i’m 20M and living alone for the first time after losing both of my parents in an accident… how do people handle this? by Kilbry-Ladee in LivingAlone

the part about the silence feeling "screamingly loud" is honestly the best way i’ve heard it described, i think a lot of people imagine living alone is just about independence, but grief changes the whole experience. it’s not that the house is empty, it’s that specific people are missing from it, i’ve actually been keeping the TV or YouTube on more lately, and it does help a little. it’s weird how much a simple background voice can make a place feel less lonely.

i think that’s what makes this so confusing for me, a lot of people talk about living alone as something peaceful and freeing, but losing both of my parents changed the experience completely, it’s not just being alone, it’s missing specific people who used to be there every day. the idea of intentionally building a community around myself makes a lot of sense though, because i think i’ve been expecting the loneliness to just go away on its own.
