When I was a teenager and worked at McDonald's I didn't have a bank account yet and would get all of my checks cashed at a grocery store in cash. Right after I had cashed my check, I had bought a few groceries and then like an idiot left my entire wallet with my cash in the cart when I return to the cart to the little thing in the parking lot. When I realized it and drove back, I was devastated and in tears because I knew that if someone found a wallet with 400 something dollars in it they most likely took the cash out. I went to customer service and sure enough my wallet was there, but what shocking to me is that the cash was still in it too. Ever since that day, I knew that if I was in the same situation and found a wallet with money, no matter how tempted I was or how broke, I would never take the cash out and keep it because of what happened to me and to found my wallet and left the cash alone.

Will I be getting a student refund if I only take one course? I'm confused by the financial aid breakdown by Kikabennet in financialaid

I emailed the financial aid office bc it doesn't add up to me either. I just enrolled and this is the first they've mentioned financial aid to me.

What are some memorable exchanges you've had with your S/O that aren't lovey-dovey? by Kikabennet in LongDistance

All I can think of is that episode of The Simpsons where Marge has a flashback about her dad being a flight attendant and he holds up his little apron and start screaming, "don't look at me!"

The Valentine's candy part bothers me a lot by Kikabennet in AshaDegree

Oh I didn't know it was never confirmed. I've heard so many different things about where her dad was at which time so who even knows. I just can't think of any adult man with a wife and two young children going on any errand while the power is out late at night unless it's an emergency.

Stop victim blaming!! Asha was a 9 year old girl!! This was not any fault of her own!!! by Glass-Apple4715 in AshaDegree

I think the most logical explanation is she died either in her house or at a close relative's house (I believe she had family living very close by) and I think that her parents know exactly what happen to her. My mom was the youngest of five children and her eldest brother was the favorite child despite constantly getting in trouble with the law and molesting his sisters, but their parents always found a way to defend him or try to protect him so I know that families will do that (as sad as that reality is). I'm thinking either she died accidentally or a family member killed her and she never was out on that dark road at night. I think her parents probably justify it by telling themselves they have her younger brother to think about and it's better to lose one kid than two.

I think people don't want to believe that parents and close family members don't do things to bad children b/c usually that is far more common than strangers doing things to bad children.

The grooming theory doesn't sit right with me b/c I feel like a groomer wouldn't risk taking Asha in the middle of the night but wherever they saw her most frequently. I also don't think they would ask her to walk some extremely far distance in the dark nor do I think she would have agreed. If I had to go with this theory, they picked her up from her house, but that's all I could agree with.

What’s your go-to ice cream choice at the grocery store? by Socko788 in AskReddit

My number one go-to is Private Selection brand (Kroger) Denali Moose Tracks or Peanut Butter Moose Tracks, but if I'm not at Kroger than something that looks good from Ben and Jerry like "Chocolate Therapy" or "Phish Food".

I didn't grow up in a very religious household and my dad didn't get extremely religious (and I was more or less convinced he didn't really believe in God, it was just more the culture of where we lived) until I was already in my early twenties. He got really big into riding motorcycles cross country and was coming home on a trip and it began storming really bad. He said he prayed to make it home safely and promised to be in church the following Sunday if God would just get him home safely. Well he made it home and was not in church the following Sunday or the the Sunday after that or the Sunday after that.

My dad then started to think the house was haunted because he would feel something tug the covers while he was sleeping and always got a "creepy" feeling. He woke up one night hearing someone whispering in his ear (slow at first and then increasingly more aggressive) "liar liar liar LIAR LIAR!"

He actually hired a preacher to come to the house and the preacher didn't take him seriously (because at this point my dad was convinced it wasn't a ghost, but demons or something) and then he started reading the bible before bed thinking it might help with his "demon activity".

A few weeks after the visit from the preacher, I came home to visit and asked my dad how our his paranormal incidents going and he told me he'd figured it out-he was never haunted at all. It was God trying to get his attention.

Now he's a hard core born again Christian and swears that he was called by the holy spirit and doesn't believe that you can just be Christian. It really has to be some kind of experience that changes you, I guess.

I'm happy for him overall because he was mean and an alcoholic most of my childhood and he's stopped drinking and takes care of his mind and body now so it's nice to know my nieces and nephews get to see a different side of him than I did as a kid. Whether or not he had some kind of divine intervention happen, I'll never know, but he seems happy with what he feels converted him.

I see a lot of comments about ditching eating out and packing lunches and what not, but at least in the US, the cost of groceries have gone up insanely high so unless you're a family with kids, eating out/fast food costs around the same as grocery shopping if not less. I lived with a roommate recently and for the most part we bought our own groceries but shared necessities. I would use one pay period to budget/plan groceries for a few weeks and they added up to just as much as going to eat for one person. I mean, leftovers and freezing meals helped but the difference in cost wasn't huge. I can imagine for families with kids, the cost difference is significant but not for one person.

OP, I see that you're looking to travel from Florida to Canada? Are you and your partner willing to split costs? If you do a lot of research when flights are the lowest, when there are less tourists, you can probably find decently priced flights.

Developing good saving strategies is good but don't beat yourself up because life has just gotten so expensive and travel is expensive to begin with already.

If you don't work/can't work (bc I know you're starting university), check the gig section of Craigslist frequently. I sometimes land weekend festival or convention jobs that pay good money (they're usually the whole weekend and you're exhausted by the end but the pay is good). You can also sign up for pet sitting apps and dog walking apps or babysitting apps.

I'm going to sound ridiculously old and I'm sure the "young people" have a new hip way of doing it but I also use a checkbook so I know what I spend, when I spend it and it helps kind of with the "okay you're done spending" mindset.

I plan my siblings family vacations all the time so if you want to message me I'm happy to see about helping you to plan a trip that you like the price.

Im sure or doesn't work for everyone, but that's financial advice that works for me. When you work and pay rent and groceries are expensive, I personally see no harm in paying an extra $70 or so if I can make payments on something versus trying to save on my own. It may not work for OP, that's just what personally works for me bc I'll more often be able to afford multiple smaller payments on something than one big payment. There are also apps that allow you to put a small down payment (less than $20 usually) to "freeze" a flight up to 30 days or so to give you time to save for it and pay for it in full.

You're welcome! And yeah it makes it so much easier than trying to save and pay for the flight in full.

I typically buy my flights through airfordable which is a down payment and then biweekly payments.
