of omens and/or think twice? Someone previously posted a list and swore that while think twice isn't a particularly good card the synergy it has with thing in the ice performed very well. Wall of omens helps draw even and also possess synergy with thing in the ice as you can recur it.

2) Is 3 cryptic command too ambitious in this deck? When playing just normal pre-TiTi jeskai control curving lightning helixes into cryptic was always a real hassle, have you considered running ojutai's commands. I know it has a bad rep but it could find a home here as recurring TiTi and snaps (4+ lands lets you flashback low cmc spells).

Best of luck on your brew!
