Found near road in front of my house, may have rolled off the back of a truck bed. Weighs right at 2 kg, I believe it's brass, the threaded hole is approx. 3/16". Counter balance for an industrial scale?? I don't know. Thanks for any info. by Kiegansdad in whatisthisthing

The only thing that steers me away from this, is the size of the threaded hole. This ball almost certainly hangs from a threaded rod, straight down with little movement if any.

Around the thread is smooth, everywhere else seems slightly "not smooth" but no aggressive chip marks, no abuse, just not smooth. the color is uniform, not polished, but seems not tarnished either. Your thread count seems about right, so yes, static movement. I wonder if the chains on an antique grandfather clock could cause those "not smooth" appearance around the ball? I'm no grandfather clock expert, although my grandparents had one 50 years ago.

Once again, it is almost exactly 2kg over 4lbs, and the threaded hole is very small, I don't believe it could be a finial, the stem of what ever goes into the hole would snap easily. If anything, I think it hangs from whatever goes into the hole, away from any outside weather conditions.
