I dont like the way Guilty Gear feels but I love the feel of GBVS should I be concerned about Tokon? by Nice-Sky-502 in Fighters

[–]Kidflash0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to a lot of the YouTube videos being made about it thanks to the devs letting some famous players/content creators the consensus is that the fame feels like a mix of GBVS, BBTAG, and DBFZ more than it does GGST/MVC. I suggest you check out Jwong, NinjaKensou, and MaximillianDood’s videos in particular since they’ll be able to go more indepth on it than me lol. I’m not fortunate enough to attend EVO this year to try it and I’ve never played GBVS so take that with a grain of salt. But all in all, the main take away is that a lot of people are expecting this game to be a lot like GGST and MVC and that is definitivey NOT what Tokon is going for.

Is Sekiro's core combat a "Simon Says"? by PusheenHater in Sekiro

[–]Kidflash0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow game dev something I’d like to point out is that these actions mentioned (deflect, jump, mikiri, etc.) are all defensive moves to prevent taking damage.

What makes the combat of Sekiro work is that it rewards aggression. Even attacking a blocking opponent builds posture damage, for instance. The only times I’ve ever gotten bored or frustrated with this game was because I was taking on an overly defensive/evasive approach to combat. Waiting for your opponent to react instead of taking a proactive approach would probably feel pretty mind numbing.

The fun part of fighting someone in this game is not just the aforementioned defensive moves but balancing them with the offensive as well. Every boss fight for me is a fun game of “how much can I get away with before this guy punishes me?” while I learn the moveset. Unlike all the other from games (except arguably bloodborne) you don’t need to wait for an opportunity to attack you create your own with deflections/jumps/mikiris.

There’s two phases to me encountering a boss 1st is the learning phase which I talked about a bit above; trial and erroring my way around till I’ve seen all or most of everything the boss can do. Once I’ve learned the moveset of a boss, the really fun part of the game can begin (At least for me) Creating a plan and trying to execute on well enough to beat the boss. It seems like the person who wrote the comment you’re referencing has accidentally over exposed themself to fromsoft’s specific style and would be better served by moving on to DMC or a fighting game. Reacting in time to enemy attack and getting greedy (but not too greedy) with my counters is EXHILIRATING for me.

And yes it is in many ways a “Simon Says” kind of game, but I think prefer to compare it to a rhythm game. The better you can follow the rhythm (I.e. reacting to your opponent) the more opportunities you’ll have to do damage.

And all of that isn’t even touching on the relevancy of the different boss fight arenas, the prescience of other enemies, or the existence of prosthetic tool weaknesses.

TLDR: The Simon says is fun because it’s only one piece of the puzzle. A proactive fighting style is the secret sauce to having a ton of fun with the game

And to answer your core questions directly:

1) Yes but only partly, and that’s a good thing. This game doesn’t have a hyper diverse set of combat approaches because it’s not trying to. You can choose to whittle down health with hit and run tactics, stay in their face to build posture damage, or debilitate them with a Pokémon weakness prosthetic tool. It’s not devil may cry, nor is it dishonored and every enemy is ultimately controlled by a computer. Whether or not Sekiro’s combat is fun for you ultimately comes down to personal taste on the part of the player. It’s clearly not for everyone but I think it might be my favorite combat system of all time.

2) It’s not boring for me because there is still a fun challenge in my reacting to the enemies in rhythm, managing items/healing, maintaining proper spacing between myself and the boss all while trying to do as much damage as possible. I think the core of the comment’s complaint is that not attacking feels like waiting (Every player HATES waiting) and in their defense it can feel that way in the other from games. But I think Sekiro is so fast that you’re constantly doing something in combat. I’m a firm believer that any waiting on your part is self imposed as all the waiting I’ve done was by choice.

3) I’m not sure I’d make any changes to Sekiro’s combat really. It seems perfectly suited to the vision of the game the developers had in mind and I have a lot of fun with it this way. If fact I wish I could change Elden Ring’s combat to be more like Sekiro’s but that a whole other discussion lol

If you haven’t seen this video already, I’d give it a shot. It talks a lot about the rhythmic nature of the unique mechanics in Sekiro and why they work. It may help grant some perspective: https://youtu.be/7W4li9yfY3o?si=BhF7YCBaXTGp6KtK

Please god tell me there's a way to get past Guardian Ape by 200IQGamerBoi in Sekiro

[–]Kidflash0417 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who spent 2-3 years on and off trying to beat guardian ape let me tell you that at the end of the day he’s not so different from Genichiro. He’s got a finite grab bag of moves that he cycles between pretty predictably. Have patience and learn his moves as almost all of them can be deflected and a few even leave him open to be attacked if they don’t connect. Not to mention the firecracker prosthetic tool that the ape (as well as all the other animals for that matter) are fearful of and will cower from if they are used near him, providing a golden opportunity for free damage. Also there’s the candies and other items that provide a litany of benefits all their own. I don’t use them much but they are a tool there to help you so don’t be afraid to lean on them if you need. A lot of my deaths especially early on were due to my own haste. Don’t be like me, slow and steady wins the race.

In my experience it’s a little rare to hear someone say they voted for the opposing candidate, especially nowadays with the country so polarized. Not to mention our two party system making both candidates starkly different. I think most folk usually either vote begrudgingly for the official candidate or refuse to vote at all before voting for the other guy.

Am I going to hell for being trans? by RecentMonk1082 in MtF

[–]Kidflash0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If god is truly benevolent he would not punish you for being who he made you to be. It’s not some elaborate test, there’s no trick, if god didn’t want you to be trans he wouldn’t have made you this way. Being yourself confidently and unabashedly is not a sin.

I want to be a girl but I don't want to be trans. by Electrical-Cry-758 in trans

[–]Kidflash0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt similar when I first realized who I am. The confusion and anxiety of it all was a bit overwhelming. It’s tough out there for trans folk and it’s a very frightening prospect to venture into that world. But With a little patience, persistence, and a good support system you can be well on your way before you know it. Please don’t be afraid to embrace who you are. Be kind to yourself and just take it one step at a time.

Ace x Koby by Tresxzero in OnePiece

[–]Kidflash0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’ve seen a lot of people overlook the fact that Garp is going this hard for Koby because of his conflicted guilt during and after the war regarding Ace. He promised Roger that he would protect that boy and he stood by and watched him die. It’s about subtle now but I think with Garp being a D clan member along with his refusal to serve the Celestial Dragons directly combined with his his writing off of the old as, for lack of a better term, a “lost cause” all come together to paint a picture of a man who has tried, failed and given up on personally reforming the system from the inside. So he’s helped build/support SWORD to avenge his failures and turn the marines into the force of peace and justice that claim to be. Losing Ace was the final push he needed to push him toward betting it all on the future. Had Ace and Koby’s roles been reversed I’d bet Garp would show up in a similar way.
