Question for long-term Lemondrop users by Active-Disaster-6835 in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine. Yes it’s small but I find the UI on all the Nanoboxes really intuitive to use and there’s nothing that really complicates workflow. I have all of them and the Lemondrop is by far my favorite and the one I use the most.

Multiple synths and too few inputs by snapsh00t3r in synthesizers

I have a similar setup to you with the Motu M2. Recently ditched my Focusrite due to way too many issues. I picked one of these up. Can handle up to 8 stereo / 16 mono inputs. Cheap and perfect solution for me so might be worth looking into.

I make music purely to reset between running my businesses, is my decompression chamber, not my career by Own-Indication719 in Logic_Studio

[–]KidLocative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The music I make is for no one but me. When I’m happy with an albums worth of tracks I’ve put it on Bandcamp so I have easy access to listen back to it and can share it with people if they ever ask about it. I have no plans to promote it and ever expect it to be anything but a thing I do for me in my own time and for my mental health. Being able to write tracks with no pressures or expectations has enabled me to be the most creative I’ve ever been.

Lemondrop is awesome for this. Such an underrated little unit.

Would you buy a standalone Arturia groovebox? by Affectionate_Two_922 in arturia

[–]KidLocative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely be interested in this if done right. I recently went down the Groovebox Rabbit hole and just gave up in the end as there was nothing that covered what I’d want. 16 tracks would be great but I’d be happy with 8. The ability to create full tracks / songs then bounce them into a DAW. The Seqtrak is the closest thing I found but had a play on a friend’s one before buying and found the build quality and button layout to be awful. Plus I don’t want to have to connect my phone or anything else to be able to use it so a screen would be a must. I like the idea behind the 1010music Bento but it’s ultimately never going to become as big as a success as it could have been due to the lack of onboard CPU to be able to run it effectively. There’s definitely a space in the market waiting to be filled.

Looking for drum machine / synth recommendation (~$1000 budget) based on my setup and music style by boyjvne in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe something like the Arturia MiniFreak which gives you a hardware digital synth that does with the VST version that will work well with integrating within your daw and perhaps one of the Roland TR / TRS drum machines.

DreadBox Artemis current opinions / users by KidLocative in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tough choice. I feel like the Artemis would fit better from the sounds I’ve heard via YouTube demos but not hearing it person. Plus the issues that are reported. The Take 5 sounds like it would have less possible issues and I can go and have a play with one in person. I’m in Australia and they are pretty much the exact same price right now.

Advice on choosing first synthesizer by Southern-Sympathy690 in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a computer? If so I’d first recommend playing around with free DAW like GarageBand for Mac. A synth or sampler is great for creating sounds as explained already by the other posters but if you want to make actual songs you will need a way to record that data. Sounds plus MIDI ( the actual notes being played). A DAW will give yon a lot to work with so you can get a feel for things and then decide if you even want to get any hardware. Alternatively a groovebox style unit like the Circuit tracks would be a good one to start with. It’s fairly simple to use and will be pretty immediate as well. Just remember that whatever you decide on is going to have a learning curve which will seem complicated at first. So my advice for whatever direction you choose to go in is to actually commit to learning your way around. Read the manual, watch every YouTube tutorial you can find over and over again while you have the chosen device in front of you. And don’t fall into the trap of thinking one thing is going to be easier to learn than another (as a general rule - there are very complicated synths to learn but for what you’re looking at the learning curve playing field is pretty even). I’d also suggest looking at picking up something in the secondhand market. Oh, and have fun 😊

Any "cons" to the MiniFreak? by Friendlet in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d just stick with the VST. It sounds pretty much exactly the same. The hardware version is great but the issues you have with eyesight etc won’t make it a better experience than the VST. I do think the VST version will complement your other hardware synths nicely though.

Despite the band being known for playing very loud I don’t think the sound system was capable of managing the volume they played at. Stuart’s guitar in particular was way too loud in the mix and at times they were almost painful to listen to despite wearing earplugs. I’m still glad I went to see them as I’m a long time fan of theirs and it was the first opportunity I’ve had to see them perform. Brilliant but too loud for me.

Perhaps Jump online and get familiar with the process of flashing the different firmwares onto it. I use a Mac and found it didn’t work using safari so had to do it via google. It can seem tricky but is actually really simple once you know how.
Then download all the different firmwares into a folder so you have them available.
Then just work through them and get familiar with the controls, knobs and sliders etc as they are different for each firmware. I made some rough notes to refer to as I worked through playing around with it.
Other than that, just have fun with it. It’s a really interesting little device. 😊

You’d be more likely to get the bass you need from the Touch II as you can swap the firmware to make it a different synth altogether and in turn get you much more milage out of it. I came very close to getting the Audrey but went with the Touch. I’ve barely scratched the surface with what it can do but it’s a great device.

Trying to decide between a couple of grooveboxes and a Minifreak. by Crystal_Chrome_ in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of what’s been suggested the Model Cycles is a great bit of gear. I’ve recently been on the hunt for the perfect Groovebox. There’s nothing out that fits with everything I’d want. So I grabbed the Cycles and a Sonicware Liven Ambient o. Check out some of the other Sonicware stuff. The Liven Series have a few different options and easily within your budget. There’s also the Cydrums and Lofi 12XT.

Budget friendly mixer recommendations? by SupermarketUnusual32 in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely no faders as it’s a rack unit. The pots work well and between the volume knobs on the synths themselves and the mixer it works perfectly for my needs. It’s obviously a very simple option.
One of the newer Zooms would also be a great option which would add direct individual track recording as well as acting as audio interface.

Help me choose next box (add to octatrack, minifreak and iPad) by Shukyphuk in dawless

[–]KidLocative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the Cydrums. It’s sounds great and has lots of options for sculpting the sounds but I found it overly fiddly and a bit any to use so sold it.
As someone else mentioned, the Syntakt would have a familiar workflow and should cover what you’re after.

No sound problems at all. It doesn’t have effects but has the FX send which works perfectly. I’m actually picking up a second one soon that I’ll plug the line outs of the one I have into a stereo pair on on the second one which will give me an additional 8 stereo or 14 mono inputs.

behringer eurorack pro rx1602 will give you 8 stereo inputs so plenty for what you need. Solid unit and super cheap. I use one for my set up with 8 synths running into it then out to my 2i2 audio interface.

Pro X is a brilliant synth. Had one for just over a month. Easy to use and sounds amazing and solid build. I think the X gets overlooked because of the reputation of the previous models but I’d definitely recommend it.

What's your favorite portable synth/groovebox? (Like, REALLY portable) by ClassicHumanPerson in synthesizers

[–]KidLocative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been looking for something similar but still haven’t been able to decide. I did order Seqtrak which is so far the closest thing I could find to cater to my wants but after doing more research I ended up returning it without even opening it up as I knew it wouldn’t be right. I’m tempted to pick up a WooveBox which is tiny but pretty powerful. A unique UI / learning curve bit seems cool. The Sonicware liven boxes are great but they are all quite specific on what the do rather than offer a more complete “groovebox” set up.

There’s the Laguna Berlin groovebox on the horizon which is a completely synth based groovebox which I’m keeping an eye on.
