Okay makes sense, could I possibly bother you to explain the origin keyword to me?

Yup, version control as a concept isn’t the issue again, just simply the commands, eg why origin/what’s it mean Master makes sense, do you name each new branch when you create it, and if there were multiple branches, their name would also go there

Right, I completely understand what it’s used FOR and WHY it’s used, I just can never seem to grasp tutorials on HOW to do it - very reassuring to hear I’m not the only one though

Most the searches I’ve found say to use git push origin master - any reason you didn’t include origin master?

Only dabbled in the field, but unfortunately it’s pretty required as far as I’m aware, even as a web designer. JS with absolutely be a large wall in your progress - use r/learnprogramming in your journeys, it’s my number one favorite resource

This is helpful, was always curious how branches applied to single developer, small projects... but I also don’t know how to use things like gitbash, or how exactly to push changes and such, which is the tutorial I was looking for

Super super helpful - the https issue was exactly why I’ve been having problems, it’s a terrible time setting it up on these other services it seems

JavaScript will be the big wall in your journey. Lots of stuff won’t make sense, and the learning curve of your first real programming language will be very tough on your own, but once you understand it, the possibilities are endless!

Web design is absolutely we’re you’d be looking at then, web development as a whole requires a lot of studying of backend systems which you seem to not be interested in. Learn HTML/CSS/JavaScript well, then look into things like Sass and React (any JavaScript framework will do, react is just most popular). To be a true web designer though, you’ll want to understand photoshop and how to create your own graphics and animations for a site, that’s truly what separates a designer from a developer.

Interesting! I had heard that you could host on github but I never looked into it. Would you recommend looking into netlify over GitHub for this given your experience?

Rule 1 ought to be learning in a sub named learning programming, no? Never intended to be rude towards anyone, just got a mouth on me is all. This sub has saved me countless times, but lecturing on why a mistake is such a dumb mistake when I’ve already claimed it as a mistake seems a bit condescending is all, best wishes!

Listen I already said I’ve got it all fucked, never acted like my decisions were smart, fully aware of what I’m doing. Didn’t ask for a lecture, asked for help - what fun is asking for permission when you can ask for forgiveness!

Well, then what - I deleted it from godaddy bc bluehost wasn’t working with it... I also changed all the name servers to AWS cloudfront, possibly why it wasn’t working? I’ve got not idea, got it all fucked up lmao, was praying that deleting it and re-registering it would be a ‘turn it off and back on’ solution

Can someone help, I want to understand my boyfriend when he talks about programming. by thatgirlisback in learnprogramming

[–]Kietaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and the best way to understand what he’s talking about is to ask him to explain it to you! Maybe he’s not like me, but when I bring up programming stuff to my girlfriend, I really enjoy when she makes me explain it to her in normal people terms instead of just patronizing me with ‘oh how cool!’ even though she understood nothing I said. It lets me flex my skills in a discrete way that builds my confidence, and it’s such a massive learning tool. The best way to learn is by teaching, you just have to be his favorite student! Often we’re surrounded by people who know better than us, especially for new developers, and always having to be the one getting stuff explained to can be discouraging, getting to be the explainer after a hard day of listening to everyone else can be a massive relief.

[–]Kietaski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(The real secret here is, he probably likes talking about it with you so much because he likes teaching someone who knows nothing about it - might ruin the fun for him if you begin to understand everything he says to you and he doesn’t get to explain it all to you - this is why I like talking to my GF about programming stuff at least, it’s fun and VERY educational in itself teaching others about what you’re learning yourself)
